Post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociation, and neuropsychological performance in Latina victims of childhood sexual abuse.

This study compared the memory, attention/concentration, and executive functioning of 12 women with histories of child sexual abuse with a control group of 12 women without childhood abuse. Participants completed a neuropsychological test battery and various instruments assessing post-traumatic stress disorder and dissociation. The child sexual abuse group had lower performance than the control group on long- and short-term visual and verbal memory and presented more limited performance on executive functioning tasks. Functioning in these areas showed a negative correlation with post-traumatic

Impact of traumatic events on posttraumatic stress disorder among Danish survivors of sexual abuse in childhood.

Childhood sexual abuse can be extremely traumatic and lead to lifelong symptomatology. The present study examined the impact of several demographic, abuse, and psychosocial variables on posttraumatic stress disorder severity among a consecutive sample of treatment-seeking, adult child sexual abuse survivors (N = 480). The child sexual abuse sample was characterized by severe trauma exposure, insecure attachment, and significant traumatization, with an estimated 77% suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder, more than twice the level of the comparison group. Regression analyses revealed risk

Specific pain complaints in Iraq and Afghanistan veterans screening positive for post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and pain are highly comorbid. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the association of PTSD with specific pain complaints in veterans of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF). METHOD: A total of 381 primarily male (88.5%) veterans with a mean age of 30 years completed a battery of self-report questionnaires. A positive PTSD screen was defined as a score of ≥40 on the Davidson Trauma Scale. Logistic regression was used to examine the association of positive PTSD screen with specific pain complaints. RESULTS: There were

Effects of tetrahydropalmatine on post-traumatic stress disorder-induced changes in rat brain gene expression.

The aim of this research proposal was to investigate the effects of tetrahydropalmatine (THP) on gene expression in a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) rodent model. Eighty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to the nonstressed groups or the 3-day restraint shock PTSD rodent model groups. There were four groups within the nonstressed rats (control, THP, midazolam, and midazolam with THP) and four groups within the stressed rats (control, THP, midazolam, and midazolam with THP). After injection the subjects were euthanized and the amygdala and hippocampus were sent for reverse t

Evidence of diffuse damage in frontal and occipital cortex in the brain of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder.

A number of MRI studies have shown focal or diffuse cortical gray matter (GM) abnormalities in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the results of these studies are unclear regarding the cortical regions involved in this condition, perhaps due to the heterogeneity of the PTSD population included or to the differences in the methodology used for the quantification of the brain structures. In this study, we assessed differences in cortical GM volumes between a selected group of 25 drug-naive PTSD patients with history of adulthood trauma and 25 matched non-traumatized co

A diagnostic dilemma between psychosis and post-traumatic stress disorder: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder is defined as a mental disorder that arises from the experience of traumatic life events. Research has shown a high incidence of co-morbidity between post-traumatic stress disorder and psychosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 32-year-old black African woman with a history of both post-traumatic stress disorder and psychosis. Two years ago she presented to mental health services with auditory and visual hallucinations, persecutory delusions, suicidal ideation, recurring nightmares, hyper-arousal, and initial and middle insomnia. She was

Traumatic events, posttraumatic stress disorder, attachment style, and working alliance in a sample of people with psychosis.

There is a high incidence of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in people with a diagnosis of psychosis. Sequelae of trauma may affect the ability to engage in both attachment and therapeutic relationships. This study investigated associations between trauma histories, PTSD, attachment styles, and working alliance in a sample of 110 individuals with psychosis and substance misuse. Anxious attachment was associated with number of interpersonal traumas and PTSD reported, but there were no associations between trauma and alliance. There were discrepancies in number of traumatic event

Effects of EMDR psychotherapy on 99mTc-HMPAO distribution in occupation-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a derangement of mood control with involuntary, emotionally fraught recollections that may follow deep psychological trauma in susceptible individuals. This condition is treated with pharmacological and/or cognitive therapies as well as psychotherapy with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). However, only a very limited number of studies have been published dealing with work-related PTSD, and investigations on the effect of treatment on cerebral blood flow represent an even smaller number. AIM: To investigate the short-term

Aripiprazole in the management of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in returning Global War on Terrorism veterans.

The present study illustrates the potential use of aripiprazole as part of the management of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in returning Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) veterans. Five consecutive cases of GWOT combat-related PTSD, managed in part with the atypical antipsychotic medication aripiprazole, are presented and discussed. In four of the five cases reported, the medication was well-tolerated and was effective in the management of sleep disturbances, such as nightmares and agitated behaviours during sleep, and was also helpful in the management of hyper-arousal. In one case, the v

Parahippocampal activation evoked by masked traumatic images in posttraumatic stress disorder: a functional MRI study.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been widely studied, but its neural mechanism is still unclear. The purpose of this study is to identify dysfunctional areas in PTSD throughout the whole brain to help to elucidate the neural mechanisms of PTSD. Sixteen patients with PTSD and sixteen healthy controls participated in this study. Traumatic images under perceptual threshold including scenes of earthquakes, traffic accidents, ambulances, emergency rooms, and crimes were presented to the participants, and brain activation was measured using functional MRI. Functional brain images of both gro

A preliminary trial of nalmefene for the treatment of emotional numbing in combat veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Eighteen chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD+) combat veterans were administered nalmefene, a non-FDA approved oral opiate antagonist, based on the hypothesis that emotional numbing is an opiate-mediated phenomenon. Eight veterans showed a favorable response with a marked decrease of emotional numbing and other symptoms of PTSD, including startle response, nightmares, flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, rage and vulnerability. Veterans who responded favorably to the drug demonstrated a waxing and a waning of positive and negative PTSD symptoms with a general improvement in all these sympt

Characteristic psychiatric symptomatology of post-traumatic stress disorder in veterans: a three year follow-up.

This study assessed the clinical picture of two groups of Israeli veterans of the Lebanon war: (a) veterans who sustained a combat stress reaction (CSR) (N = 213), and (b) matched controls not so diagnosed (N = 116). Subjects were screened at three points--one, two, and three years after their participation in the war. The results indicated that Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was correlated with a wider range of general psychiatric symptomatology, as measured by the SCL-90. Moreover, among PTSD veterans, those who suffered from an antecedent CSR reported wider and more severe symptomato

Potentially traumatic childbirth experience, childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, and the parent-infant relationship in non-birthing parents.

BACKGROUND: Non-birthing parents are typically present for the birth of their infants. Evidence suggests that some non-birthing parents may experience witnessing childbirth as traumatic, with some going on to develop childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD). This study aimed to explore the associations between non-birthing parents' experiences of childbirth, symptoms of CB-PTSD, and the parent-infant relationship. The COVID-19 pandemic context is considered throughout the study, although it must be noted that most data were not collected during UK lockdown restrictions. MET

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for post-traumatic growth (PTG) in people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: In evaluating the effectiveness of different therapeutic methods aimed at fostering post-traumatic growth (PTG) in individuals who have experienced trauma, a key inquiry arises: Can cognitive-behavioral therapies enhance PTG in those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder? METHODS: To address this question, comprehensive searches were conducted across the PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from the inception of these databases through 1 January, 2025. To be included, studies had to consist of clinical trials, randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental, or ex

Neuroinflammation does not exacerbate post-traumatic stress-disorder (PTSD)-like brain measures or behaviour after a traumatic event in male rats.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is strongly linked to neuroinflammation, with immune activation in brain regions such as the amygdala and hippocampus potentially contributing to its long-term persistence. Yet, whether neuroinflammation experienced at the time of trauma can cause, or increase the likelihood of PTSD-like symptoms and central nervous system changes developing is currently untested. If concomitant neuroinflammation exacerbates PTSD risk, treating neuroinflammation immediately after trauma could be a strategy to prevent PTSD development. This study investigated whether an imm

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) and suicide risk: A multigroup mediation analysis exploring the role of post-traumatic symptomatology on hopelessness.

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) is a clinical condition that features not only PTSD symptoms, but also disturbances in self-organization. Patients with cPTSD have a higher incidence of psychiatric comorbidities, including suicidality. A key construct tightly related to suicidality is hopelessness, described as a feeling of despair, with a state of mind giving low or negative expectancies regarding one's future. Since there is a paucity of studies investigating the link between cPTSD and hopelessness as a risk factor for suicidality, the aim of this study was to examine the role

Measurement invariance of six language versions of the post-traumatic stress disorder checklist for DSM-5 in civilians after traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is frequently associated with neuropsychiatric impairments such as symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can be screened using self-report instruments such as the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). The current study aims to inspect the factorial validity and cross-linguistic equivalence of the PCL-5 in individuals after TBI with differential severity. Data for six language groups (n ≥ 200; Dutch, English, Finnish, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish) were extracted from the CENTER-TBI study database. Factorial validity of PTSD wa

The Relationship Between Cognitive Functioning and Symptoms of Depression, Anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Adults with a Traumatic Brain Injury: a Meta-Analysis.

A thorough understanding of the relationship between cognitive test performance and symptoms of depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is important given the high prevalence of these emotional symptoms following injury. It is also important to understand whether these relationships are affected by TBI severity, and the validity of test performance and symptom report. This meta-analysis was conducted to investigate whether these symptoms are associated with cognitive test performance alterations in adults with a TBI. This meta-a

Relationship satisfaction among spouse caregivers of service members and veterans with comorbid mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.

This study examined relationship satisfaction and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among spouse caregivers assisting service members and veterans (SMV) with comorbid uncomplicated mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Spouse caregivers (N = 205) completed the Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI), 12 HRQOL measures, and the Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory 4th Edition (MPAI-4). T-scores were classified as "clinically elevated" using a cutoff of ≥60T. The sample was also classified into "Satisfied" (≥13.5, n = 113, 55.0%) or "Dissatisfied" (<13.5, n
