A comparison of the rostrocaudal open mouth and rostro 10 degrees ventro-caudodorsal oblique radiographic views for imaging fluid in the feline tympanic bulla.

Fluid within the tympanic bulla is an indication of middle ear disease. Radiography has a relatively low accuracy for the detection of soft tissue opacification in the tympanic bulla, and the most useful radiographic projection, the rostrocaudal open mouth (RCd (open mouth)), is technically difficult to perform in dogs and cats. An alternative projection for the feline tympanic bulla, the rostro 10 degrees ventro-caudodorsal oblique (R10 degrees V-CdDO), was compared to the RCd (open mouth) in 41 feline cadaver heads with the tympanic bullae randomly filled with KY jelly. Joseph Jones: infection with flesh eating bacteria.

A Confederate Army surgeon, Joseph Jones, is generally credited to have provided the first modern description of necrotizing fasciitis, then known as hospital gangrene. This is a soft tissue infection characterized by a rapid and progressive course. In the 1990s, this entity has been popularized by the media as representing infection with "flesh eating bacteria." Certain patients are at particular risk to develop necrotizing soft tissue infections. Those with impaired immunity, diabetes mellitus, and intravenous drug abuse are particularly vulnerable, but these infections can also occur in pre

Ileal J pouch: radiologic evaluation in patients with and without postoperative infectious complications.

The authors studied the ileograms and computed tomographic (CT) examinations of 18 patients who had undergone surgical construction of an ileal J pouch and ileoanal anastomosis; 10 had developed postoperative infectious complications and eight had not. The initial ileograms obtained 4 weeks postoperatively proved to be unhelpful in predicting future infectious complications, showing abnormalities in only two of 10 patients. Ileography and CT performed at the time of the complications showed abnormalities in eight of nine and nine of 10 patients, respectively. Ileographic abnormalities in patie

Soft-Tissue Closure through Acute Deformation and Gradual Correction Using Taylor Spatial Frame in a Gustilo-Anderson Type IIIB Open Tibial Pilon Fracture: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Purpose: Gustilo-Anderson Type IIIB open tibial fractures resulting from high-energy trauma present significant challenges for both skeletal stabilization and soft-tissue reconstruction. We present a case of successful management using acute deformation and gradual correction with the Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF), without the need for free tissue transfer, and discuss the clinical value of this approach in the context of contemporary literature. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old male with a gunshot-related distal tibial Type IIIB open fracture presented with a failed skin graft and a per

Unsegmented marine annelids as biomechanical models for soft robotics.

This work investigates marine worms as a source of bioinspiration for soft robotics, focusing on Phascolosoma stephensoni (Annelida), an unsegmented sipunculan species with a fully eversible introvert capable of remarkable elongations. High-resolution micro-computed tomography was used to resolve the internal musculoskeletal architecture across functional configurations. Morphometric analyses of live specimens revealed strong differentiation between body regions: trunk length remains nearly constant during motion (7.26 ± 3.40 mm retracted vs. 7.70 ± 3.47 mm extended), whereas total body length

Diagnosing necrotizing fasciitis: is there a difference between type I and type II with respect to computer tomography scan features?

PURPOSE: Necrotising fasciitis (NF) requires rapid diagnosis to prevent morbidity and mortality. Yet clinicians rely heavily on imaging to help guide diagnosis, but type II NF is caused by non-gas producing organisms. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess computer topography (CT) imaging findings of type I compared to type II NF. METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted by reviewing medical records with NF from 1/1/2020 to 12/31/2024 at a single medical centre. The presence of air on CT images was evaluated by reviewing radiology reports and manual review of imaging. Comparisons

Fast high-resolution dental MRI using a disposable wireless intraoral coil: From concept to reality.

Fast high-resolution dental MRI remains challenging due to the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in small-volume tissues and the reliance on unwieldy, clinically impractical signal detection devices. In this study, we present a fast high-resolution dental MRI framework that achieved superior soft tissue visualization in a resolution of 0.30 × 0.30 × 1.5 mm3 within 68 s. Central to this framework was a novel wireless braced intraoral coil (WBIC), which demonstrated up to 5.83-fold improvements in SNR in combination with a 48-channel head coil compared with the only head coil. In the in vivo studi

Treatment for progressive hemifacial atrophy: paradigm shift from 2D photograph to 3D stereophotogrammetry.

BACKGROUND: Progressive hemifacial atrophy is a rare craniofacial disease that commonly involves withered skin, soft tissue, cartilage, or bone on one side of the face. The author proposed a therapeutic algorithm tailored to PHA's severity, which revealed a paradigm shift from subjective evaluation on 2D photographs to more objective assessment using 3D stereophotogrammetry. METHODS: This retrospective observational study comprised all patients diagnosed with PHA between February 2000 and August 2025. Patients were categorized into three tiers according to deficits in soft tissue, facial skel

Preoperative Endoscopic Ultrasound Strain Elastography Has Limited Value for Predicting Intraoperative Pancreatic Texture: A Single-Operator Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Soft pancreatic texture is a key risk factor for postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF). However, preoperative quantification remains difficult. Intraoperative palpation is the current standard for assessing pancreatic hardness; however, this technique is not feasible in robot-assisted surgery. We prospectively evaluated whether endoscopic ultrasound strain elastography (EUS-SE) could predict pancreatic hardness. METHODS: Nine consecutive patients scheduled for pancreatectomies underwent preoperative EUS-SE. The strain ratio (SR) values from the nontumorous parenchyma were c

Three-dimensional prediction of the nose for facial reconstruction: A preliminary study on North Indian adults.

Forensic facial reconstruction is the last recourse to establish the identity of an unknown skull. The facial soft-tissue thickness (FSTT) is required to reconstruct various facial features on a skull. Unlike other facial features, the nose is made of cartilaginous tissue except for a small nasal bone. A large cavity (pyriform aperture) exists on the skull in place of the nose, which makes it a challenging job for reconstruction. The nose is a vital feature for the recognition of a face. Any change in the shape or size of the nose can alter the original aesthetic of the face. The present study

Awake 160-Slice Computed Tomography for Upper Airway Evaluation in 17 Dogs.

This study investigated using a 160-slice multidetector computed tomography (CT) scanner for conscious image acquisition in dogs with upper airway disease, and describes findings in dogs that had previously undergone soft palate surgery. Seventeen client-owned dogs with upper airway disease were retrospectively reviewed, and classified into three groups: group I, "untreated brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) patients"; group II, "previously treated BOAS patients"; and group III, "patients with respiratory disease other than BOAS". Data included signalment, clinical history, dire

Soft tissues influence nasal airflow in diapsids: Implications for dinosaurs.

The nasal passage performs multiple functions in amniotes, including olfaction and thermoregulation. These functions would have been present in extinct animals as well. However, fossils preserve only low-resolution versions of the nasal passage due to loss of soft-tissue structures after death. To test the effects of these lower resolution models on interpretations of nasal physiology, we performed a broadly comparative analysis of the nasal passages in extant diapsid representatives, e.g., alligator, turkey, ostrich, iguana, and a monitor lizard. Using computational fluid dynamics, we simulat

Myxofibrosarcoma of the abdominal wall : A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is a subtype of soft tissue sarcoma characterized by diffuse infiltration patterns. Myxofibrosarcoma arises often in extremities. Its occurrence in the abdominal wall is extremely rare. Herein, we present here a case of high-grade MFS of the abdominal wall discovered in a 58-year-old woman complaining of an abdominal mass. PRESENTATION OF CASE: This report illustrates the case of a female who presented a mass in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a well-circumcised, heterogeneous soft tissue mass. We p

Imaging of Joint and Soft Tissue Involvement in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To highlight the potential uses and applications of imaging in the assessment of the most common and relevant musculoskeletal (MSK) manifestations in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). RECENT FINDINGS: Ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are accurate and sensitive in the assessment of inflammation and structural damage at the joint and soft tissue structures in patients with SLE. The US is particularly helpful for the detection of joint and/or tendon inflammation in patients with arthralgia but without clinical synovitis, and for the early identification o

Postmortem Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Gunshot Wounds to the Neck.

Postmortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is rarely used for the radiologic assessment of gunshot injuries, although it has clear advantages over postmortem computed tomography (CT) with regard to the imaging of soft tissue injuries. Another benefit in using MRI is that lodged projectiles composed of nonferromagnetic material such as lead present only marginal metal artifacts compared with severe artifacts on CT. This case report presents CT and MRI findings in a case with two gunshot wounds to the neck: a perforating wound and a nonperforating wound with a lead bullet lodged in the cervical

Three-dimensional visualization of blood supply of the upper lip using micro-CT and implications for plastic surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The anatomy of the arterial branches in the upper lip and their relationships to soft tissue are not well described in the literature. The purpose of this study was to explore a method for visualizing the microvessels and soft tissue three-dimensionally to gain better understanding of the upper lip blood supply. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen stillborn fetuses were injected with lead oxide-gelatin and stained with iodine. Thirty-four half upper lip specimens were obtained and scanned by micro-computed tomography. The images were then examined and Inveon analysis software was u
