Pulp pathosis in inlayed teeth of the ancient Mayas: a microcomputed tomography study.

AIM: To evaluate three-dimensionally, using microcomputed tomography (μCT), the anatomical relationship between the cavity prepared to hold the inlay stone and the pulp chamber in the teeth of the ancient Maya. METHODOLOGY: Six well-preserved teeth from Maya corpses found in an archaeological site in Guatemala (approximately 1600 year old) were selected and scanned using a high-resolution μCT system (SkyScan 1174v2; SkyScan N.V., Kontich, Belgium). The sample comprised six maxillary teeth: two canines, one premolar, two central incisors and one lateral incisor. All teeth had one or two inlay

Anticipated and experienced pain associated with endodontic therapy.

BACKGROUND: The authors compared the levels of anticipated and experienced pain of patients who received endodontic therapy, or ET, with selected patient and dental characteristics. METHODS: Sensory and affective pain outcome measures (pain and unpleasantness) were evaluated by 333 adult patients immediately before and after dental school faculty or residents performed ET. Dentists provided clinical evaluations and a pulpal diagnosis for each tooth and then rated the level of their patients' pain during treatment. RESULTS: Before ET, 43 percent of all patients anticipated high outcome levels

A clinical and histological evaluation of titanium mini-implants as anchors for orthodontic intrusion in the beagle dog.

The aim of this study was to determine the anchorage potential of the titanium mini-implant for orthodontic intrusion of the mandibular posterior teeth. Six mini-implants were surgically placed around the mandibular third premolars on each side in 3 adult male beagle dogs. On the buccal site, three mini-implants were placed distal to the apex of the distal root of the third premolar, at the interradicular septa of the third premolar, and mesial to the apex of the mesial root of the third premolar, as linearly as possible. The same procedure was performed at the lingual site on both sides of th

Influence of preheating resin composites: a nano-CT assessment on voids and internal adaptation.

Gap percentage at the restoration-tooth interface and internal voids remain significant limitations in resin-based composite restorations, contributing to marginal leakage, secondary caries, and restoration failure. Preheating composite resins has been proposed as a strategy to enhance adaptation and reduce polymerization-induced stress. To evaluate the influence of preheating resin composites and varying light-curing durations on gap percentage at the restoration-tooth interface, internal adaptation, and void formation in Class II restorations using high-resolution Nano-CT imaging. Evaluation of nanohardness, elastic modulus, and surface roughness of fluoride-releasing tooth colored restorative materials.

Recently, interest in tooth-colored fluoride-releasing dental materials has increased. Although physical and mechanical properties such as surface hardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness of the restorative materials have been investigated, the effect of different immersion media on these properties is still controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nanohardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness of the fluoride release of tooth-colored restorative materials after immersion in acidic beverages. Prepared samples of three restorative materials (a highly viscous glass io

Biomimetic Tooth Repair: Amelogenin-Derived Peptide Enables in Vitro Remineralization of Human Enamel.

White spot lesions (WSL) and incipient caries on enamel surfaces are the earliest clinical outcomes for demineralization and caries. If left untreated, the caries can progress and may cause complex restorative procedures or even tooth extraction which destroys soft and hard tissue architecture as a consequence of connective tissue and bone loss. Current clinical practices are insufficient in treating dental caries. A long-standing practical challenge associated with demineralization related to dental diseases is incorporating a functional mineral microlayer which is fully integrated into the m

Survival Analysis of Prefabricated Zirconia Crowns with and Without Pulpotomy in Primary Teeth: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Prefabricated Zirconia Crowns (PZCs) are increasingly preferred for restoring primary teeth due to their esthetic appeal and retention. However, their rigid, unmodifiable design requires precise tooth preparation, often leading to aggressive reduction and potential pulp exposure. Pulpotomy, a standard treatment for reversible pulpitis and mechanical pulp exposure, is sometimes employed before PZCs. While pulpotomy is not routinely performed, its use raises important considerations about the interplay between restorative procedures and pulp therapy in pediatric dentistry, particular…
