PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Systemic sclerosis is a debilitating rheumatic disease with high morbidity and mortality. This review attempts to provide the most recent update on mortality and survival and their determinants in systemic sclerosis (SSc).
RECENT FINDINGS: SSc remains an uncommon rheumatic disease with high mortality. There have been attempts to devise more comprehensive but simpler scoring systems to prognosticate survival in SSc, which will influence triaging of patients and guide the utilization of aggressive treatment strategies.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid storm (TS) is life threatening. In the mid-2000s, its incidence was poorly defined, peer-reviewed diagnostic criteria were not available, and management and treatment did not seem to be verified based upon evidence and latest advances in medicine.

This meta-analysis was designed to determine the effect of surgical and nonsurgical approaches on 5-year and 10-year overall survival (OS) in patients with recurrent thymoma. PubMed, Scopus, and the Journal of Japanese Association for Chest Surgery were queried, and 11 studies were eligible. Oncology professionals are fully aware that the five-year mark of being disease-free after the diagnosis of cancer is not a magical number. Cancer is now considered a chronic disease and recurrence can happen at any time, which is unexpected and frightening. Yet, for me, and for many other cancer survivors, the five-year mark is one to be celebrated.

Over 60% of the American population meets the criteria for obesity, and obesity is very common in patients with breast cancer. Many studies have shown that obese patients with breast cancer have a worse prognosis compared to normal weight individuals. Tumor characteristics and other factors contribute to this. Aiming at assessing the impact of the improvements introduced in the treatment of primitive liver tumors of children, we reviewed our experience with these tumors since 1980. Between January 1980 and June 1999 we treated 62 children with primitive liver tumors: 35 hepatoblastomas (HB), 5 hepatocarcinomas (HC), 4 sarcomas, 2 malignant mesenchymomas, 11 hemangioendotheliomas (HE), 3 mesenchymal hamartomas, 1 adenoma and 1 focal nodular hyperplasia. The study of gastric cancer is important in clinical medicine as well as in public health. Environmental factors play an important role in gastric carcinogenesis and thus primary prevention is feasible after improvement of these factors.
