Effectiveness of Nd:YAG Laser Fiberotomy in Clinical Crown Lengthening by Forced Eruption.

Crown lengthening by forced eruption is usually followed by conventional surgical procedures. The aim of the present study was to evaluate clinical use of Nd:YAG laser fiberotomy in crown lengthening by forced eruption as an alternative to surgery. Patients who needed crown lengthening were enrolled in this prospective case series and underwent forced eruption. Fiberotomy by Nd:YAG laser was performed 2 days after initiation of forced eruption and every 2 weeks afterward to reach optimum clinical crown length. Measurements included sulcus depth (SD), distance between the gingival margin and th

A catalogue of anomalies and traits of the primary dentition of southern Chinese.

Variation in size, form and morphology of the teeth result in anomalies such as macrodontia, microdontia, hyperdontia, hypodontia, double tooth, taurodontism and dens in dente. While traits that may occur more commonly in certain ethnic groups may be considered to be specific to that population. The characteristics of these anomalies and traits are presented along with the prevalence figures for their occurrence in primary dentition of southern Chinese.

Tooth size in dentitions with buccal canine ectopia.

Much interest has been expressed in recent years regarding various features common to dentitions with palatally displaced canines (PDC), particularly in relation to delayed dental development and reduced tooth size. The aims of the present study were to determine whether dentitions with buccally displaced canines (BDC) have features in common, which may be specific for the condition, when compared with PDC dentitions and those with normally erupting canines. Mesiodistal and buccolingual tooth dimensions were determined for 41 subjects with BDC (21 females and 20 males) aged between 11 and 15 y

Clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features of invasive cervical resorption.

Invasive cervical resorption is a relatively uncommon form of external root resorption. There may be no external signs, and the resorptive condition is often detected by routine radiographic examination. Where the lesion is visible, the clinical features vary from a small defect at the gingival margin to a pink coronal discoloration of the tooth crown resulting in ultimate cavitation of the overlying enamel. The condition is usually painless unless pulpal or periodontal infection supervenes. Radiographic features of lesions vary from well-delineated to irregularly bordered mottled radiolucenci…

Orthodontic eruption of furca-involved molars.

Guided tissue regeneration techniques, which are used in the treatment of certain advanced Class II and Class II furca-involved teeth, have progressed from promising to predictable. However, furca-modification techniques remain important aspects of treatment. Tooth eruption, combined with standard furca-modification techniques, improves the prognosis for both the treated and the adjacent teeth. Continued eruption of periodontally involved molars improves the crown-to-root ratio and maintains the periodontium of the adjacent dentition. These same concepts can be used to treat restoratively comp

Simultaneous alveolar cleft closure and dental midline correction with curvilinear intraoral distraction.

This article describes a new method that enables vector control during alveolar distraction osteogenesis in the treatment of a cleft palate patient. The patient presented with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate, and the alveolar part of the defect was covered by a mobile buccal flap. The distraction was performed by sliding the surgically released tooth segment with the help of an intraoral distractor over 1.5-mm stainless steel archwires held by metal crowns. This vector-controlled method enabled new bone and attached gingiva formation in harmony with the proper alveolar shape.

Tooth morphology, implantation and replacement system of Hoplias malabaricus (Teleostei, Characiformes, Erythrinidae).

The oropharyngeal cavity of Hoplias malabaricus, an ichthyophagous freshwater fish, is anatomically adapted to predation. Macroscopic and microscopic analyses were conducted in order to study the morphology and system of implantation and replacement of teeth. The results showed that this teleost has conical and caniniform teeth, with an orthodentin crown covered by an enameloid cap and a vascularised orthodentin in the root. With regard to the implantation system, there is a junction between the tooth and the bone tissue, as a typical physiological dental ankylosis. The teeth are replaced by a

A conservative approach in the management of inflammatory dentigerous cyst in transitional dentition: a case report.

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts that develop from the reduced enamel epithelium related to the crown of an unerupted and/or impacted tooth. Inflammatory dentigerous cyst is a variety of dentigerous cyst that is mostly found in the mixed dentition, and the treatment modalities range from enucleation to marsupialization. By extracting the infected primary teeth, opening the cyst, and ensuring continuous drainage, spontaneous eruption of the involved permanent teeth occurs into the dental arch even if they are severely dislocated. The purpose of this report is to describe the succe

Conservative management of a large dentigerous cyst in a 6-year-old girl: a case report.

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts that are associated with the crowns of permanent teeth. They are usually characterized as unilocular radiolucent lesions and are rarely seen during childhood. The purpose of this article was to report the case of a 6-year-old girl with a dentigerous cyst associated with the tooth buds of premolars. The therapeutic approach included extraction of the primary molar involved and marsupialization of the lesion. After 21 months of follow-up, spontaneous eruptions of the impacted premolars were noticed. In conclusion, marsupialization might be the first

The Twin-Rooted Anomaly: Endodontic Management of a Rare Case of a Maxillary Central Incisor With Two Roots.

This case report describes the endodontic management of a maxillary central incisor with two roots, representing a rare anatomical variation. A 73-year-old female patient presented with a fractured tooth #21 with a carious crown. Pulp sensibility testing using cold spray elicited a sharp and prolonged painful response, consistent with a diagnosis of symptomatic irreversible pulpitis with normal apical tissues. Conventional periapical radiography suggested an unusual root morphology, which was further evaluated using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). CBCT imaging revealed a bifurcated root

Computer-guided implant placement in contact with root remnants in the esthetic area.

The extraction of a tooth with root resorption can be a complicated procedure and can result in the removal of a significant amount of alveolar bone. In the anterior maxilla, esthetic rehabilitation of damaged sites with implant-supported crown could require multiple surgeries. Patients often ask for an alternative, and minimally invasive treatments are generally preferred. In this paper, a clinical case of implant-supported crown in a site affected by root resorption is described. Immediate implant was placed leaving some root fragments in the osteotomy site, thus avoiding invasive extractive

Interdisciplinary rehabilitation of a root-fractured maxillary central incisor: A 12-year follow-up case report.

Single-tooth implantation has become a common treatment solution for replacement of a root-fractured maxillary incisor in adults, but the long-term esthetic results can be unfavorable due to progressive marginal bone loss, resulting in gingival recession. In this case report, a maxillary central incisor with a root fracture in its apical one-third was orthodontically extruded and extracted in a 21-year-old female. Implant surgery was performed after a 3-month healing period, and the final crown was placed about 12 months after extraction. After 12 years, favorable osseous and gingival architec

Management of preeruptive intracoronal radiolucency (PEIR): a case series with up to 8 years follow-up.

Preeruptive intracoronal radiolucency (PEIR) is a rare dental anomaly often incidentally detected during routine radiographic examinations. This condition manifests as a radiolucent lesion beneath the enamel-dentin junction of unerupted teeth, particularly in mandibular molars, posing diagnostic and management challenges due to its asymptomatic nature. The treatment of PEIR depends on the extent of the lesion and the degree of pulp involvement. Case series: This case series reports on four patients with progressive PEIR. In Cases 1 and 2, lesions were incidentally discovered in panoramic radio

Combined nonsurgical and implant restoration after dental trauma: a case report.

Dentoalveolar trauma is an important etiologic factor for tooth loss. A multidisciplinary approach to treatment is necessary because the functional, esthetic, and psychosocial problems that result from dentoalveolar trauma can significantly influence the patient's quality of life. The objective of this article is to describe the multidisciplinary treatment of a 39-year-old man who experienced dentoalveolar trauma in a bicycle accident. Clinical and tomographic examinations revealed the avulsion of the maxillary left central incisor as well as coronal fractures of the other incisors and the max

Alopecia areata of dental origin in a child.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that involves the hair follicle. Current evidence indicates that hair follicle inflammation in AA is caused by a T-cell-mediated autoimmune mechanism occurring in genetically predisposed individuals. AA has a reported incidence of 0.1%-0.2%, with a lifetime risk of 1.7%. It has also been found that AA accounts for roughly 2% of new dermatology outpatient cases in the US and the UK, 3.8% of cases in China and 6.7% of cases in Kuwait. Pediatric AA constitutes approximately 20% of all AA cases. AA affects males and females equally. The most c

Esthetic crown lengthening: appropriate diagnosis for achieving gingival balance.

A gummy smile poses a restorative challenge for dentists attempting to achieve ideal esthetics. Many have advocated the use of a gingivectomy or laser-assisted gingival contouring procedure. However, this simplistic approach can potentially create a mucogingival defect or a biological width violation. To avoid these periodontal-restorative complications, it is important during treatment planning to assess the anatomical relationship that resulted in the gummy smile and choose the appropriate surgical treatment to eliminate this condition.

Talon cusp: an overview with case reports of 3 clinical variants.

Talon cusp is a dental anomaly, which is present as an accessory cusp and is seen both in the deciduous and permanent dentition. It may occur unilaterally or bilaterally and has been reported mostly in maxillary teeth, with a few cases occurring in the mandible. Talon cusp is usually asymptomatic; however, there are many clinical problems associated with it. Talon cusp is clinically manifested in three forms: talon, semi-talon and trace talon. In this article, we present four case reports of talon cusp with an overview of different clinical variants of talon cusp, classification, etiopathogene

Clinical problems associated with unusual cases of talon cusp.

Talon cusp is an uncommon dental anomaly manifested as an accessory cusp-like structure on the crown of anterior teeth. This report describes two unusual cases of talon cusp. Case 1 showed bilateral anomalous cusps on the palatal aspects of maxillary supernumerary teeth, causing premature contact and tooth impaction. In case 2, a double-fused talon cusp was projected from the palatal surface of a large geminated central incisor. A talon cusp is not an innocuous defect, as it may provide a substantial diagnostic, treatment planning and procedural challenge. Early diagnosis and management are im
