We report the case of a 67-year-old woman with non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) due to hyponatremia. She had a history of psychogenic polydipsia but not epilepsy. OBJECTIVE: Convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) is very rarely observed after ischaemic stroke. Sodium valproate (SV) is one of the agents used in the treatment of CSE, but its role still controversial, and its degree of efficacy in treating CSE that develops following stroke is unclear.

Malignant hypertension due to autonomic dysfunction is a known complication of Guillain-Barré syndrome. We describe a child who presented with status epilepticus secondary to hypertensive encephalopathy who, in recovery, was found to be areflexic. Nerve conduction studies confirmed the clinical diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome. We investigated a possible correlation between behavior during status epilepticus (SE) and underlying brain damage. Adult rats were electrically stimulated in the left amygdala to induce SE, which was stopped 2 hours later. We described an 18 old homosexual man who after 5 days developed a neurologic picture associated with Human Immunodeficiency Viruses (HIV) seroconversion. The patient had developed a dissociative psychiatric disorder 6 months before, and after resolution of the acute neurologic disease a mild neuro-psychiatric disorder remained. A case of status epilepticus which was refractory to conventional anticonvulsants is described. The total dosage of thiopentone necessary to control the convulsions is greater than that previously reported. The use of regular plasma estimation of thiopentone levels, and of cortical monitoring with the Cerebral Function Monitor (Ormed Engineering) is described, and is recommended where anticonvulsants are used for prolonged control of status epilepticus and in dosages greater than is common practice.
