Behavioral validation of novel high resolution attention decoding method from multi-units & local field potentials.

The ability to access brain information in real-time is crucial both for a better understanding of cognitive functions and for the development of therapeutic applications based on brain-machine interfaces. Great success has been achieved in the field of neural motor prosthesis. Progress is still needed in the real-time decoding of higher-order cognitive processes such as covert attention. Recently, we showed that we can track the location of the attentional spotlight using classification methods applied to prefrontal multi-unit activity (MUA) in the non-human primates. Importantly, we demonstr

Dynamic Fracture Monitoring Technique in Deep Coal Seams Based on a Time-Varying Electric Field Method.

The efficient development of deep coalbed methane (CBM) is constrained by unclear hydraulic fracture propagation mechanisms and the limited resolution of existing monitoring techniques. Conventional methods such as microseismic monitoring and static resistivity imaging are unable to provide real-time, high-resolution characterization of dynamic fracture growth and fluid migration, thereby impeding accurate evaluation of stimulation effectiveness. To address these limitations, this study introduces a novel dynamic fracture monitoring technique based on a time-varying electric field method. By e

Augmented Reality Navigation for Pedicle Screw Fixation: Technical Accuracy and Feasibility in a Human Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Pedicle screw fixation is the gold standard for spinal stabilization, but accurate placement remains challenging. Conventional navigation systems have limitations including workflow disruption and divided attention between the surgical field and external monitors. This study evaluates the feasibility and accuracy of a novel augmented reality navigation for pedicle screw fixation (ARNF) system in human cadaveric specimens. METHODS: Two human cadaveric specimens were used for placement of 18 pedicle screws (10 in cadaver 1, 8 in cadaver 2) across thoracolumbar vertebrae (T12-L4). A

Standardized metadata for human pathogen/vector genomic sequences.

High throughput sequencing has accelerated the determination of genome sequences for thousands of human infectious disease pathogens and dozens of their vectors. The scale and scope of these data are enabling genotype-phenotype association studies to identify genetic determinants of pathogen virulence and drug/insecticide resistance, and phylogenetic studies to track the origin and spread of disease outbreaks. To maximize the utility of genomic sequences for these purposes, it is essential that metadata about the pathogen/vector isolate characteristics be collected and made available in organi

Physics-Guided Gaussian Process Mapping of Strong-Gradient Radiation Fields from Mobile Robot Surveys: The Role of Sampling Geometry.

Radiation fields around collimated or shielded sources exhibit strong gradients whose accurate delineation is critical for worker protection and emergency response. Mobile robots can survey such fields, but they sample sparsely and irregularly along their trajectories, and it remains unclear which reconstruction method can be trusted, and where. Using a single dominant collimated source in a two-dimensional indoor setting, this study shows that the answer depends decisively on sampling geometry, and proposes a physics-guided Gaussian process (GP) that performs reliably under trajectory-constra

Spatial and longitudinal monitoring of cartilage and intervertebral disc extracellular matrix formation using proteoglycan building blocks and click chemistry: specificity, quantification, and detection upon subcutaneous implantation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The development of regenerative therapies for osteoarthritis and intervertebral disc degeneration requires non-destructive methods to spatiotemporally monitor extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis. This study aimed to establish a method for the use of bioorthogonal click chemistry for longitudinal and spatially resolved tracking of newly synthesized proteoglycans in cartilaginous tissues, including tools to assess specificity, enable quantification and for future application for noninvasive real-time tracking of ECM production by imaging. A Modular Approach to Light Capture and Synthetic Tuning of the Excited-State Properties of Fe(II)-Based Chromophores.

The development of chromophores based on earth-abundant transition metals whose photophysical properties are dominated by their charge-transfer excited states has inspired considerable research over the past decade. One challenge associated with this effort is satisfying the dual requirements of a strong ligand field and chemical tunability of the compound's absorptive cross-section. Herein we explore one possible approach using a heteroleptic compositional motif that combines both of these attributes into a single compound. With the parent complex [Fe(phen)3]2+ (1; where phen is 1,10-phenanth

Emergent Gauge Fields and Linear Dichroism in Spin-Textured Altermagnets.

Spin textures are ubiquitous in antiferromagnets, yet their consequences for altermagnets remain largely unexplored. We show that smooth spatial variations of the Néel order act on itinerant electrons as emergent gauge fields that couple to the altermagnetic sublattice-odd channel. For a coplanar spin helix, this channel generates two responses that vanish when it is removed: a momentum-resolved sublattice-odd spectral structure and a net interband linear dichroism whose principal axes are controlled by the helix wave vector, so the optical response can be steered by the magnetic texture. The

Hippocampal mechanisms underlying the resolution of competition in memory and perception.

Behaving adaptively requires selection of relevant memories and sensations and suppression of competing ones. We hypothesize that these mechanisms are linked, such that hippocampal computations that resolve competition in memory also shape the precision of sensory representations to guide selective attention. We leverage fMRI-based pattern similarity, receptive field modeling, and eye tracking to test this hypothesis in humans performing a memory-dependent visual search task. In the hippocampus, more distinct representations of competing memories are associated with the accuracy of memory-guid

An Ultrathin, Permeable, and Battery-Free Monolithically Integrated System for Emotion Sensing and Interaction.

Emotion regulation is critical for mental and physical health. Biomarkers such as dopamine and cortisol in body fluids are relevant to emotional status, while there is a lack of feasible devices to achieve personalized emotion management with minimized interferences. This study presents an ultrathin and battery-free monolithically integrated sensing system for wireless tracking of stress-related biomarkers with human-machine interaction. The system can be printed on a flexible and porous thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) membrane with a thickness of around 36 µm, exhibiting remarkable air/moist

Nanosecond, Nanometer Movies of MEMS/NEMS Dynamics in a Standard SEM Using Time-Tagged Secondary Electrons.

Dynamic phenomena at the micro- and nanoscale underpin technologies ranging from micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) actuators and sensors to quantum instrumentation and communication hardware. In this paper, we demonstrate that time-resolved full-field scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for periodically driven micro- and nanostructures offers access to their spatiotemporal dynamics. This is achieved using a conventional SEM operated with its continuous electron beam and combined with a multi-channel plate (MCP) with a time-to-digital converter (TDC) for time-resolved measurem

Study on VDT fatigue detection for complex industrial control room operators based on multi-modal fusion.

In complex industrial control rooms such as nuclear power plants and coal mines, Visual Display Terminal (VDT) fatigue caused by sustained monitoring is a key factor contributing to human error. Therefore, VDT fatigue detection technology is of critical importance. This study evaluated fatigue states by analysing subjective and objective physiological data collected from 16 operators before and after shifts, including electroencephalogram and eye-tracking signals. Paired-sample statistical tests confirmed significant changes in fatigue-related indicators. Based on small-sample data, a TabNet-b

An implanted lennula approach to measure neural Ca2+ responses in the awake marmoset visual cortex.

We present a novel approach for endoscopic calcium imaging in the marmoset extrastriate visual cortex, combining a chronically implanted microprism lens with an integrated injection cannula. This method achieved stable, longitudinal imaging of visually responsive GCaMP-expressing neurons over multiple weeks. Using a head-mounted miniscope in two subjects, we repeatedly presented naturalistic visual stimuli and longitudinally tracked the activity of more than one hundred neurons across sessions within an 800-μm2 field of view. Stably monitored neurons in cortical areas V3 and MT responded relia

3D Organ Motion Estimation for Radiotherapy through Material Point Method-Driven Extrapolation of Multiple Orthogonal Slices.

This study proposes a novel method for estimating three-dimensional organ motion during radiotherapy using real-time MRI data. The approach combines observations from axial, coronal, and sagittal cross-sectional images with vertical extrapolation and a material point method simulation to generate comprehensive three-dimensional displacement fields. Unlike existing methods that rely primarily on geometric deformation within observed slices, our method assists estimation of motion in all directions, including regions far from the observed planes. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was va

Real time machine learning prediction of next generation sequencing test results in live clinical settings.

Next-generation sequencing-based tests have advanced the field of medical diagnostics, but their novelty and cost can lead to uncertainty in clinical deployment. The Heme-STAMP is one such assay that tracks mutations in genes implicated in hematolymphoid neoplasms. Rather than limiting its clinical usage or imposing rule-based criteria, we propose leveraging machine learning to guide clinical decision-making on whether this test should be ordered. We trained a machine learning model to predict the outcome of Heme-STAMP testing using 3472 orders placed between May 2018 and September 2021 from a

Dynamic gene regulatory network inference from single-cell data using optimal transport.

MOTIVATION: Modelling gene expression is a central problem in systems biology. Single-cell technologies have revolutionized the field by enabling sequencing at the resolution of individual cells. This results in a much richer data compared to what is obtained by bulk technologies, offering new possibilities and challenges for gene regulatory network inference. RESULTS: In this work, we introduce GRIT (gene regulation inference by transport)-a method to fit a differential equation model and to infer gene regulatory networks from single-cell data using the theory of optimal transport. The idea

Evolving strategies in the diagnosis and treatment of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders.

Despite significant progress in managing HIV infection, HIV - associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) continues to be a concern even among HIV individuals with well - controlled infection. Current diagnostic strategies, primarily reliant on neuropsychological tests, neuroimaging, and biomarkers from blood and cerebrospinal fluid, alongside combination antiretroviral therapy, form the foundation of HAND management. However, these strategies often fail to identify early or mild HAND, particularly asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment, resulting in delayed diagnosis and intervention. Furthermo

The native liver as inspiration to create superior in vitro hepatic models.

Drug induced liver injury (DILI) is one of the major reasons of drug withdrawal during the different phases of drug development. The later in the drug development a drug is discovered to be toxic, the higher the economical as well as the ethical impact will be. In vitro models for early detection of drug liver toxicity are under constant development, however to date a superior model of the liver is still lacking. Ideally, a highly reliable model should be established to maintain the different hepatic cell functionalities to the greatest extent possible, during a period of time long enough to a
