OBJECTIVE: Ortho cubic super-high resolution computed tomography (Ortho-CT), which we have developed, is characterized by the small size of the unit and the ability to produce 3-dimensional images of high resolution with low-radiation doses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical usefulness of Ortho-CT for the diagnosis of diseases in the oral and maxillofacial region.
STUDY DESIGN: Ortho-CT has been used for the imaging diagnosis of a radicular cyst of the upper first molar, mesiodense, tooth fractures in the upper anterior region, a fracture of the condylar process, or pr

The improvements in human health and increased life expectancy which have come about in many societies in the past century have been due, predominantly, to improvements in hygiene--both personal and environmental. As the common oral diseases--caries and gingivitis and to some extent periodontitis--are bacterially mediated diseases, they are also amendable to control by oral hygiene. As commonly practised however, with modern diets, mechanical oral hygiene alone has limited effect on disease incidence. The supplementation of tooth brushing with chemical agents which modulate plaque metabolism a

Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic infectious diseases, mainly due to acid production by bacteria in the plaque biofilm, leading to enamel demineralization, tooth defects and pulpitis. Most of the current treatments are invasive and do not combine restoration of dental tissues, resolution of tooth staining or prevention of dental caries. In this study, a polydopamine (PDA)-encapsulated strontium-doped zinc oxide composite (Sr-ZnO@PDA, denoted as SZ@PDA) has been developed for caries prevention and remineralization. The PDA wrapping endows SZ@PDA with a narrow energy band gap (1

Marginal and periapical periodontal diseases cause massive destruction of tooth tissues and surrounding tissues, such as alveolar bone and maxillary sinus floor, visible on radiographs. Lesions involving the apical and marginal periodontium are endo-perio (EPL) lesions. This study aimed to compare the treatment efficacy of endo-perio lesions using a standard treatment protocol and a standard diode laser-assisted treatment protocol. The 12 patients were divided into the study (a) and control (b) group. Periodontal indices, tooth vitality and mobility, occlusal status, and radiographic diagnosis

Primary cilia, with highly regulated cellular sensory functions, play key roles in tissue development and function maintenance. Intraflagellar transport 140 (IFT140) is a subunit of IFT complex A, which is specialized for retrograde transportation in cilia. Mutations of Ift140 are usually associated with syndromic ciliopathy and may cause isolated diseases such as retinal dystrophy, short ribs, and polycystic kidney. However, the role of IFT140 in tooth development has not been well investigated. In this study, a close relationship between IFT140 and dentin formation is disclosed. During tooth

Fixed vestibular appliances decrease the "self-cleansing" action of saliva and promote aggregation of dental plaque by disturbing the salivary flow field on tooth surfaces, leading to a higher prevalence of enamel demineralization and periodontal diseases. In the current study, we investigated the salivary dynamic characteristics of plaque retention and periodontal status around appliances during orthodontic treatment. By reconstructing lower central incisors and orthodontic appliances, we simulated saliva flow on the tooth surface and then characterized and quantified the salivary flow patter

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have a complex etiology determined by risk factors, which are in turn associated to a strong genetic component and to environmental factors. In the biological background for the development of CVD, low-grade chronic inflammation plays a role as a pathogenetic determinant of atherosclerosis. Dental infections have been associated with CVD. Periodontal disease is a chronic infection of the supporting tissues of the tooth that can lead to teeth loss. In recent years, a number of reports have demonstrated the possible relationship between periodontal disease and CVD.

The ancestor of recent vertebrate teeth was a tooth-like structure on the outer body surface of jawless fishes. Over the course of 500,000,000 years of evolution, many of those structures migrated into the mouth cavity. In addition, the total number of teeth per dentition generally decreased and teeth morphological complexity increased. Teeth form mainly on the jaws within the mouth cavity through mutual, delicate interactions between dental epithelium and oral ectomesenchyme. These interactions involve spatially restricted expression of several, teeth-related genes and the secretion of variou

Dental caries is one of the most prevalent diseases of man and is the major cause of tooth mortality in the young. Although the precise aetiology of the disease is unknown, scientific evidence incriminates the interaction of three factors, viz. diet, plaque and the tooth. Several studies demonstrate a positive correlation between patterns of sugar consumption and caries experience. In contrast other studies showed no such association. This study investigated the frequency of sugar consumption habits, the mother's knowledge of oral hygiene as well as the oral hygiene methods she applies to her

Eight hundred forty-nine Japanese dentists were asked to record the reason for every tooth extraction of permanent teeth during 1 week in each of four seasons. The reasons were assigned to six groups: dental caries, periodontal disease, eruption problems, trauma, orthodontics and other reasons. Thirty-eight to 40% of the dentists returned the forms in each season, relating to a total of 11,175 extracted teeth. Overall, caries was the most frequent reason for tooth extraction (55.4%), followed by periodontal disease (38.0%). The females lost more teeth due to caries than did the males. In the >

Epidemiological studies in the sixties indicated that in patients older than 45 years periodontal disease was the major cause of tooth-loss, particularly in molars. However, improved prevention and enhanced dental awareness have now reduced both the incidence of periodontal disease and tooth-loss. Unfortunately, periodontal disease and tooth-loss still progress rapidly in a small group of patients. The currently used diagnostic parameters do not allow the early identification of this small group. Despite controlled periodontal treatment, loss of molars has remained twice as high as overall too

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Various causes of tooth loss such as caries, trauma, periodontal diseases, and cancer have been documented in the literature. In addition, factors that can modify these causes such as level of education, age and sex have been studied. There is however paucity of information on whether patients or people with missing teeth are aware of the side effects of tooth loss on them or on the remaining teeth. This study investigated the knowledge of consequences of missing teeth among partially edentulous patients in a teaching hospital.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Self-administered

Poor oral health and tooth loss have been proposed as possible risk factors for some chronic diseases, including gastric cancer. However, a small number of studies have tested these associations. We conducted a case-control study in Golestan Province, Iran, that enrolled 309 cases diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma (118 noncardia, 161 cardia, and 30 mixed-locations) and 613 sex, age, and neighborhood matched controls. Data on oral health were obtained through physical examination and questionnaire including tooth loss, the number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth, and frequency of tooth

Tooth agenesis constitutes one of the most common developmental anomalies in man. Oligodontia is defined as congenital absence of six or more teeth. Based on the studies of our team in cooperation with Peking University Center for Human Disease Genomics in the past five years, this article reviews the current research progress in clinical phenotypes and case collection, epidemiological investigation and etiological genetic studies of oligodontia. The symptoms of oligodontia were classified into syndromic and non-syndromic according to the occurrence of tooth agenesis with or without systemic d

Periodontal diseases are multifactorial chronic inflammatory disorders characterised by progressive destruction of the tooth-supporting apparatus. Predicting the evolution of these diseases remains a significant clinical challenge because microbial, host, behavioral, and systemic determinants interact to produce substantial inter-individual variability. In recent decades, periodontal care has transitioned from a reactive model toward a preventive, risk-oriented approach supported by structured prediction systems. Various clinical risk assessment tools, including the hexagonal periodontal risk

Joubert syndrome (JS) is a recessive disorder that is characterized by midbrain-hindbrain malformation and shows the "molar tooth sign" on magnetic resonance imaging. Mutations in 40 genes, including Abelson helper integration site 1 (AHI1), inositol polyphosphate-5-phosphatase (INPP5E), coiled-coil and c2 domain-containing protein 2A (CC2D2A), and ARL2-like protein 1 (ARL13B), can cause JS. Classic JS is a part of a group of diseases associated with JS, and its manifestations include various neurological signs such as skeletal abnormalities, ocular coloboma, renal disease, and hepatic fibrosi

With global increases in the aging population, the number of patients with dementia is greatly increasing, which has become a big social problem. Many studies have shown strong associations between oral disorders and systemic disorders, such as diabetes, arthritis, sepsis, aspiration pneumonia, arteriosclerosis, bacterial endocarditis, and other cardiovascular diseases. Similarly, numerous cross-sectional studies showed that patients with dementia usually have poor oral conditions and tooth loss. These have long been considered as a result of difficulty with oral care due to impaired cognitive
