Patient and professional use of the root coverage esthetic score (RES) and how it relates to patient satisfaction following periodontal plastic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Following periodontal plastic surgery in the treatment of recession defects, previous studies have reported that patients rate the esthetic outcomes more favorable than dental professionals. The root coverage esthetic score has been developed and suggested to serve as a comprehensive assessment instrument as it addresses several esthetic outcomes following root coverage procedures. However, no study has yet reported on patient use of this instrument. In the present study clinical, esthetic and patient-reported outcomes following periodontal plastic surgery were assessed. The primar

Psychiatric Comorbidities Requiring Antidepressant Therapy and Their Impact on Wound Healing and Postoperative Complications in Facial Plastic Surgery: A Propensity-Score Matched Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Antidepressant medications are widely prescribed, yet their perioperative effects in facial plastic surgery remain poorly defined. Certain antidepressant classes have been associated with altered platelet function and potential changes in wound healing. This study evaluated the association between preoperative antidepressant exposure and postoperative complications following aesthetic facial plastic surgery procedures. METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted using the TriNetX Research Network. Patients undergoing rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, or rhytidectomy were ide

Facial Fracture Management and Outcome Differences Between Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Otolaryngology: A Retrospective Analysis at a Single Institution, 2010 to 2020.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Facial injury consults often receive dual coverage by plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) and otolaryngology (ENT) services, with reported variations in management patterns between specialties. However, studies have not separated fracture patterns or reported variations in care specific to ENT or PRS. This single-institutional study evaluates differences in management and outcomes of frontal sinus fractures treated by PRS and ENT. METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified adult patients with frontal sinus fractures from 2010 to 2020. Wilcoxon rank sum and F

[An example of a hub and spoke network system in Plastic Surgery: the Regional reference center for non-healing wounds in Ancona (Italy)].

Chronic wounds cause morbidity due to local infections, sepsis, osteomyelitis, but also increase mortality in the most severe cases and in patients with multiple comorbidities. Their increasing prevalence, associated disabilities and relevant health costs make chronic wounds a real social disease. At a time in which we hear more and more about spending reviews and reduction of health care costs, the natural evolution of Medicine and Health Care is increasingly directed towards the achievement of high quality standards while at the same time, reducing costs. It is in this framework that a hub a

In vitro and in vivo biocompatibility, bioavailability and tolerance of an injectable vehicle for adipose-derived stem/stromal cells for plastic surgery indications.

Soft tissue reconstruction is a challenge in plastic surgery, when replacing lost materials and correcting contour defects. Many permanent and temporary fillers have been used to restore the volume of these lesions, but often with poor results and even complications. Adipose-derived stem/stromal cells (ASCs) and adipose tissue engineering have been suggested as valuable alternatives. In order to inject these cultured cells, it was essential to find a suitable vehicle. The purpose of this study was to evaluate Cytocare(®), an injectable medical device, composed of hyaluronic acid plus amino aci

The concepts of evidence-based periodontal plastic surgery: Application of the principles of evidence-based dentistry for the treatment of recession-type defects.

The decision-making process for the treatment of recession-type defects is based on translation of the outcomes from randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews to clinical practice. Such an approach is capable of assisting researchers, clinicians, and patients to understand the mechanisms and effects of the treatment of different root-coverage procedures, as well as turning treatment options into usable and predictable tools to be applied in dental practice. This review explores: (a) the aspects related to the etiology of gingival recession; (b) the history of periodontal plastic surg

A quantitative comparison of psychological and emotional health measures in 360 plastic surgery candidates: is there a difference between aesthetic and reconstructive patients?

This study examines the utility of the aesthetic and reconstructive categorization for making treatment decisions in patients seeking facial surgery. A total of 360 patients with aesthetic or combined functional aesthetic deficits were included. Validated psychological scales were used as outcome measures. All subjects showed clinically significant levels of appearance-related distress, with highest levels in the aesthetic and lowest levels in the functionally impaired group. Significant gender differences were not found on any psychological measures. A small negative correlation was found bet
