OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the clinical and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) characteristics of root fractures in endodontically versus nonendodontically treated posterior teeth.
METHODS: A total of 340 posterior teeth from 305 patients were retrospectively collected. The fractured teeth were divided into endodontically treated (ET) teeth and nonendodontically treated (NET) teeth. The clinical information (age and gender of patients) was recorded. The type of fractured tooth, fractured root, orientation of fracture lines (vertical, horizontal, oblique, and irregular), dir

Dens evaginatus is a developmental anomaly that produces a tubercle on the occlusal surface of a tooth. It is found most frequently in the mandibular premolars. The occlusal tubercle easily causes occlusal interferences. Attrition or fracture of the tubercle can lead to pulpitis, pulp necrosis, periapical pathosis, and periapical infection. This case report illustrates the treatment of facial cellulitis arising from dens evaginatus with open apex. Calcium hydroxide was used for the apexification procedure. One year after canal obturation, radiography revealed no apical pathosis and the apical

Morbidity and mortality among children is usually the result of trauma. Because a child's face is retruded relative to the protecting skull, has a thicker layer of adipose tissue, more elastic bones, flexible sutures lines, the presence of tooth buds within the jaws, and the lack of pneumatisation of the sinuses, the facial bones fracture less commonly than in adults. Our aim was to assess the patterns of such fractures in children who presented to the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, King Edward Medical University/Mayo Hospital Lahore, Pakistan. All 535 eligible children between

This study presents 2 cases of elderly edentulous patients with infected, impacted mandibular third molars in severely atrophic mandibles. Both cases were managed surgically with tooth extraction and prophylactic internal fixation to prevent pathologic fracture. The first case involved a 62-year-old woman with a class III atrophic mandible and chronic infection. Surgical treatment included intraoral drainage, odontossection, extraction, and placement of a 2.4 mm osteosynthesis plate aided by a stereolithographic model. The second case, a 70-year-old woman with facial cellulitis, was treated in

Adhesive resin and composite resin were used to restore the central incisors in a 21-year-old woman at an emergency treatment. Two maxillary fractured incisors were restored (one after endodontic treatment) and reexamined over a period of 24 months (Fig 5). Some slight yellowing has been noted in the endodontically treated tooth, but it has not appreciably affected appearance. The patient did not object to the discoloration and no replacements or additions were done. The restorations showed no indications of excessive wear or physical damage during the examination period.

The technique described in this study demonstrates that the use of orthodontic extrusion can provide an alternative to extraction and extensive periodontal surgery. Selection of patients is an important aspect when considering this type of treatment. The crown-root ratio, as well as the root anatomy, if inadequate, may render this type of treatment inappropriate. The concept of a biologic width is discussed, and its application to forced eruption is described.

Not many case reports of suspected child abuse as assessed solely on skeletal remains are available. Forensic anthropologists have intimate knowledge of normal skeletal anatomy, bone trauma and processes of healing of bone and may therefore be of help in suspected cases of child abuse. Patterns of trauma in juvenile skeletal remains which are suggestive of abuse include fractures in different phases of healing, multiple fractures, typical fractures on ribs and long bones and severe, complicated cranial fractures. The aim of this paper is to report on the findings of the analysis of the skeleta

Limited data exists on the effect of treatment delay of multiple myeloma (MM) bone disease on the disease course. In this real-world analysis of 625 patients with newly diagnosed MM (NDMM) we aimed to investigate the impact of delay in starting bone disease treatment on later skeletal events and outcome. Altogether 480 (76.8 %) patients had bone disease at the diagnosis, 282 (45.1 %) patients had a fracture at diagnosis, and 181 (29.1 %) patients had a later fracture during the follow-up. A delay in the initiation of treatment of bone disease was experienced by 221 (35.4 %) patients and tooth

INTRODUCTION: Different materials and restorative concepts have been proposed over the years to restore endodontically treated teeth (ETT). Monolithic ceramic and composite restoration can be lute to the tooh, without the use of a post. However, little is known how the material stiffness and presence of a composite core will affect the survival and failure mode. The objective of this in-vitro study was to evaluate the fracture strength and failure mode of endodontically treated molars, restored with ceramic or hybrid composite monolithic restoration, in the presence of absence of a composite c

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), is a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders of connective tissue characterized by bone fragility. Patients with this disease frequently suffer fractures, over 80% of the extremities due to the more intensive mechanical load. Fractures of the facial bones occur very infrequently. Several studies have proved that bisphosphonate therapy may be effective in reducing fracture risk in OI patients. We report here an unusual case of pathological mandibular fracture following simple molar extraction in an adult patient with OI type I and oral alendronic acid treatment.

UNLABELLED: Fractures of the facial bones are common and, in the West, usually occur as a result of interpersonal violence. Patients may attend dentists in the first instance as derangement of occlusion and other oral symptoms are common.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: As patients with facial bone fractures may attend their dentist in the first instance, dentists should be confident in recognizing the signs and symptoms of facial fractures.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular molars using traditional and conservative access cavity preparation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this in vitro study, 100 extracted healthy human mandibular molars were selected and divided into 10 groups (n = 10). Healthy teeth in one group were considered the control group. In three groups, traditional access cavity preparation was done (groups A) without two marginal ridges (A1), with one marginal ridge (A2), and with two marginal ridges (A3). In three groups (group B), two separa

OBJECTIVES: This laboratory study evaluated the effect of deep margin elevation (DME) on the marginal integrity and fracture resistance of anterior teeth with crown-root fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-two extracted permanent human maxillary central incisors were randomly divided into four groups. All teeth received a standardized simulated crown-root fracture, selective enamel etching followed by universal adhesive application, resin-based composite (RBC) build-up (conventional or bulk-fill), root canal treatment, and glass fiber post placement. Crown preparations were performed eithe

Horizontal root fractures are relatively rare dental findings and often pose diagnostic and treatment challenges. In addition to a horizontal root fracture, this case report also demonstrates a finding of a noncarious cervical abfraction lesion, which involves the loss of dental hard tissue from the cervical areas of teeth through processes unrelated to caries. A 22 -year-old healthy female patient was complaining of the maxillary left first premolar area with a history of dental trauma. Clinically, the tooth presented with a noncarious cervical abfraction lesion. Endodontic testing showed a n

Atrophic jaws are frequently seen in edentulous patients due to early tooth loss, leading to progressive alveolar bone resorption, bone fragility, and increased susceptibility to fractures, even with low-energy trauma. Surgical management of these fractures presents additional challenges, such as reduced bone density, fragment instability, reduced blood flow, and lack of natural occlusal support. With advances in implant-supported rehabilitation, new perspectives have emerged, but risks remain, especially in areas with severe resorption. Iatrogenic fractures can occur during implant placement

PURPOSE: The aim of the present retrospective study was to investigate the morbidity of screws used for intermaxillary fixation (IMF) in the treatment of mandibular fractures. A review of the published data was also performed for a comparison of outcomes. Our hypothesis was that the use of screws for IMF of mandibular fractures would result in minimal morbidity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients treated for mandibular fractures from 2007 to 2013, using screws for IMF, using the international diagnosis code for mandibular fracture, DS026, were anonymously selected (Department of Oral and Maxillo
