The geographic distribution of sporotrichosis in the United States is largely unknown. In a large commercial health insurance database, sporotrichosis was rare but most frequently occurred in southern and south-central states. Knowledge about where sporotrichosis is most likely to occur is essential for increasing clinician awareness of this rare fungal disease.

PURPOSE: To report a patient with bulbar conjunctival sporotrichosis presenting as a salmon-pink tumor.
METHODS: This was an interventional case report. A 62-year-old woman presented with conjunctival injection in her left eye. Despite administration of topical dexamethasone sodium, ofloxacin, and levocabastine hydrochloride, her symptoms failed to improve and she was referred to us.
RESULTS: Four weeks after referral to us, the patient gradually developed conjunctival injection in both eyes and a salmon-pink tumor in the bulbar conjunctiva of the left eye. Excision biopsy was performed and

Sporotrichosis is a generally cutaneous, granulomatous, chronic and benign infection. Less frequently the disease may affect the joints. Articular involvement is usually characterized by monoarthritis in the absence of systemic symptoms, generally preceded by skin lesions, and frequently affects immunosuppressed individuals. We describe here the case of a healthy patient presenting knee arthritis without skin lesions, diagnosed as sporotrichosis, and treated with oral itraconazole. Serology used in this case was an invaluable tool for the diagnosis of sporotrichosis arthritis lacking skin lesi

Articular sporotrichosis, a chronic granulomatous fungal infection, is a rare entity but when present may lead to significant joint destruction. Severe knee arthrosis due to sporotrichal arthritis has traditionally been treated with arthrodesis. Total knee arthroplasty in the presence of sporotrichal arthritis has been treated with long-term suppressive antifungal agents or 1-stage exchange total knee arthroplasty. We present a case in which primary total knee arthroplasty in the presence of sporotrichal arthritis resulted in good functional outcome at 2.5 years of follow-up.

This work was based on the analysis of digital images of histochemical profile from subcutaneous lesions in sporotrichosis (ST) and chromoblastomycosis (CM) patients. An additional aim was the detection of carbohydrate expression using lectin histochemical analysis of the different carbohydrates in the fungal cell wall from four different species (Sporothrix schenckii, Fonsecaea pedrosoi, Phialophora verrucosa, and Cladophialophora carrionii) associated with diseases mentioned earlier. Slides from tissue biopsies from ST and CM positive patients (n=10, each) were stained according to routine t

In the spring of 1988, the largest documented US outbreak of cutaneous sporotrichosis to date occurred, with 84 cases among persons from 15 states who were exposed to Wisconsin-grown sphagnum moss used in packing evergreen tree seedlings. In New York State, 13 cases occurred among 109 forestry workers. All 13 cases occurred among 76 workers who had handled evergreen seedlings and moss (attack rate = 17%). For those exposed to evergreens and moss, the risk of infection increased as worktime exposure to moss increased (attack rates: less than 10 hours, 8%; 10-19 hours, 12%; greater than 19 hours

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis of public health relevance due to the increased zoonotic transmission associated with felines. Ebselen (EB), a poorly water-soluble organic selenium compound, reacts with thiol groups of redox proteins, increases oxidative stress, and causes fungal death. Microneedles (MN) create microchannels in the skin, disrupting the stratum corneum and allowing the release and diffusion of the drug into deeper layers, potentially reaching blood capillaries. Sporotrichosis is typically treated with intravenous or oral therapies. Thus, this study developed polymeric

BACKGROUND: One of the most neglected, yet rapidly developing, areas of concern in global health is the changing epidemiology of fungal infections.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this narrative review was to draw attention to the pressing need for both a better understanding of the ecological, environmental, and host-related mechanisms underlying these emerging phenomena as well as a greater awareness of the growing clinical and public health significance of fungal diseases. It also highlights the significance of equitable access to fungal diagnostics and antifungal treatments, as well as coordin

Sporotrichosis is a globally distributed mycosis caused by thermally dimorphic fungi of the Sporothrix schenckii species complex. In Brazil, sporotrichosis is considered endemic and is usually acquired through zoonotic transmission from infected cats. The clinical manifestations may be cutaneous, lymphocutaneous, or systemic, the latter being more commonly observed in immunosuppressed patients. The limited effectiveness of antifungal treatments against this mycosis, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, has led to the search for more effective and safer therapies. Based on several stu

Considering the increased incidence of sporotrichosis and other fungal infections in rural and urban areas, and the limitations and adverse effects of oral itraconazole therapy, we studied nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) as topical delivery systems to increase itraconazole localization in skin lesions and associate efficacy with reduced systemic exposure. Unloaded and itraconazole-loaded NLC showed nanometric size (~216-340 nm), negative zeta potential (~ -17 mV), and high entrapment efficiency (~97%). NLC treatment decreased transepidermal water loss, an index of cutaneous barrier functio

INTRODUCTION: Sporotrichosis is an infectious fungal zoonosis associated with traumatic implantation in the skin of dimorphic fungi of the Sporothrix schenckii complex. The objective of this study was to diagnose sporotrichosis in patients in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, and to establish correlations between positive laboratory results and dermatological and topographical aspects of the lesions and personal traits of the patients, such as sex, age and profession.
METHODOLOGY: We collected samples from 22 patients with suspect lesions, which were sent to the laboratory for direct microsc

PURPOSE: To review and summarize the symptomatology, microbiology, special clinical entities, management, complications, and outcomes of pediatric acute dacryocystitis.
METHODS: The author performed a PubMed search of all articles published in English on acute dacryocystitis. Pediatric subpopulations of these articles were reviewed along with the scant literature of direct references to neonatal and pediatric acute dacryocystitis. Data reviewed included demographics, presentations, microbiological work up, management, complications, and outcomes.
RESULTS: Acute dacryocystitis is not very com

Sporotrichosis is an uncommon to rare cutaneous and subcutaneous mycosis of animals and humans caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii. Twenty-three mammalian cases of sporotrichosis examined between 1987 and 2007 at the University of California, Davis - Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, were retrospectively evaluated with regard to the historical, clinical, diagnostic and treatment findings. Cats were the most common species affected (n = 14). In addition, sporotrichosis was diagnosed in four dogs, four horses and a donkey. Six of 23 cases were diagnosed with the localized cut

Trauma can trigger the onset of some lesions of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). In this study, we present the case of a 65-year-old man who developed persistent, ulcerative, nodular lymphangiitis at the site of elbow abrasions from a fall during a trip to northeastern Brazil. Skin and lymph node biopsy showed tuberculoid granulomatous inflammation and Grocott-methamine silver-positive yeast forms consistent with Sporothrix and Staphylococcus lugdunensis was identified from tissue culture. Antibacterial and antifungal treatment produced short-term healing. Crusted papules recurred at the sites of

Two strains of mice genetically selected for extreme phenotypes of immunological tolerance to ovalbumin, susceptible (TS) and resistant (TR), were experimentally infected with Sporothrix schenckii. The objective was to observe whether the genetic modifications produced by the selection might be associated with interstrain differences in adaptive immune and innate responses to infection. Therefore, we evaluated the LD(50), CFU, phagocytic index, fungicidal activity, pro-inflammatory cytokines, specific antibody titres, and the delayed-type hypersensitivity reactivity. TR mice were tenfold more

The development of novel metal-based antifungals requires rigorous characterization of their toxicological mechanisms to ensure patient safety. This study investigated the toxicogenetic profile and cellular interactions of lawsone silver salt (LSS), a compound with established activity against Sporothrix spp. and emerging multidrug-resistant pathogens. Antifungal efficacy was confirmed against planktonic Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida albicans, and C. auris (MIC 1.45-23.2 µM), with significant anti-biofilm activity against C. albicans (185.9 µM) and A. fumigatus (92.9 µM). BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by Sporothrix spp., typically acquired through traumatic inoculation of fungal spores from soil, plants and infected cat scratches. The disease manifests in various clinical forms, including lymphocutaneous, ocular, bone, and disseminated infections. Standard treatment relies on prolonged administration of antifungals such as itraconazole, terbinafine, and potassium iodide, often requiring months for complete resolution. Moreover, treatment challenges include slow clinical response, recurrence, and potential drug toxicity. Hyperbaric

Feline sporotrichosis has been reported in Malaysia since the 1990's. Since then, studies have revealed that clinical clade D, Sporothrix schenckii sensu stricto, of a single clonal strain is the most common cause of this disease in Malaysia. The prevalence of a single clonal strain from a clinical clade was never before reported in Asia in a specific geographical niche. This raises the possibility of a process of purifying selection and subsequent clonal proliferation. While agricultural practices may serve as the selective pressure, direct causality has yet to be established. Studies into th
