Multimodal biomechanical dataset from transtibial amputees and able-bodied adults across five locomotion tasks.

This dataset addresses the need for multimodal biomechanical recordings during over-ground walking, ramps, and stairs by synchronously capturing electromyographic (EMG), inertial (IMU), and plantar pressure data. We collected data from 45 adults (15 with unilateral transtibial amputation and 30 without amputation) who completed five standardized locomotor tasks: level walking, ramp ascent/descent, and stair ascent/descent. Each participant performed 50 supervised trials. Wireless EMG and IMU sensors (Delsys Trigno Avanti) measured muscle activation and kinematics, while intelligent insoles (XS

ToxoNet: A high confidence map of protein-protein interactions in Toxoplasma gondii.

The apicomplexan intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a major food borne pathogen that is highly prevalent in the global population. The majority of the T. gondii proteome remains uncharacterized and the organization of proteins into complexes is unclear. To overcome this knowledge gap, we used a biochemical fractionation strategy to predict interactions by correlation profiling. To overcome the deficit of high-quality training data in non-model organisms, we complemented a supervised machine learning strategy, with an unsupervised approach, based on similarity network fusion. The resul…

Contemporary attitudes and beliefs on coronary artery calcium from social media using artificial intelligence.

Coronary artery calcium (CAC) is a powerful tool to refine atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk assessment. Despite its growing interest, contemporary public attitudes around CAC are not well-described in literature and have important implications for shared decision-making around cardiovascular prevention. We used an artificial intelligence (AI) pipeline consisting of a semi-supervised natural language processing model and unsupervised machine learning techniques to analyze 5,606 CAC-related discussions on Reddit. A total of 91 discussion topics were identified and were classif…

Histopathological biomarkers for predicting the tumour accumulation of nanomedicines.

The clinical prospects of cancer nanomedicines depend on effective patient stratification. Here we report the identification of predictive biomarkers of the accumulation of nanomedicines in tumour tissue. By using supervised machine learning on data of the accumulation of nanomedicines in tumour models in mice, we identified the densities of blood vessels and of tumour-associated macrophages as key predictive features. On the basis of these two features, we derived a biomarker score correlating with the concentration of liposomal doxorubicin in tumours and validated it in three syngeneic tumou…

Molecular heterogeneity in urothelial carcinoma and determinants of clinical benefit to PD-L1 blockade.

Checkpoint inhibitors targeting programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1)/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) have revolutionized cancer therapy across many indications including urothelial carcinoma (UC). Because many patients do not benefit, a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying response and resistance is needed to improve outcomes. We profiled tumors from 2,803 UC patients from four late-stage randomized clinical trials evaluating the PD-L1 inhibitor atezolizumab by RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), a targeted DNA panel, immunohistochemistry, and digital pathology. On-line anxiety level detection from biosignals: Machine learning based on a randomized controlled trial with spider-fearful individuals.

We present performance results concerning the validation for anxiety level detection based on trained mathematical models using supervised machine learning techniques. The model training is based on biosignals acquired in a randomized controlled trial. Wearable sensors were used to collect electrocardiogram, electrodermal activity, and respiration from spider-fearful individuals. We designed and applied ten approaches for data labeling considering individual biosignals as well as subjective ratings. Performance results revealed a selection of trained models adapted for two-level (low and high)…

Machine learning applied to chemical analysis: sensing multiple biomarkers in simulated breath using a temperature-pulsed electronic-nose.

Monitoring of chemical species in breath offers an approach for the detection of disease and other conditions that cause homeostatic imbalance. Here, we demonstrate the use of microsensor-based devices for detecting select biomarkers in simulated exhaled breath as a step toward enabling fast and inexpensive breath-screening technology. Microhotplate elements functionalized with three chemiresistive metal-oxide films (SnO(2), In(2)O(3), and CuO) were used to acquire data in simulated breath containing single targets [(5 to 20) μmol/mol ammonia, methanol, and acetone], as well as mixtures of tho

Importance of immunometabolic markers for the classification of patients with major depressive disorder using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Although there is scientific evidence of the presence of immunometabolic alterations in major depression, not all patients present them. Recent studies point to the association between an inflammatory phenotype and certain clinical symptoms in patients with depression. The objective of our study was to classify major depression disorder patients using supervised learning algorithms or machine learning, based on immunometabolic and oxidative stress biomarkers and lifestyle habits. METHODS: Taking into account a series of inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers (C-reactive prot

Dietary Patterns and the Social Development Index in Mexico City: A Machine-Learning Approach.

BACKGROUND: Dietary composition reflects the interplay of individual and contextual factors, yet its relationship with socioeconomic-territorial conditions remains insufficiently characterized in large Latin American cities. METHODS: We identified empirical dietary patterns among 3439 adults from the cohort in Mexico City and examined their association with the Social Development Index (SDI), a composite area-level measure of socioeconomic-territorial development. Energy-adjusted food-group intakes were analyzed using k-means clustering, and supervised machine-learning models with SHAP-based

Pan-Ret: a semi-supervised framework for scalable detection of pan-retinal diseases.

It has been shown in recent years that a range of optical diseases have early manifestation in retinal fundus images. It is becoming increasingly important to separate the regions of interest (RoI) upfront in the automated classification pipeline in order to ensure the alignment of the disease diagnosis with clinically relevant visual features. In this work, we introduce Pan-Ret, a semi-supervised framework which starts with locating the abnormalities in the biomedically relevant RoIs of a retinal image in an "annotation-agnostic" fashion. It does so by leveraging an anomaly detection setup us

Machine Learning for Diagnosis and Differentiation of Central Disorders of Hypersomnolence: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Central disorders of hypersomnolence (CDH) are, except for Narcolepsy Type 1 (NT1), difficult to diagnose and manage because of overlapping features and the lack of reliable biomarkers. Machine learning (ML) has the potential to improve diagnosis by detecting subtle physiological patterns and distinguishing between CDH subtypes. This review systematically explores current ML applications in CDH, assesses their limitations, and suggests future directions. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, IEEE Xplore, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Google Sch

Development of a Heart Rate Variability Based Ambulatory Stress Detection Model for Clinical Populations.

Biosensor-based, real-time stress detection has generated clinical interest for the purpose of driving just-in-time interventions that support recovery from mental disorders. Most stress detection models to date, however, have been trained with laboratory-based data from homogenous samples of healthy adults, and do not perform as well in clinical populations. As an initial step toward the development of a stress detection algorithm that functions well in clinical populations, we tested a series of stress-detection machine learning models on ambulatory electrocardiogram (ECG) and daily ecologic

B-mode ultrasound-based CAD by learning using privileged information with dual-level missing modality completion.

Learning using privileged information (LUPI) has shown its effectiveness to improve the B-mode ultrasound (BUS) based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) by transferring knowledge from the elasticity ultrasound (EUS). However, LUPI only performs transfer learning between the paired data with shared labels, and cannot handle the scenario of modality imbalance. In order to conduct the supervised transfer learning between the paired ultrasound data together with the additional single-modal BUS images, a novel multi-view LUPI algorithm with Dual-Level Modality Completion, named DLMC-LUPI, is proposed t
