Exploring multiple drug use by integrating mobile health and qualitative mapping methods - An individual case study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple drug use involves particular pleasures and risks, and is disproportionately practiced by some minority and socially marginalized groups. The unique patterns, intentions, and social contexts of multiple drug use for these groups are poorly understood. METHODS: Our mixed method integrates geo-enabled smartphone survey data collection with a qualitative mapping interview method. This brief report presents data from one study participant to demonstrate this method's potential contributions to multiple drug use research for priority groups in different settings. RESULTS: 'Jas

Video game addiction in emerging adulthood: Cross-sectional evidence of pathology in video game addicts as compared to matched healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: The Internet Gaming Disorder Scale (IGDS) is a widely used measure of video game addiction, a pathology affecting a small percentage of all people who play video games. Emerging adult males are significantly more likely to be video game addicts. Few researchers have examined how people who qualify as video game addicts based on the IGDS compared to matched controls based on age, gender, race, and marital status. METHOD: The current study compared IGDS video game addicts to matched non-addicts in terms of their mental, physical, social-emotional health using self-report, survey met

A taxonomic framework of music-based intervention components to guide research: recommendations from the NIH U24 music research networks.

BACKGROUND: As research on music and health expands across disciplines, inconsistent terminology limits communication, replication, and mechanistic discovery. The absence of a shared lexicon obscures comparisons across studies and hinders identification of the specific music-based intervention (MBI) components and mechanistic pathways responsible for change in health-related outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To address this gap, a multidisciplinary working group representing four U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) U24 Music Research Networks developed and validated the Music-Based Intervention (MBI)

Characteristics and patient-reported outcomes associated with dropout in severely affected oncological patients: an exploratory study.

BackgroundPatient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are commonly-used surrogates for clinical outcomes in cancer research. When researching severe diseases such as cancer, it is difficult to avoid the problem of incomplete questionnaires from drop-outs or missing data from patients who pass away during the observation period. The aim of this exploratory study was to explore patient characteristics and the patient-reported outcomes associated with the time-to-dropout.MethodsIn an Oncological Social Care Project (OSCAR) study, the condition of the participants was assessed four times within 12 m

Effect and mechanism of acupuncture on Alzheimer's disease: A review.

With the development trend of an aging society, Alzheimer's disease (AD) has become an urgent problem in the field of medicine worldwide. Cognitive impairment in AD patients leads to a decline in the ability to perform daily living and abnormalities in behavior and personality, causing abnormal psychiatric symptoms, which seriously affect the daily life of patients. Currently, mainly drug therapy is used for AD patients in the clinic, but a large proportion of patients will experience drug efficacy not working, and even some drugs bring severe sleep disorders. Acupuncture, with its unique conc

Using Market Research to Characterize College Students and Identify Potential Targets for Influencing Health Behaviors.

Marketing campaigns, such as those developed by the tobacco industry, are based on market research, which defines segments of a population by assessing psychographic characteristics (i.e., attitudes, interests). This study uses a similar approach to define market segments of college smokers, to examine differences in their health behaviors (smoking, drinking, binge drinking, exercise, diet), and to determine the validity of these segments. A total of 2,265 undergraduate students aged 18-25 years completed a 108-item online survey in fall 2008 assessing demographic, psychographic (i.e., attitud

Momentary Mood and Affiliation Following Social Interactions in the Digital Age: Longitudinal Study Investigating Associations With Anxiety and Depression.

BACKGROUND: Two-fold increases in the prevalence of youth anxiety and depression over the last two decades have mirrored exponential growth in opportunities for adolescent online social interaction via social media, short messaging service (SMS), and internet text messaging apps on smartphones. However, studies to date of self-reported online social interaction time have produced conflicting results. Understanding the role of dispositional and developmental differences in individuals' responses to online versus offline social interactions may help elucidate whether and how online social intera

Equity is a prerequisite for a globally relevant HIV cure.

HIV cure-related research encompasses an expanding range of investigational strategies, but its global impact will depend on whether cure-related interventions are scientifically valid, acceptable and implementable in the populations most affected by the epidemic. Low- and middle-income countries carry a disproportionate HIV burden, yet cure-related research remains concentrated in high-income settings. This imbalance is not only an issue of access or social justice. Differences in viral subtypes, reservoir characteristics, timing of antiretroviral therapy initiation, co-infections and anatomi

Bibliometric and visual analysis of nocturnal enuresis from 1982 to 2022.

Nocturnal enuresis is a common disorder among children that seriously affects physical and mental health and has become a social problem. Bibliometric analysis is a valid way to examine existing research results, current research hotspots and research frontiers. Current studies on nocturnal enuresis are numerous and complex, but a bibliometric analysis of the existing research on nocturnal enuresis has yet to be published. To better identify the research trends and frontiers in nocturnal enuresis, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive review and analysis. We used bibliometric and visualiz

Theory of Mind in Patients with Epilepsy: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

The ability to understand our own thoughts, intentions, beliefs and emotions and those of others (Theory of Mind; ToM) is a high-order social cognitive skill that is vital for social interaction and which has been found to be impaired in patients with epilepsy. Studies examining ToM in patients with epilepsy, however, have yielded inconsistent findings. The main aim of this study is to determine whether the magnitude of ToM deficits varies as a function of the site of epilepsy focus and/or the type of ToM task used. Electronic databases searches included Psychinfo, Medline/PubMed and EMBASE. S

A Narrative Inquiry Into the Menopause Experiences of Women With Spinal Cord Injury.

Menopause presents distinct medical and social challenges for women with spinal cord injury (SCI), yet little is known about the lived experiences of this population, in part due to gender bias in SCI research and care. This narrative inquiry explores how disability, gender, and aging intersect to shape the menopausal experiences of women with SCI. This study involved two participants, Kim and Nadine, each of whom took part in four in-depth conversations exploring how they navigated, understood, and experienced menopause while living with SCI. Conversations were recorded, transcribed, and anal

Intolerance of uncertainty, causal uncertainty, causal importance, self-concept clarity and their relations to generalized anxiety disorder.

Although numerous studies have provided support for the notion that intolerance of uncertainty plays a key role in pathological worry (the hallmark feature of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)), other uncertainty-related constructs may also have relevance for the understanding of individuals who engage in pathological worry. Three constructs from the social cognition literature, causal uncertainty, causal importance, and self-concept clarity, were examined in the present study to assess the degree to which these explain unique variance in GAD, over and above intolerance of uncertainty. Football and symbols: a Bayesian analysis of symbolic consumption in sports club brands.

INTRODUCTION: Contemporary football operates as a cultural system in which club brands function as symbolic resources through which fans construct identity, lifestyle, and social belonging. However, existing research has largely relied on linear analytical approaches, limiting the understanding of how real social identity, ideal social identity, and lifestyle interact as an integrated symbolic system. AIMS: This study aims to analyze how football club brands generate a sense of belonging through symbolic consumption, considering the interrelationships among real social identity, ideal social

Correspondence to Antici et al. Salivary CRP predicts treatment response to virtual reality exposure therapy for social anxiety disorder.

The study by Antici et al. (2024) investigates the effects of virtual reality exposure therapy on social anxiety disorder (SAD), focusing on the relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in saliva and therapy outcomes. Findings indicate that this therapy not only reduces SAD symptoms and discomfort but also correlates with decreased systemic inflammation, as evidenced by lowered CRP levels. Remarkably, higher baseline CRP levels predicted a greater reduction in anxiety symptoms, suggesting a unique response pattern in SAD compared to other psychological disorders. This study highlig

Putative buffering roles of two-way social support and psychological resilience in the association between nurse-patient conflict and situational emotional response: a cross-sectional correlational study among Chinese nursing interns.

BACKGROUND: Nurse-patient conflict acts as a common stressor for nursing interns during clinical training. Existing research fails to empirically verify the synergistic buffering pathways of two-way social support and psychological resilience on interns' situational emotional responses in Chinese clinical settings. This study aimed to describe interns' emotional response status under nurse-patient conflicts and explore relevant associated factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional correlational design was adopted. A total of 423 eligible nursing interns with conflict experience were recruited from s

[Influence of the social network on consumption in drug addicts exhibiting psychiatric comorbidity].

This research used a qualitative methodology and was conducted on a sample of 22 participants with concomitant substance-related and mental health disorders. Today, dual diagnosis patients represent the standard rather than the exception. Our objectives were to consider the elements and processes of the social network to explain variations in consumption of alcohol and drugs. The social network refers to all bonds established by patients, mainly family, couple, friends and therapist relationships. The 22 patients have used a specialized addiction treatment in Montreal (Canada). A focused quali
