Methods to improve antibacterial properties of PEEK: A review.

As a thermoplastic and bioinert polymer, polyether ether ketone (PEEK) serves as spine implants, femoral stems, cranial implants, and joint arthroplasty implants due to its mechanical properties resembling the cortical bone, chemical stability, and radiolucency. Although there are standards and antibiotic treatments for infection control during and after surgery, the infection risk is lowered but can not be eliminated. The antibacterial properties of PEEK implants should be improved to provide better infection control. This review includes the strategies for enhancing the antibacterial propert

Bridged Ethylene Polyethylene Oxide Surfaces to Improve Packing Materials for Widepore Size Exclusion Chromatography.

Here, we describe the preparation of bridged ethylene polyethylene oxide (BE-PEO) surface-modified silica packing materials for size exclusion chromatography. BE-PEO surface-modified silica was hydrolyzed and subsequent 1H nuclear magnetic resonance analysis of hydrolysis products confirmed the successful formation of BE-PEO bonded surface. Silica particles exhibiting 3 µm diameters and 1000 Å nominal pore diameters were selected as a base material for this work out of the critical need to improve analytical capabilities for the testing of cell and gene therapy drug products. Accelerated high

Effect of rapid cooling on residual stress and surface fracture toughness of dental zirconia.

Short-time sintering of dental zirconia not only improves manufacturing efficiency of zirconia prosthetics, but also enables an attractive situation in which prosthetic treatment can be completed within a single visit. Although many studies have clarified the effects of heating rate and dwell time on the properties of dental zirconia during short-time sintering, there are only a few studies on rapid cooling. In this study, we investigated the effect of cooling rate on dental zirconia. It was found that the cooling rate had no effect on the three-point flexural strength, but a fast cooling rate

Mechanical and bioactive properties of PVD TiO2 coating modified PEEK for biomedical applications.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is gaining popularity in the biomedical field due to its excellent mechanical properties, chemical resistance and biocompatibility. Although PEEK is an excellent biomaterial, it may require bulk surface modification to tailor its properties for specific biomedical applications. In this study, the surface modification of PEEK was achieved by depositing titanium dioxide (TiO2) by PVD method. The microstructure and mechanical properties of TiO2 coatings were studied by SEM/EDS and nanoindentation tests. Conventional scratch tests were performed to determine the adhesio

The physical properties of the stick insect pad secretion are independent of body size.

Many insects use adhesive organs to climb. The ability to cling to surfaces is advantageous but is increasingly challenged as animals grow, due to the associated reduction in surface-to-volume ratio. Previous work has demonstrated that some climbing animals overcome this scaling problem by systematically altering the maximum force per area that their adhesive pads can sustain; their adhesive organs become more efficient as they grow, an observation which is also of substantial relevance for the design of bioinspired adhesives. What is the origin of this change in efficiency? In insects, adhesi
