Hyalomma aegyptium:

Do combinations of fipronil, eugenol and carvacrol have synergistic effects against Rhipicephalus sanguineus?

The tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus is one of the main ectoparasites that affects dogs, causing direct and indirect damage to parasitized animals. Currently, infestation control is mainly carried out by using synthetic acaricidal drugs. However, a decrease in efficacy and an increase in resistance to the main therapeutic protocols against tick infestations have been increasingly reported and confirmed, a factor that has driven research into the potential acaricide activity of natural compounds, including in association with synthetic molecules. The aim of this work was to evaluate whether the co…

Rhipicephalus microplus (Acarina, Ixodidae) in Angola: evidence of its establishment and expansion.

Livestock constitutes a fundamental asset for the livelihood of rural communities in Angola. Rhipicephalus microplus (Acarina, Ixodidae) is considered to be the most important external parasite impacting the cattle industry in the world. The present work used a cross-sectional study on tick species infesting cattle in smallholder and commercial farms, to investigate the presence of R. microplus in Angola. This species was found to be recently established in certain areas of Cuanza-Sul and Benguela provinces. Furthermore, taking the current understanding of the pattern of dispersal of R. microp

Two USA Ehrlichia spp. cause febrile illness in goats.

Ehrlichia spp. are not currently recognized as a cause of illness in goats in the USA, but three Ehrlichia are enzootic in lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) in the eastern USA, and related bacteria in other countries cause illness in goats. We exposed naïve goats to Ehrlichia-infected Amblyomma and demonstrated that infection and clinical illness can be caused by two USA species, E. ewingii and the recently discovered Panola Mountain Ehrlichia sp. Clinical features in all five goats are described; ehrlichioses were associated with pyrexia, serous nasal discharge, inappetance, lethargy, de

TROSPA, an Ixodes scapularis receptor for Borrelia burgdorferi.

The Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi naturally persists in a cycle that primarily involves ticks and mammals. We have now identified a tick receptor (TROSPA) that is required for spirochetal colonization of Ixodes scapularis. B. burgdorferi outer surface protein A, which is abundantly expressed on spirochetes within the arthropod and essential for pathogen adherence to the vector, specifically bound to TROSPA. TROSPA mRNA levels in ticks increased following spirochete infestation and decreased in response to engorgement, events that are temporally linked to B. burgdorferi entry into and

Serological survey of heartwater relative to the distribution of the vector Amblyomma variegatum and other tick species in north Cameroon.

A study was carried out on the spatial and temporal distribution of Amblyomma variegatum and other ticks infesting sheep and goats in northern Cameroon. A serological survey of heartwater (cowdriosis) using a competitive ELISA was concurrently carried out in the same flocks. A. variegatum was found to be the most predominant species accounting for 48.3% of all the ticks collected. Other species identified included Rhipicephalus sulcatus, R. lunulatus, R. turanicus, Boophilus decoloratus, B. annulatus, Hyalomma nitidum and H. truncatum. Tick control was found to be necessary between June and De

Efficacy of long-acting oxytetracycline for the prevention of tick-borne fever in calves.

Twenty-six calves which had not previously grazed tick-infested pasture were divided into two equal groups. On May 26, 1988 (day 0) they were turned out into a field of rough grazing where cases of redwater fever had occurred the previous spring. Seven, 14, 21 and 28 days after the start of the trial the animals in one group each received an intramuscular injection of 20 mg/kg bodyweight of long-acting oxytetracycline. During the 60 days of the trial the animals received a severe tick-borne fever challenge, in some cases combined with a redwater fever challenge. An unforeseen complicating fact

Tick-borne pathogens from ruminant ticks in a Mediterranean ecosystem from Eastern Spain.

Vector-borne diseases represent various sicknesses that are increasingly significant in human and veterinary health. Among the zoonotic agents transmitted by ticks, infections caused by the intracellular pathogens from the Anaplasmataceae family and piroplasmids (Babesia/Theileria spp.) are particularly notable due to the substantial economic losses they cause in the livestock sector. A study was carried out to assess the prevalence of these pathogens in ticks from ruminants in the province of Valencia (Eastern Iberian Peninsula). Between 2019 and 2022, 1674 ticks were collected from 163 domes

Comparative population dynamics of a generalist (Ixodes ricinus) and specialist tick (I. hexagonus) species from European hedgehogs.

Although the population dynamics of the tick Ixodes ricinus are relatively well studied, those of other Western European tick species are largely unknown. Moreover, there is very little information related to the interactions between I. ricinus and other ticks. Such knowledge, however, is of special interest in respect to the epidemiology of tick-borne pathogens such as Borrelia spp. We compared the dynamics of the generalist I. ricinus with the nest-dwelling hedgehog specialist, I. hexagonus. Both species were collected from hedgehogs from a naturally infested experimental population between

Preventing tick attachment to dogs using essential oils.

Preventing tick bites using repellents could make a valuable contribution to an integrated tick management programme for dogs. Here, the ability of a range of essential oils or active ingredients of commercially available repellents, to abolish the orientation and taxis of the tick Ixodes ricinus towards sebum extracted from dog hair was examined in laboratory bioassays. Substantial differences between oils were observed, but turmeric oil was both able to prevent a climbing response by ticks and had a longer residual activity than other oils. A blanket-drag field assay was then used to compare

Detection of Wolbachia in the tick Ixodes ricinus is due to the presence of the hymenoptera endoparasitoid Ixodiphagus hookeri.

The identification of micro-organisms carried by ticks is an important issue for human and animal health. In addition to their role as pathogen vectors, ticks are also the hosts for symbiotic bacteria whose impact on tick biology is poorly known. Among these, the bacterium Wolbachia pipientis has already been reported associated with Ixodes ricinus and other tick species. However, the origins of Wolbachia in ticks and their consequences on tick biology (known to be very diverse in invertebrates, ranging from nutritional symbionts in nematodes to reproductive manipulators in insects) are unknow

Participatory epidemiology on major camel calf health and management problems in pastoral and semi-pastoral zones of Somali region, Ethiopia.

A cross-sectional study was conducted from May 2017 to March 2019. A participatory epidemiological appraisal was used to gain a rapid overview of the range of camel calf health problems and traditional management, a measure of the importance that people place on each of them, and to identify and prioritize economically important diseases in target zones. The most important constraints to camel production were identified to be the widespread prevalence of diseases such as camelpox, contagious ecthyma, calf scour, ticks, and nonspecific pneumonia; poor management and husbandry practices such as

[Prevalence of Ixodes ricinus infection with Borrelia burgdorferi s.l.: seasonal and annual variations].

The present study deals with the ecology of Lyme borreliosis in Northern Poland. The complexity of environmental conditions are: (1) the presence of certain rodent hosts for the Borrelia, (2) the seasonal patterns of abundance and infection rate of I. ricinus in the population of rodents and on vegetation, (3) the prevalence of B. burgdorferi s.l., B. garinii and B. afzelii. The long-term studies were carried out on a monthly basis from April to October (1998-2001) in woodlands at Urwitałt near Mikołajki on the Mazury Lakes. Two methods of spirochate detection were used: indirect immunofluores

Spatial variation in detachment rates of larval Ixodes ricinus from a common host (Apodemus sylvaticus): an experiment.

Because of their low intrinsic mobility, spatial distribution of Ixodes ticks depends strongly on movement of their hosts, but this may be modulated by the tick's decision to detach in relation to environmental cues. This aspect of host-parasite interactions may substantially contribute to micro-geographic heterogeneity in exposure risk to ticks and tick-borne pathogens, but has so far received little attention. We designed a laboratory experiment to investigate whether environmental factors may affect detachment decisions of Ixodes ricinus in two contrasting environments: a dry, bare environm

A family of serine protease inhibitors (serpins) and its expression profiles in the ovaries of Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides.

Serpins are evolutionarily conserved serine protease inhibitors found in many organisms. In arthropods, serpins are involved in feeding, development, oviposition, anti-coagulation and innate immune responses. We characterized of 11 serpins in the tick Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides. These serpins have orthologous genes in other ticks, as indicated by phylogenetic analysis. Analysis of the reactive center loop and hinge regions of the protein sequences indicated that RHS7 encodes proteins that may lack proteinase inhibitor activity. All R. haemaphysaloides serpins had high amino acid sequence i

The role of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato saliva in the dissemination of Rickettsia conorii in C3H/HeJ mice.

Animal models have been developed for the study of rickettsial pathogenesis. However, to understand what occurs during the natural route of rickettsial transmission via the tick bite, the role of tick saliva should be considered in these models. To address this, we analysed the role of tick saliva in the transmission of Rickettsia conorii (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) in a murine host by intradermally (i.d.) inoculating two groups of susceptible C3H/HeJ mice with this Rickettsia, and infesting one group with nymphal Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (Ixodida: Ixodidae) ticks.
