The molecular structure of 2,4-di-tert-butyl-eta4-1,3-diphosphacyclobutadiene tin has been determined in the gas phase by electron diffraction using both the DYNAMITE and SARACEN methods. The suitability of many different theoretical methods for the calculation of structures of half-sandwich main-group metal complexes has been investigated, and, by comparison of the results with the experimental structures, suggestions have been made as to the most suitable methods for this class of compound.

The present paper reports on the results of a specific scintigraphic examination method for diagnosing infections in cases of loosening of hip prostheses by means of labeled granulocytes. In 103 patients the result of the examination was compared with the result of the bacteriological and/or histological investigation following removal or replacement of the implant. Where there was an infectious loosening of the prosthesis the findings were in agreement with the results of the scintigraphic examination in 83.1% of the cases. Autologous leucocytes were labelled in whole blood by phagocytic uptake of 99mTc-stannous colloid. This colloid has a mean particle size of 1.5 micron and labels leucocytes with 81% efficiency. Individual cell uptakes were: granulocytes 42%, monocytes 39%. Isotonic sodium citrate added after the labelling procedure did solubilise excess colloid but was not necessary for adequate removal of excess colloid. Partial phase modification of zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS) is an effective technique for improving its light absorption capacity. In this study, a zinc hydroxystannate/zinc-tin oxide (ZHS/ZTO) heterostructure was synthesized via chemical co-precipitation followed by annealing. We report a mild and straightforward one-step chemical surface functionalization of indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes by redox-active molecules bearing an organophosphoryl anchoring group (i.e., alkyl phosphate or alkyl phosphonate group). Solid-state 29Si, 113Cd, 119Sn, and 31P MAS NMR spectra are reported on a series of II-IV-P2 compounds. In favorable cases (e.g., high degree of crystallinity, low concentration of unpaired electrons), well-defined spectra, with sharp lines for each specific nearest-neighbor configuration, are observed; in such cases, expected J coupling patterns are also seen. High-resolution solid-state NMR studies of this type provide useful information on structure (disorder), doping, and electron-mediated coupling in semiconductor systems.

Hepatic resection is essential in treating hepatocellular carcinoma. However, before an operation, it is difficult to predict the functional reserve in the remnant following massive resection. In 17 patients with suspected bleeding in the lower intestinal tract 23 scintigraphic studies were performed with Tc-colloid, followed in each case by visceral-artery angiography. Comparison of the two methods with the final clinical diagnosis indicated that angiography was correct in 6 of 23 examinations (26%), scintigraphy in 12 of 23 (52%). The quality of a number of commercial human albumin kits used at Danish hospitals for preparation of 99mTc-labelled human serum albumin has been investigated by column chromatography and HPLC. In general, the radiochemical purity was found to be low (75% or less). In some cases with a poor radiochemical purity, the main radiochemical impurity, 99mTc-labelled tin colloid, amounted to 29% or more. A 52-year-old female patient was routinely referred for an indium-111 white-cell scan due to elevated white blood cell count after mitral-valve replacement. A scan with technetium-99m tin colloid was also performed, and the resulting subtraction image showed two areas of white-cell accumulation within the spleen which were presumed to be abscesses. This was confirmed at postmortem examination.

In 35 alcoholics with histologically proven liver disease, computed tomography (CT), grey scale ultrasonography and liver scintigraphy were evaluated for their abilities to detect an abnormal liver and to identify the patients with cirrhosis. Abnormal studies were present on CT in 83% of patients, in 64% on ultrasound and in 94% on scintigraphy. In 10 control patients specificity was 90% by CT, 100% by ultrasound and 70% by scintigraphy. CT and ultrasound were poor in identifying the alcoholics with cirrhosis. Scintigraphy suggested cirrhosis in all but one of the patients with this diagnosis.

Occult intraperitoneal abscesses are difficult to locate and dispose of. Therefore, a method of examination is needed that is specific, can be used at any time, is not expensive, and yields early results within 2-3 h.
