Anxiety Impacts Cognitive Inhibition in Remitted Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders are complex psychiatric disorders, associated with alterations in neural and cognitive functioning. Research suggests inhibition and set-shifting deficits in anorexia nervosa (AN), but less is known about the persistence of these deficits after recovery, or their relationship to comorbid psychiatric symptoms. METHOD: Women aged 19-45 remitted from AN (RAN, N = 47) and controls (CW, N = 24) completed the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System Color-Word Interference Test. It was hypothesized that RAN, and those with higher anxiety or depression, would demonstrate wo

Aspects of Attention in Rett Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: We sought to examine fundamental aspects of attention in children with Rett syndrome, a severely disabling neurodevelopmental disorder caused by spontaneous mutations in the X-linked MECP2 gene. To gauge their attention, we used eye tracking, which bypasses the profound impairments in expressive language and hand use in Rett syndrome. We report two aspects of attention-shifting and sustaining-basic abilities known to drive cognitive growth. METHODS: Two groups were compared: those with Rett syndrome (N = 20; 3-15 years) and a typically developing comparison group (N = 14; 3-16 yea

Increased palatable food intake and response to food cues in intrauterine growth-restricted rats are related to tyrosine hydroxylase content in the orbitofrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is associated with altered food preferences, which may contribute to increased risk of obesity. We evaluated the effects of IUGR on attention to a palatable food cue, as well as tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) content in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and nucleus accumbens (NAcc) in response to sweet food intake. From day 10 of gestation and through lactation, Sprague-Dawley rats received either an ad libitum (Adlib) or a 50% food-restricted (FR) diet. At birth, pups were cross-fostered, generating four groups (gestation/lactation): Adlib/Adlib (control), FR/Ad

DNA methylation and cognitive functioning in healthy older adults.

Long-term supplementation with folic acid may improve cognitive performance in older individuals. The relationship between folate status and cognitive performance might be mediated by changes in methylation capacity, as methylation reactions are important for normal functioning of the brain. Although aberrant DNA methylation has been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders, the relationship between DNA methylation status and non-pathological cognitive functioning in human subjects has not yet been investigated. The present study investigated the associations between global DNA methylation a

Spider phobics more easily see a spider in morphed schematic pictures.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with social phobia are more likely to misinterpret ambiguous social situations as more threatening, i.e. they show an interpretive bias. This study investigated whether such a bias also exists in specific phobia. METHODS: Individuals with spider phobia or social phobia, spider aficionados and non-phobic controls saw morphed stimuli that gradually transformed from a schematic picture of a flower into a schematic picture of a spider by shifting the outlines of the petals until they turned into spider legs. Participants' task was to decide whether each stimulus was more s

Directed attention dichotic listening in reading disabled children: a test of four models of maladaptive lateralization.

In two experiments, critical a priori tests compared four competing LD theories of maladaptive language lateralization (Poor Structural Lateralization; Excessive RH Activation; Excessive LH Activation; Excessive LH or RH Activation). In Experiment 1, 32 auditory-linguistic LD children from public schools were compared to 32 high-achieving, age-matched controls. Experiment 2 replicated the main findings of Experiment 1 by comparing 14 LD children to 14 controls attending a private school. The effect of priming or ear order was analyzed in a directed attention, dichotic paradigm with strings of

Cerebellar function and ischemic brain lesions in migraine patients from the general population.

Objective The objective of this article is to obtain detailed quantitative assessment of cerebellar function and structure in unselected migraine patients and controls from the general population. Methods A total of 282 clinically well-defined participants (migraine with aura n = 111; migraine without aura n = 89; non-migraine controls n = 82; age range 43-72; 72% female) from a population-based study were subjected to a range of sensitive and validated cerebellar tests that cover functions of all main parts of the cerebellar cortex, including cerebrocerebellum, spinocerebellum, and vestibuloc

A robustness-first cross-disease framework supports a candidate shared microbial redox axis and disease-specific metabolic divergence in colorectal cancer, Crohn's disease, and liver cirrhosis.

UNLABELLED: Gut microbiome dysbiosis is associated with colorectal cancer (CRC), Crohn's disease (CD), and liver cirrhosis (LC), yet whether these diseases share conserved microbial vulnerabilities remains unresolved. Analytical pipeline choices alone can shift apparent performance from near-zero to near-perfect on identical data, rendering cross-disease comparison unreliable. Here, in a secondary cross-sectional analysis of public data sets, maximin optimization is introduced as a proposed pipeline-selection criterion guaranteeing worst-case performance across all tasks simultaneously. Benchm

Long-lasting amelioration of visuospatial neglect by prism adaptation.

It has been shown that unilateral left neglect can be significantly improved for a short time after a short period of adaptation to a prismatic shift of the visual field to the right. In neuropsychological studies, however, there is no evidence demonstrating long-lasting effects following treatment by prism adaptation (PA). The first aim of the present study was to find out whether the short-term amelioration found after prismatic adaptation could be converted into long-term therapeutic improvement. Secondly, we investigated whether the improvement of neglect in standard tests could be general

Revealing Li Staging Process in Graphite via a Genetic Algorithm Coupled with a Machine-Learning Interatomic Potential.

Graphite remains the dominant anode material in Li-ion batteries, yet a complete understanding of its Li intercalation mechanism, commonly described as staging, is still elusive. This difficulty arises from two fundamental challenges. First, the strong coupling between graphite stacking and Li ordering obscures the identification of consistent, state of charge (SOC)-dependent stable LixC structures, preventing a unified interpretation of the intercalation pathway. Second, identifying thermodynamically preferred LixC structures requires exploring a vast space of Li ordering and graphite stackin

A narrative review on cost considerations in early intervention for deaf and/or hard-of-hearing children in Africa.

Early intervention (EI) is essential for the language, social, and educational development of deaf and/or hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. In African countries, however, the implementation of EI remains significantly constrained by cost considerations and systemic service gaps. This narrative review synthesizes findings from 26 peer-reviewed publications to explore how cost influences access to and sustainability of EI services in Africa. Seven interrelated themes were identified: (i) high out-of-pocket expenses that limit family access to services; (ii) inadequate public funding and heavy reli

Strengthening rehabilitation to reduce burn contractures and disability in sub Saharan Africa.

Burn injuries remain a major yet under-recognized driver of long-term disability in low-and middle-income countries particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. While survival rates have improved in some settings, recovery often ends at hospital discharge. Thousands of survivors particularly children, women, and those living in poverty develop preventable burn contractures due to delayed or absent rehabilitation. These disabling complications restrict movement, limit education and employment opportunities, and reinforce cycles of poverty and exclusion. It has been shown that early, low-cost rehabilitation

Reward contingency reorganizes lateral orbitofrontal cortex pyramidal neuron activity from reward-aligned to action-aligned during associative learning.

BACKGROUND: Animals must learn not only which cues predict reward, but also when to act to obtain it. Although the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) encodes reward-related information, whether reward contingency is sufficient to reorganize the temporal alignment of OFC activity remains unclear. METHODS: We recorded calcium signals from lateral OFC pyramidal neurons (lOFC-PNs) in wild-type (WT) and Sapap3 knockout (KO) mice using fiber photometry, during sequential learning of Pavlovian and instrumental contingencies in a single-odor reward association task. We further used a cue-free lick test and l

Pre-circumcision screening for genital anomalies: 6-year experience from Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Pre-circumcision genital screening enables early detection of anomalies that contraindicate the procedure and require specialist management. In Pakistan, where most circumcisions are performed by untrained providers, such screening is rarely practiced. This study evaluated the effectiveness of training health workers (HWs) to identify genital anomalies through a structured Safe Circumcision Program (SCP). METHODS: A retrospective data review was conducted of all male infants presenting to the safe circumcision clinic at the Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) Karachi between Ju

A scoping review protocol on mental health interventions for women exposed to gender-based violence in Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence against women in Sub-Saharan Africa is highly prevalent, with profound mental health consequences including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety. Despite growing recognition of this public health crisis, evidence on mental health interventions remains fragmented across countries and populations, with limited synthesis of what interventions work, for whom, and under what conditions in African contexts. OBJECTIVE: To systematically map and synthesize evidence on mental health interventions for women who have experienced violence across

A Novel 3D-Printed Mouse Model for Surgical Training: Multicenter Construct, Face, and Content Validation Study.

Advancements in laboratory animal training increasingly incorporate technological innovations aiming to better align training standards with the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement). This trend is shifting away from traditional reliance on live animals and cadavers toward simulation-based methods. This study introduces and assesses the validity of a novel 3D-printed rodent surgical simulator designed for the practice and training of basic rodent surgical skills. To evaluate its potential to partially replace animal use, refine rodent surgical training, and reduce the number of animals

In Medio Stat Virtus: Moderate Cognitive Flexibility as a Key to Affective Flexibility Responses in Long-Term HRV.

This study examines the relationship between cognitive and affective flexibility, two critical aspects of adaptability. Cognitive flexibility involves switching between activities as rules change, assessed through task-switching or neuropsychological tests and questionnaires. Affective flexibility, meanwhile, refers to shifting between emotional and non-emotional tasks or states. Although similar conceptually, prior research shows inconsistent findings on their link, especially regarding physiological and self-reported measures. Affective flexibility was operationalized as changes in heart rat
