Airborne irritant contact dermatitis from metal dust adhering to semisynthetic working suits.

2 workers at an aircraft factory were employed in a plasma sparying unit. Soon after they were equipped with new semisynthetic working suits, they started to complain of pruritic eruptions after heavy exposure to metal dust. They noted that the dust was not as easily blown off the clothes by pressurized air as previously. Clinical findings consisted of discrete macular and papular lesions, partly follicular, on the ventral and medial thighs. Atopy score, IgE level and a standard series of prick tests ruled out atopic disposition. Patch tests revealed no reactions. A diagnosis of occupational a

The acute sensory neuronopathy syndrome: a distinct clinical entity.

Four to twelve days following initial antibiotic treatment for a febrile illness, three adults suddenly experienced numbness and pain over the face and entire body. Each had received a penicillin or a semisynthetic derivative, and two patients also received other antibiotics. Signs appeared rapidly and included profound sensory ataxia, areflexia, and widespread sensory loss, primarily of large fiber modalities (proprioceptive sensibility). Slowed or absent sensory conduction was found. There was no weakness, and electrical study of muscle and motor nerve conduction was normal in all. The cereb

Intersubject variability in a comprehensive numerical assessment of operator electromagnetic exposure to TMS.

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is increasingly used in clinical and research settings, often requiring the operator to remain in close proximity to the stimulation coil. While regulatory guidelines exist for patient safety, the workplace exposure assessment, particularly its dependence on operator anatomy, remains limited. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the electric field (E-field) induced in TMS operators under realistic working conditions, with a focus on how inter-subject anatomical variability affects compliance with international safety guidelines. Electrical impedance tomography in neonatal respiratory diseases: a clinical review of applications and evidence.

Neonatal respiratory diseases remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care settings, with management complicated by the limitations of current monitoring tools. Chest radiography provides only static snapshots and cannot capture the dynamic evolution of lung aeration, while lung ultrasound, though portable, remains operator-dependent and incapable of quantifying regional ventilation. Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) has emerged as a noninvasive, radiation free imaging modality that addresses these gaps by enabling real time, continuous visualization of regional lung

Bandgap transition and second-harmonic generation in ABC and ACB stacked γ-trilayers of Janus-Ga2SeTe.

Stacking engineering has been investigated in even-layer and bulk Janus-Ga2SeTe, but whether odd-layer systems host unconventional physics remains unclear. In this work, we study the influence of stacking order on the physical properties of γ-phase trilayers of Janus-Ga2SeTe using first-principles calculations. Despite identical space groups and similar bandgaps (∼1 eV), the γ[ABC] and γ[ACB] trilayers show indirect and direct bandgaps, respectively. Stacking-modulated built-in electric fields of 0.471 V nm-1 (ABC) and 0.434 V nm-1 (ACB) modulate orbital hybridization, charge delocalization, a

Electrochemical Gating of d-Band Engineering in Hierarchically Bridged Dual-Site Nanozymes for Synergistic Cascade Catalysis and Wearable Biosensing.

Cascade nanozymes for biosensing are fundamentally hampered by diffusion limitations and passive catalytic sites. Herein, we report a strategy of electrochemical gating of d-band engineering within a hierarchically bridged dual-site nanozyme (CuNCs@FeMOP) to achieve dynamic control over cascading catalysis. This architecture spatially confines the ascorbic acid oxidase-mimicking copper nanocluster (CuNC) core and the peroxidase-mimicking iron-based microporous organic polymer (FeMOP) shell, eliminating intermediate diffusion losses. More critically, synergistic electronic coupling via a histid

Bionic Ion Pumps: Triazine-Based Covalent Organic Framework Nanofluidics for Photo-Induced Ion Transport and Nanofluidic Energy Conversion.

Nanofluidic ion transport, traditionally governed by charge-induced electrical double layers (EDLs), has enabled diverse applications in energy conversion, sensing, and ion sieving. However, such transport is intrinsically passive as it relies on static interface charges. Inspired by biological ion channels, which utilize dynamic interface charges to drive active ion pumping in chloroplast thylakoid membranes during photosynthesis, we demonstrate a photo-induced, active bionic ion transport system. This is achieved using an ultrathin nanofluidic membrane constructed from triazine-based covalen

Optoelectronic Nanofluidic Neural Networks for Ionic Computing.

Emerging neuromorphic computing technologies aim to replicate the brain's cognitive processes and offer promising capabilities for advanced computation and complex tasks. Building artificial neural networks (ANNs) with robust connections and dynamic plasticity is essential for their implementation. Nevertheless, most existing ANNs rely on solid-state semiconductors, where electrons or holes serve as information carriers. Here, we present a novel ion-based nanofluidic memristor operating in aqueous solutions, which can be integrated to create densely connected ionic neural networks (INNs). The

Colloidal stability of nanocellulose hydrogels in physiological and cell culture environments.

Nanocellulose is a promising alternative to animal-derived matrices for tissue engineering, yet its colloidal stability and rheological performance are heavily influenced by the ions and proteins in physiological environments. Here, we systematically investigated the colloidal stability and interfacial behavior of native (nCNF) and anionic (aCNF) cellulose nanofibrils in physiologically relevant media using rheology, zeta potential, static multiple light scattering (SMLS), and multi-parameter surface plasmon resonance (MP-SPR). Increasing ionic strength compressed the electrical double layer,

Electrical Impedance Myography Quantifies Holding and Pushing During Isometric Muscle Contractions.

INTRODUCTION: To address muscle performance, a local Electrical Impedance Myography (EIM) framework is introduced that targets the quadriceps femoris muscle group, which is sensitive to age-related muscle loss. It can be used for force estimation during the seated leg extension exercise under isometric conditions, providing a novel tool for geriatric assessment and therapy tracking. METHODS: In this pilot study involving ten healthy male adults, a quasi-static comparison of the measured torque with either EIM signals, parameters calculated from the Debye- or Cole model, and characteristic fre

Advances in facial nerve management in the head and neck cancer patient.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize best practices in facial nerve management for patients with head and neck cancer. In addition, we provide a review of recent literature on novel innovations and techniques in facial reanimation surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Although recommended when tumor ablation surgery requires facial nerve sacrifice, facial reanimation procedures are not always performed. Concurrent dynamic facial reanimation with masseteric nerve transfers and cable graft repair can preserve native facial muscle function. Static suspension can provide facial suppo

Regional Volume Characteristics of the Preterm Infant Receiving First Intention Continuous Positive Airway Pressure.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether applying nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) using systematic changes in continuous distending pressure (CDP) results in a quasi-static pressure-volume relationship in very preterm infants receiving first intention CPAP in the first 12-18 hours of life. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty infants at <32 weeks' gestation with mild respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) managed exclusively with nasal CPAP had CDP increased from 5 to 8 to 10 cmH2O, and then decreased to 8 cmH2O and returned to baseline CDP. Each CDP was maintained for 20 min. At each CDP, relative impe

Tooth reorientation affects tooth function during prey processing and tooth ontogeny in the lesser electric ray, Narcine brasiliensis.

The dental anatomy of elasmobranch fishes (sharks, rays and relatives) creates a functional system that is more dynamic than that of mammalian dentition. Continuous dental replacement (where new teeth are moved rostrally to replace older ones) and indirect fibrous attachment of the dentition to the jaw allow teeth to reorient relative to the jaw over both long- and short-term scales, respectively. In this study, we examine the processing behavior and dental anatomy of the lesser electric ray Narcine brasiliensis (Olfers, 1831) to illustrate that the freedom of movement of elasmobranch dentitio

The relationship between postural stability and virtual environment adaptation.

Currently little is known about how adaptive responses to virtual environments are different between individuals who experience sickness related symptoms and those who do not. It is believed that sensory interactions between visually perceived self-motion and static inertial cues from vestibular and/or proprioceptive sensory systems contribute to the development of adaptation symptoms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between adaptation symptoms and postural stability in a virtual environment (VE) driving simulator. In addition, the role of sensory interaction was assesse
