[Anatomopathologic diagnosis of parasitosis in Congo].

In the part ten years, 9,650 anatomopathologic examinations have been carried out in the National Laboratory of Histopathology for Public Health in Brazzaville: 250 cases of parasitic infestation were diagnosed. In order of frequency were noted; 144 cases of bilharzia due to Schistosoma haematobium with 75 genito-urinary localisations and 51 appendicular cases, 31 cases of onchocercosis with a majority of subcutaneous nodules (17), 17 cases of digestive helminthiasis all locate in the ileo-caecal-appendix and discovered during systematic appendicular exploration, 13 cases of colitic or recto-s

Management of alcoholic liver disease: an update.

Treatment of alcoholic liver disease is for the most part based on the stage of the disease and the pathogenic event that is being targeted. The primary treatment modalities that are considered in the treatment of alcoholic liver disease include abstinence, agents that suppress inflammation, anticytokine therapy, nutritional support, modifiers of alcohol metabolism, anti-oxidants, and inhibitors of hepatic fibrosis. Future therapeutic options include exploration of new pathways such as the patatin-like phospholipase domain containing 3 protein (PNPLA-3).

Sodium oxybate in maintaining alcohol abstinence in alcoholic patients with and without psychiatric comorbidity.

Sodium oxybate (SMO) is a GABA-ergic drug currently used for the treatment of alcohol-dependence in some European countries. In particular, clinical studies have shown a role of SMO in promoting alcohol abstinence, as well as in relieving withdrawal symptoms. The aim of this study was to describe alcohol abstinence and the onset of craving for and abuse of SMO in alcohol-dependent subjects with and without psychiatric co-morbidity. Forty-eight patients were enrolled and classified into two groups: group A (20 alcoholics without any psychiatric co-morbidity) and group B (28 alcoholics with a ps

Reduced expression of circadian clock genes in male alcoholic patients.

BACKGROUND: There are clear interactions between chronic alcohol consumption and circadian rhythmicity that is regulated by several circadian clock genes. The altered expressions of these genes have been mainly described in animals. The mammalian master clock in the suprachiasmatic nuclei orchestrates the biological rhythms in peripheral tissues. As peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) are the most accessible tissue clinically, we assessed the mRNA levels of these genes in patients with alcohol dependence (AD) undergoing alcohol-withdrawal (AW) treatment. METHODS: Twenty-two male patien

Lack of efficacy of naltrexone in the prevention of alcohol relapse: results from a German multicenter study.

In a placebo-controlled, double-blind German multicenter study (seven sites) the efficacy of naltrexone as an adjunctive treatment in alcoholism to maintain abstinence was assessed for 12 weeks. A total of 171 detoxified patients (97.7% met the DSM-III-R criteria for alcohol dependence) were included. Patients had been abstinent for a mean of 19.5 +/- 9.4 days at study entry. Eighty-four and 87 patients were randomized to receive naltrexone (50 mg/day) and placebo, respectively. Each site was instructed to provide its usual psychosocial alcohol treatment program. The primary effectiveness meas

Combined efficacy of acamprosate and disulfiram in the treatment of alcoholism: a controlled study.

This study presents the results of a multicenter investigation of the efficacy of acamprosate in the treatment of patients with chronic or episodic alcohol dependence. One hundred eighteen patients were randomly assigned to either placebo or acamprosate, and both groups were stratified for concomitant voluntary use of disulfiram. Treatment lasted for 360 days, with an additional 360-day follow-up period. The primary efficacy parameters evaluated were: relapse rate and cumulative abstinence duration (CAD). Results were analyzed according to Intention-To-Treat principles using chi2, t, and multi

Occurrence and patterns of driving behavior for alcoholics in treatment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the driving behaviors of male alcoholics. Two hundred and fifty-eight male alcoholics receiving treatment for alcoholism completed a self-administered questionnaire about their driving behaviour and official driver records were accessed. On average, the surveyed individuals drank and drove about 8.6 days per month at the legal level of impairment in Canada (i.e., 80 mg%). Evidence showed that about 88.3% of the sample had driven while impaired. The probability of being arrested for impaired driving was estimated to be about one in 1168 impaired driv

Unravelling Marine Benthic Functioning Shifts Under Ocean Acidification.

Ocean acidification (OA) driven by increasing atmospheric CO2 is altering marine biodiversity. However, impacts of OA on ecosystem functioning at the community level, including calcification, primary production and nutrient uptake, remain largely unknown. Here, we conducted community transplant experiments at natural CO2 vents to assess how declining pH affects marine community species composition, biomass, and key ecosystem processes over time. Our results indicate that community shifts caused by declining pH lead to decreased biomass and calcification rates, while photosynthesis and nutrient

Cradles, museums, and disequilibria: reconciling biodiversity dynamics using equilibrium theory.

Historical nonequilibrium processes are often considered the main drivers of global biodiversity patterns. We argue that while biodiversity is often out of equilibrium, the concept of equilibrium is still crucial for interpreting macroecological diversity patterns, and current confusion in the literature stems from misunderstandings concerning equilibrium dynamics. We demonstrate how an equilibrium-based framework, such as the 'Equilibrium Theory of Biodiversity Dynamics' (ETBD), illuminates diversity patterns in space and time, including the latitudinal diversity gradient, even in the out-of-

Opioid-free anaesthesia as a valuable alternative to opioid-based practices: evidence and future challenges.

Opioid-Free-Anesthesia (OFA) offers a valuable alternative model that challenges traditional opioid-based anesthesia practices. Recent studies have tempered expectations regarding the capacity of OFA techniques to improve quality of postoperative pain management and early recovery, in contrast with the clearly decreased risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Essentially based on regional anesthesia, non-opioid adjuvants and multimodal analgesia, OFA should be better viewed as a menu rather than a recipe, guided by surgical invasiveness, patient background, expected postoperative pain, and

Pediatric Interventions in a Sanfilippo Syndrome Patient Under General Anesthesia: A Case Report.

Background: Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) Type III (MPS III) or Sanfilippo syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive inherited metabolic disorder. This disorder is responsible for lysosomal storage disorder at the cellular aspect. Due to lysosomal enzyme perturbance leading to the alteration of macromolecule metabolisms, this cellular perturbance causes multiple severe systemic and mental outcomes. Sanfilippo syndrome is the most frequent lysosomal disorder among the different types of MPS. Case Presentation: A 9-year-9-month-old female was presented at our private clinic accompanied with her paren

New directions for the Journal of Health Psychology.

This editorial reflects on the current and future directions of the Journal of Health Psychology. As the Co-Editors in Chief, we briefly outline our positionality and the importance of our Editorial Board and other peer reviewers in ensuring the rigour of accepted articles. We comment on the middle-ground that has to be struck when considering the scope of open science given that data sharing has to be tempered by ethical and methodological considerations. We re-visit the aims and scope of the journal and reflect on some of the key aspects of diversity that set the journal apart from others. W

Human antibodies in Mexico and Brazil neutralizing tick-borne flaviviruses.

Flaviviruses such as dengue virus (DENV), Zika virus (ZIKV), and yellow fever virus (YFV) are spread by mosquitoes and cause human disease and mortality in tropical areas. In contrast, Powassan virus (POWV), which causes severe neurologic illness, is a flavivirus transmitted by ticks in temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere. We find serologic neutralizing activity against POWV in individuals living in Mexico and Brazil. Monoclonal antibodies P002 and P003, which were derived from a resident of Mexico (where POWV is not reported), neutralize POWV lineage I by recognizing an epitope on th

A case of Strongyloides Stercoralis induced duodenitis and pancreatitis.

Strongyloidiasis is endemic in tropical and sub-tropical regions however cases of strongyloidiasis have been reported in temperate climates. Corticosteroid use, immunosuppression, infection with human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV1), and chronic alcohol use are the most common and well-established risk factors for strongyloidiasis. Due to Strongyloides stercoralis characteristic features of hyperinfection and dissemination, it can potentially cause a lethal infection in an immunocompromised individual. Strongyloidiasis is predominantly asymptomatic, however some unusual manifestations of s

Epidemiology of Lyme Disease.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne illness in North America and Europe. The etiologic agent, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, is transmitted to humans by certain species of Ixodes ticks, which are found widely in temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere. Clinical features are diverse but death is rare. The risk of human infection is determined by the distribution and abundance of vector ticks, ecologic factors influencing tick infection rates, and human behaviors that promote tick bite. Rates of infection are highest among children aged 5 to 15 years and adults aged more than 50

Detection of Rift Valley Fever Virus RNA in Formalin-Fixed Mosquitoes by In Situ Hybridization (RNAscope®).

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) causes a zoonotic mosquito-borne haemorrhagic disease that emerges to produce rapid large-scale outbreaks in livestock within sub-Saharan Africa. A range of mosquito species in Africa have been shown to transmit RVFV, and recent studies have assessed whether temperate mosquito species are also capable of transmission. In order to support vector competence studies, the ability to visualize virus localization in mosquito cells and tissue would enhance the understanding of the infection process within the mosquito body. Here, the application of in situ hybridization

Nuclear Receptors as Regulators of Pituitary Corticotroph Pro-Opiomelanocortin Transcription.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis plays a critical role in adaptive stress responses and maintaining organism homeostasis. The pituitary corticotroph is the central player in the HPA axis and is regulated by a plethora of hormonal and stress related factors that synergistically interact to activate and temper pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) transcription, to either increase or decrease adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) production and secretion as needed. Nuclear receptors are a family of highly conserved transcription factors that can also be induced by various physiologic signals, an

Fusarium onychomycoses in Switzerland-A mycological and histopathological study.

Onychomycoses in temperate climates are most commonly due to dermatophytes, particularly Trichophyton rubrum. Non-dermatophyte nail infections are much less frequent, and their diagnosis requires a careful and repeated search for a potential dermatophyte that may have been overgrown in culture. A series of histological slides of suspected onychomycoses with uncommon fungal morphology prompted us to search for non-dermatophytic moulds causing dermatophytosis-like nail infections. Thirty cases were identified by culture as F solani, F oxysporum, F dimerum or F spp, and two more were only diagnos

Intracellular Invasion by Streptococcus pyogenes: Invasins, Host Receptors, and Relevance to Human Disease.

The human oral-nasal mucosa is the primary reservoir for Streptococcus pyogenes infections. Although the most common infection of consequence in temperate climates is pharyngitis, the past 25 years have witnessed a dramatic increase in invasive disease in many regions of the world. Historically, S. pyogenes has been associated with sepsis and fulminate systemic infections, but the mechanism by which these streptococci traverse mucosal or epidermal barriers is not understood. The discovery that S. pyogenes can be internalized by mammalian epithelial cells at high frequencies (1-3) and/or open t
