The pillars of the sea: strategies to achieve successful marine citizen science programs in the Mediterranean area.

Marine ecosystems are facing a dramatic loss of biodiversity worldwide, together with a widespread collapse of habitats and their functionality. In this context, Marine Citizen Science (MCS) can be a powerful tool to monitor these changes over time. The flowering of very well-structured international projects is strengthening the scientific credibility of MCS data, especially when data are collected after specifically designed training programs and shared in public user-friendly repositories. Here we present a new perspective on the use of MCS in the Mediterranean area, along with the main ben

A closer look at calcium-induced interactions between phosphatidylserine-(PS) doped liposomes and the structural effects caused by inclusion of gangliosides or polyethylene glycol- (PEG) modified lipids.

The effects of polyethylene glycol- (PEG) modified lipids and gangliosides on the Ca2+ induced interaction between liposomes composed of palmitoyl-oleoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (POPE) and palmitoyl-oleoyl phosphatidylserine (POPS) was investigated at physiological ionic strength. Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) studies complemented with dynamic light scattering (DLS) and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) show that naked liposomes tend to adhere, rupture, and collapse on each other's surfaces upon addition of Ca2+, eventually resulting in the formation of large multilam

Fatality in the perioperative period: A case report on refractory hypoxemia in an infant following open inguinal herniotomy.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE OF THE CASE: Post-operative adverse respiratory events are not uncommon among infants. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 2-month-old male infant with an acyanotic heart disease underwent an elective open inguinal herniotomy under general anaesthesia. The intraoperative period was uneventful. The infant developed intermittent respiratory apnea and low oxygen saturation, followed by bradycardia in the post-anaesthesia care unit. Despite continued resuscitative efforts, the baby succumbed. The autopsy did not reveal new pathology. A period of interrupted monitoring during the r

Median Sternotomy as a Useful Adjunct to Anterior Cervicothoracic Spine Decompression and Fixation: A Plea for Its Popularity among Spine Surgeons in West Africa.

Direct anterior approach to the cervicothoracic spine (C7-T4) for surgery can be challenging via a standard anterior cervical incision as a result of the important neurovascular structures crowding the cervicothoracic junction. Where indicated, median sternotomy provides improved access to this region of the spine for interventions. From the paucity of published literature in West Africa, this adjunct appears to be quite unpopular among spine surgeons in our sub-region. We report the presentation, preoperative evaluation, operative technique and outcome of treatment of a 66-year-old man with m

Sox10 Gene Is Required for the Survival of Saccular and Utricular Hair Cells in a Porcine Model.

Pathological changes of the cochlea and hearing loss have been well addressed in Waardenburg syndrome (WS). However, the vestibular organ malformation in WS is still largely unknown. In this study, the differentiation and development of vestibular sensory epithelium and vestibular function caused by SOX10 mutation, a critical gene induces WS, have been studied in minature pig model. Degeneration of vestibular hair cells was found in this Sox10 mutation porcine model. Inner ear phenotype of the SOX10+/R109W miniature pigs showed cochlear abnormalities as well as saccular hypofunction. In the mu

Palatal anatomy for sleep apnea surgery.

UNLABELLED: The goal of this review is to advance the understanding of the muscular and soft tissue palatal anatomy as it relates to palatal surgery for sleep apnea and the phenotypic variations that generate the shape and collapsibility of the retropalatal airway. Anatomically, the soft palate has both a proximal and distal segments separated by the palatal genu. The proximal palatal segment has a variable angle from the hard palate (ie, alpha angle) determined by the position and length of the levator veli palatini muscle. The palatopharyngeus muscle (PP) is a major defining element of the p

Facile stabilization of a cyclodextrin metal-organic framework under humid environment via hydrogen sulfide treatment.

Increasing resistance to humid environments is a major challenge for the application of γ-CD-K-MOF (a green MOF) in real-world utilisation. γ-CD-K-MOF-H2S with enhanced moisture tolerance was obtained by simply treating MOF with H2S gas. XPS, Raman and TGA characterizations indicated that the H2S molecules coordinated with the metal centers in the framework. H2S acting as a newly available water adsorption potential well near the potassium centers protects the metal-ligand coordination bond from attack by water molecules and thus improves the moisture stability of MOF. After 7 days exposure in

Diagnostic Criteria for Commotio Cordis Caused by Violent Attack: Review of the Literature.

The diagnosis of lethal commotio cordis (CC) is really complex. The forensic pathologist's task is even more relevant when he/she has to explain a CC diagnosis caused by an assault in a trial. The purpose of this study was to analyze the literature on lethal CC as a result of violent attacks and identify relevant parameters that may help in the diagnosis. A review of the relevant articles was performed. Fifty-two cases of CC caused by violent attacks were identified. The collected data allowed to confirm the following literature's criteria for CC diagnosis in case of assaults: witnessed occurr

Anatomy, pathophysiology and classification of posterior tibial tendon dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: Adult acquired flatfoot deformity is generally associated with a collapsing medial longitudinal arch and a progressive loss of strength of the posterior tibial tendon (PTT). This condition is commonly associated with PTT dysfunction or rupture, which can have an arthritic or a traumatic etiology. Several causes have been proposed to explain the clinical evidence of tendon degeneration observed at the time of surgery including trauma, anatomical, mechanical, inflammatory and ischemic factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this review, we analyzed anatomy, pathophysiology and existing cl

Options for Middle Vault and Dorsum Restoration after Hump Removal in Primary Rhinoplasty.

Prevention of unfavorable sequelae following humpectomy in reduction rhinoplasty by restoration of the middle nasal vault complex today has become imperative in the majority of patients with perhaps the exception of small humps. In general, the techniques used for preservation and reconstruction of these important anatomical structures can be divided into two main categories: spreader graft and spreader flap techniques. Oversimplified spreader graft techniques require donor cartilage, whereas spreader flap techniques use the excess height of the medial portion of the upper lateral cartilages i

Adult-onset laryngomalacia: case reports and review of management.

Laryngomalacia is a dynamic airway condition characterised by inward collapse of flaccid supraglottic structures during inspiration. Although the most common cause of stridor in the paediatric population, adult-onset laryngomalacia remains a rare entity and its management, challenging. Two cases of adult-onset laryngomalacia are reported. A review of the English literature is performed and additional publications identified by hand-searching relevant papers; 13 case reports/series comprising 28 cases of adult-onset laryngomalacia were identified, divided into two main groups: idiopathic (6/28)

Pathophysiology and diagnostic approach to laryngomalacia in infants.

Laryngomalacia is defined as collapse of supraglottic structures during inspiration. It is the most common laryngeal disease of infancy. Laryngomalacia presents in the form of stridor, a high-pitched, musical, vibrating, multiphase inspiratory noise appearing within the first 10 days of life. Signs of severity are present in 10% of cases: poor weight gain (probably the most contributive element), dyspnoea with permanent and severe intercostal or xyphoid retraction, episodes of respiratory distress, obstructive sleep apnoea, and/or episodes of suffocation while feeding or feeding difficulties.

Acute traumatic aortic injuries: posttherapy multidetector CT findings.

Acute traumatic aortic injury is a life-threatening entity that requires emergent treatment. Treatment was once performed with left thoracotomy, resection of the damaged aortic segment, and placement of an interposition graft. Within the past decade, endovascular therapy has gained increased acceptance, primarily because of a significant decrease in mortality and morbidity compared with those of surgery. The authors reviewed the experience with management of acute traumatic aortic injuries at their institution, as well as that reported in the literature. Complications after endovascular repair

Histochemical and chronological analysis of mouse submandibular gland parenchyma subjected to abrupt reperfusion.

We examined the effects of abrupt reperfusion on the mouse submandibular gland parenchyma and determined the degree of recovery from tissue damage. A main trophic artery supplying the gland was ligated with silk thread, and the ligature was then released after a variable period. The gland was removed at various times after reperfusion and then examined immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally. With reperfusion after 15 or 30 min of ligation, the tissue damage to the glands was slight or inapparent. With reperfusion after 1 or 3 h of ligation, collapse of the acini and the ducts was observed

Long structural allografts in the treatment of anterior spinal column defects.

A retrospective study of 41 patients who had anterior spinal column reconstruction using long-segment allografts between 1983 and 1998 is reported. A long-segment allograft was defined as an allograft strut that replaces a vertebral body or approximates the height of the adjacent vertebral body for the thoracolumbar or lumbar spine, or more than two vertebral bodies for the cervical or cervicothoracic spine. Forty of the 41 patients had successful anterior strut grafting with radiographic evidence of allograft incorporation at the last followup with the majority of patients having radiographic

Renal pathology in rats bearing tumour-secreting growth hormone.

The effects of growth hormone (GH) on renal structure and function were investigated in rats aged 10-16 weeks bearing a tumour secreting GH. Body weight gain, food intake, urine volume, and urinary excretion of creatinine and urea nitrogen were significantly greater in tumour-bearing rats than in controls. The tumour-bearing rats presented progressive proteinuria, hyperproteinaemia, and hyperlipidaemia. Creatinine clearance was significantly higher in experimental animals during the early experimental stage, but decreased as the glomerular lesions progressed, associated with a rise in serum cr

[Emergency treatment in chest trauma (author's transl)].

The measures taken by the emergency physician can in many cases decisively affect the subsequent course of a chest trauma. In cases where the injured person has to be extricated from collapsed structures the medical officer has to decide on the mode and sequence of the rescue operation, prevent further damage and initiate shock therapy, intubation and artificial ventilation while the rescue operation is in progress. Emergency treatment also includes infusion therapy, if necessary via a central venous catheter; intubation, suction drainage and artificial ventilation; evacuation of fluid from th

Diagnostic performance and reader confidence of MRI-derived CT-like images in patients with femoral head necrosis.

Femoral head necrosis (FHN) requires accurate imaging for staging and treatment planning. While MRI is sensitive, conventional sequences may miss subchondral fractures. A CT-like MRI sequence combines CT-like structural detail with soft-tissue contrast. We evaluated its performance for Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) staging compared with MRI and radiography. In this retrospective study, 21 patients (33 hips) with confirmed FHN underwent radiography and MRI, including T1- and T2-weighted sequences and a T1-weighted gradient-echo CT-like sequence. Two musculoskeletal imaging spe

Cold exposure induced cognitive impairment: A systematic review.

Extreme cold exposure has emerged as a significant global public health challenge to cognitive function among populations such as military personnel, polar workers, and residents of high-latitude regions. However, the complex mechanisms underlying cold environment-induced cognitive impairment remain to be systematically elucidated. This systematic review synthesizes the effects of cold exposure (CE) on cognitive function and the potential biological mechanisms involved. CE impairs cognition through four interconnected pathways: neuroendocrine dysregulation, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation,
