Swallowing, speech and quality of life in patients undergoing resection of soft palate.

The aim of this study was to evaluate swallowing, speech and quality of life in patients undergoing surgery for malignant tumors involving soft palate. We performed a cross sectional study of 23 patients (aged 32-80 years), submitted to soft palate resection, free of disease for at least 1 year. Primary closure of the surgical defect was performed in 5 patients (21.7 %), adaptation of a palatal obturator prosthesis in 2 (8.7 %), myocutaneous flap in 5 (21.7 %), local flap in 2 (8.7 %) and microsurgical free flap in 9 (39.1 %). All patients were submitted to fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation and

Effects of nasal continuous positive-airway pressure on nutritive swallowing in lambs.

Current knowledge suggests that, to be successful, oral feeding in preterm infants should be initiated as soon as possible, often at an age where immature respiration still requires ventilatory support in the form of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP). While some neonatologist teams claim great success with initiation of oral feeding in immature infants with nCPAP, others strictly wait for this ventilatory support to be no longer necessary before any attempt at oral feeding, fearing laryngeal penetration and tracheal aspiration. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to pro

Differences in biomechanical features of tongue pressure production between articulation and swallow.

Summary  The purpose of this study was to compare the tongue pressure against the hard palate during the articulation of a monosyllable with that during swallowing. The participants were 20 healthy adults without swallowing or articulation disorder (10 men and 10 women, mean age ± standard deviation: 22·5 ± 0·9 years). Tongue pressure during articulation of [ki] (articulatory pressure) and during dry swallowing (swallowing pressure) was recorded by a 0·1-mm-thick sensor sheet with five measuring points attached to the hard palate. Biomechanical parameters such as maximal magnitude, duration, i

Is aspiration during swallowing more common in Canadian children with indigenous heritage?

While many factors that contribute to the occurrence of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in Canadian indigenous children have been described, the role of aspiration during swallowing has not been explored in these children. Because of an increase in referrals of indigenous children from our catchment area (Manitoba, North Western Ontario, and Nunavut) for assessment of aspiration during swallowing, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 325 consecutive children undergoing videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS) to evaluate which factors, including indigenous heritage

Analysis of video fluoroscopic swallowing study in patients with vocal cord paralysis.

We reviewed the findings of a video fluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) of 28 patients with vocal cord paralysis (VCP) who complained of swallowing difficulties. VFSSs were performed with thick and thin liquid using modified Logemann methods. The patients were grouped according to whether their VCP was of central or peripheral origin, and the VFSS findings of the groups were compared. The patients showed oral phase dysfunction and pharyngeal dysfunction, especially when the cause was of central origin. Oral phase abnormalities were found in 13 patients and pharyngeal phase abnormalities were

Elongated styloid process: an unusual cause of neck pain and difficulty in swallowing.

An elongated styloid process is an unusual source of craniofacial and cervical pain. This condition is characterized by a dull, nagging pharyngeal pain and a palpatory finding in the tonsillar fossa. Eagle described it for the first time in 1937 as Eagle's Syndrome and divided it into two subtypes: the "classic syndrome" and the "stylo-carotid syndrome." The syndrome generally follows tonsillectomy or trauma. Diagnosis is confirmed by radiological findings. Palpation of the styloid process in the tonsillar fossa and infiltration with anesthetic are also used for making a diagnosis. This articl

Positive findings on barium swallow in patients presenting with a "sensation of a lump in the throat".

Our objective is to evaluate the pickup rate of a significant pathology, on barium swallow, in patients who present to our clinic with a feeling of a lump in the throat (globus symptoms). Hospital--secondary referral centre. This is a retrospective study of 192 patients who had barium swallow in our department between August 2009 and August 2010. We revised 500 case notes to rule in 192 who presented with only a feeling of a lump in their throat. All patients with positive clinical findings, such as dysphagia, odynophagia, referred otalgia, hoarseness of voice, weight loss, neck swelling or vo

Incidence of swallowing during exercise in horses with dorsal displacement of the soft palate.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The relationship between dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP) and swallowing is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the relationship between DDSP and swallowing in horses at exercise. HYPOTHESES: The frequency of swallowing increases immediately prior to DDSP in horses at exercise. METHODS: Videoendoscopic and upper airway pressure data were collated from horses with a definitive diagnosis of DDSP at exercise. Horses with no upper airway abnormalities were matched by age, breed and sex and used as controls. Sixty-nine horses were identified with a definiti

Experimental exposure of swallow bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) to West Nile virus.

The cliff swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota, Vieillot) could potentially play an important role in the transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) because of its breeding ecology, reservoir competence status, and potentially high natural exposure rates. These birds nest in colonies and their nests are occupied year round by swallow bugs (Oeciacus vicarius, Hovarth), hematophagus ectoparasites that feed primarily on cliff swallows. Swallow bugs are most likely exposed to WNV while feeding on infectious blood of cliff swallows and, thus, if competent vectors, could contribute to initiation and mainten…

Perception of wet vocal quality in identifying penetration/aspiration during swallowing.

PURPOSE: In the present study, the authors investigated the association between wet vocal quality (WVQ) and prandial material in the larynx during phonation. The presence of such material is indicative of oropharyngeal dysphagia and results from entry of material into the laryngeal vestibule during swallowing. The primary aim of the study was to determine whether clinicians reliably perceive WVQ during phonation when prandial material is in the larynx. METHOD: Seventy-eight subjects underwent videofluoroscopic swallow study, and simultaneous recording of time-linked videofluoroscopic and acou

Rehabilitation of speech and swallowing after burns reconstructive surgery of the lips and nose.

Rehabilitation of speech and swallowing postburns reconstructive surgery has not been previously described in detail in the literature. Severe facial burn injury requiring subsequent reconstructive surgery may result in complications including circumoral contracture and aesthetic and functional irregularities. These complications may manifest as facial and labial sensation deficits, poor oral access for intubation and oral/dental hygiene, and inadequate oral competence causing chronic drooling and poor articulation. This report describes the physical rehabilitation of a patient with full-thick

CPAP inhibits non-nutritive swallowing through stimulation of bronchopulmonary receptors.

While swallowing and respiratory problems are among the most frequent disorders encountered in neonates, the interrelationships between both functions are not completely understood. This is especially true for non-nutritive swallowing (NNS), which fulfills the important function of clearing upper airways from both local secretions and liquids refluxed from the stomach. Recently, we showed that nasal CPAP inhibits NNS during quiet sleep in the newborn lamb (Samson, St-Hilaire, Nsegbe, Reix, Moreau-Bussière and Praud 2005). The present study was aimed at testing the hypothesis that NNS inhibitio

A novel system using the Forced Oscillations Technique for the biomechanical analysis of swallowing.

Physiological studies of swallowing and the diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia are crucially dependent of detailed information of respiratory and feeding events. However, this information has been obtained by indirect and/or expensive methods, as well as by methods demanding exposure to radiation. In this context, the purpose of this study was twofold: (1) describe a new low-cost system for the analysis of the respiratory events during swallowing using the Forced Oscillation Technique and (2) evaluate the performance of this device in the description of physiological events during water swal
