Non pathological sweat test, pancreatic insufficiency and Cystic Fibrosis: an unusual case in a child with F508del-duplication of exons 1-3 CFTR genotype.

While Cystic Fibrosis is characterized by a high phenotypic variability, a correlation is reported between the pancreatic status and the CFTR genotype. Here we report an unusual case of a child with Cystic Fibrosis (F508del-duplication of exons 1-3 genotype) diagnosed at 8 years old for pancreatic insufficiency and non-pathological sweat test, in absence of respiratory symptoms and acute episodes of pancreatitis. Nasal potential differences and intestinal current measurements were normal, while the short-circuit current measured on patient-derived colonoids grown on Transwell® indicated the pr…

Development of an anodic stripping voltammetric assay, using a disposable mercury-free screen-printed carbon electrode, for the determination of zinc in human sweat.

This paper reports on the development of a novel electrochemical assay for Zn(2+) in human sweat, which involves the use of disposable screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs). Initially, SPCEs were used in conjunction with cyclic voltammetry to study the redox characteristics of Zn(2+) in a selection of supporting electrolytes. The best defined cathodic and anodic peaks were obtained with 0.1 M NaCl/0.1 M acetate buffer pH 6.0. The anodic peak was sharp and symmetrical which is typical for the oxidation of a thin metal film on the electrode surface. This behaviour was exploited in the develop…

A preliminary study of the short circuit current (Isc) responses of sweat gland cells from normal and anhidrotic horses to purinergic and adrenergic agonists.

The causal factors of equine anhidrosis have not yet been elucidated but defective electrolyte transport mechanisms in the gland are likely to be involved. To investigate this possibility, experiments were performed on cultured equine sweat gland epithelia from five free-sweating UK horses (3 intact males, 2 mares, aged 2-4 years) and from three free-sweating Singapore horses (1 intact male, 2 mares, aged 3-5 years) and three anhidrotic (Singapore) horses (1 intact male, 1 gelding, 1 mare, aged 3-6 years). Cultured cells from each animal were grown on permeable supports and loaded into Ussing …

A Case of Endocrine Mucin-Producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma Which Recurred 8 Years After Excision, and Exhibited Infiltrative Growth Pattern Without Any Mucinous Carcinoma.

An octogenarian man developed a recurrent cheek lesion 8 years after surgical resection. Although the histopathological features resembled those of endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC), small tumor nests lacking mucinous carcinoma components infiltrated the surrounding adipose tissue and striated muscle. This infiltrative morphology is inconsistent with the pushing invasion described by the WHO classification. To our knowledge, this is the first report of EMPSGC demonstrating this distinct growth pattern, the clinical significance of which remains unclear.

Capillary electrophoresis hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma-sector field-mass spectrometry for the detection of chromium species after incubation of chromium in simulated sweat.

The presence of chromium in chromium-tanned leather represents a considerable health problem since it can lead to chronic allergic contact dermatitis. Apart from trivalent chromium (Cr(III)), which is used for tanning, leather often contains hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), resulting from the oxidation of Cr(III) during the tanning process. This study deals with the chromium compounds in simulated sweat when brought into contact with Cr(III) or Cr(VI) and with chromium-tanned leathers. A capillary electrophoresis (CE) method was developed, with inductively coupled plasma-sector field-mass spectro…

Ancillary immunohistochemical and molecular testing in the classification of cutaneous sweat gland/duct neoplasms: A validation study with emphasis on histomorphologic correlation and pathological diagnosis.

Sweat gland neoplasms represent a challenging area of dermatopathology, as they are relatively uncommon and often histopathologically complex. Recent studies have uncovered distinct immunohistochemical and molecular profiles in several sweat gland neoplasms, including digital papillary adenocarcinoma (DPA), papillary eccrine adenoma/tubular apocrine adenoma (PEA/TAA), poroid family tumors (PFT)/porocarcinoma, and clear cell hidradenoma (CCH)/clear cell hidradenocarcinoma (CCHCa). To further evaluate the diagnostic utility of ancillary studies in various sweat gland neoplasms, we performed an i…

Comparing Compensatory Sweating After Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Sympathectomy: (T2-3) Versus (T2-4) Levels for Treating Palmar Hyperhidrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Primary hyperhidrosis is a disease that is characterized by excessive sweating beyond what is required to maintain the normal temperature of the body. Moreover, it has a great adverse effect on the life of the affected persons because of problems in their social lives. There are different modalities to treat primary hyperhidrosis, including medical and surgical treatment. However, in sympathectomy, there is still a lack of strong evidence regarding which level should be targeted to achieve maximum benefit with fewer complications. METHODS: This prospective clinical study was con…

The roles of the Na+/K+-ATPase, NKCC, and K+ channels in regulating local sweating and cutaneous blood flow during exercise in humans in vivo.

Na+/K+-ATPase has been shown to regulate the sweating and cutaneous vascular responses during exercise; however, similar studies have not been conducted to assess the roles of the Na-K-2Cl co-transporter (NKCC) and K+ channels. Additionally, it remains to be determined if these mechanisms underpinning the heat loss responses differ with exercise intensity. Eleven young (24 ± 4 years) males performed three 30-min semirecumbent cycling bouts at low (30% VO2peak), moderate (50% VO2peak), and high (70% VO2peak) intensity, respectively, each separated by 20-min recovery periods. Using intradermal m…

Effectiveness of nurse-led group CBT for hot flushes and night sweats in women with breast cancer: Results of the MENOS4 randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Troublesome hot flushes and night sweats (HFNS) are experienced by many women after treatment for breast cancer, impacting significantly on sleep and quality of life. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is known to be effective for the alleviation of HFNS. However, it is not known if it can effectively be delivered by specialist nurses. We investigated whether group CBT, delivered by breast care nurses (BCNs), can reduce the impact of HFNS. METHODS: We recruited women with primary breast cancer following primary treatment with seven or more HFNS/week (including 4/10 or above on the…
