Hepatic dysfunction is a common metabolic complication of parenteral nutrition in both the pediatric and adult age groups. In infants, elevation of the serum direct bilirubin reflects intrahepatic cholestasis. In the adult lesion, elevation of alkaline phosphatase and transaminases reflect fatty infiltration. Although the causes are unknown, they are probably multifactorial and involve imbalances of administered nutrients. Hepatic dysfunction is nearly always self-limited and resolves following cessation of parenteral nutrition. Further research into assessment of exact nutrient requirements a…

The clinical picture of Reye's syndrome, characterized by an acute severe disease of brain and liver, initially has nonspecific generalized symptoms with cough, myalgia, and fever. The prognosis is poor. The disease starts with an infection, quickly followed by vomiting and loss of consciousness. In this phase the serum bilirubin is moderately raised, the transaminases markedly so. In addition to gastro-intestinal bleeding there may be hypoventilation, hypoglycaemia and seizures. Morbid anatomically there is a small-drop fatty infiltration of the liver and other organs with cerebral oedema. Ae…

Hepatic function was studied in experiments on 16 dogs after massive transfusion of red cell pack to ascertain the blood components influencing this function most. Massive transfusion of red cell pack failed to induce any significant changes in the excretory-absorbing protein forming function, and also in the content of transaminases. Hepatic function was markedly disturbed in a control group given massive transfusions of whole homologous blood. Results of investigations support the suggestion that one of the causes of hepatic function disturbances in "the syndrome of massive blood transfusion…

Sequential biochemical investigations were conducted in cases of lepromatous leprosy in the reactive as well as subsided phases. Low levels of blood sugar and serum cholesterol were indicated in the reactive phase of lepromatous leprosy. Significant increase in thymol turbidity and decrease in A/G ratio were noted in most of the cases of lepromatous leprosy. Enhancement of serum levels of transaminases was observed in the reactive phase of lepromatous leprosy. Serum protein electrophoresis indicated increases in alpha2--globulin and r--globulin and decrease in albumin in the reactive as well a…

The complex biologic investigation of thyphoid fever is dictated by the necessity of instituting a pathogenetic therapy, especially in the toxic and complex forms. Performing 178 fuctional-metabolic tests in 50 cases of typhoid fever (of which 10 severe and complicated forms), the authors established the prognostic value energy deficiency (approximately P), lactate, alkaline reserve and GPT. Azotemia is only characteristic in the forms with renal involvement, and the other transaminases may be positive even whe the liver is not enlarged. In one case of repeated digestive hemorrhage no evidence…

Dengue infection may lead to liver involvement ranging from mild transaminase elevation to severe hepatitis and, rarely, acute liver failure. Management is mainly supportive, and no specific therapy exists. We report the case of a 13-year-old adolescent with dengue with warning signs who developed severe hepatitis (aspartate aminotransferase (AST) 2034 U/L, alanine transaminase (ALT) 532 U/L) and thrombocytopenia. Oral N-acetylcysteine (NAC) was initiated as adjuvant therapy. During hospitalisation, a reduction in aminotransferase levels, clinical improvement, and recovery of platelet count we

Neurological symptoms resulting from selenium(Se) exposure significantly impact the health and conservation of Przewalski's gazelle. In this study, we performed proteomic and metabolomic analyses of the liver in Przewalski's gazelle for the first time, aiming to reveal the hepatic metabolic mechanisms underlying the neurological symptoms caused by Se exposure. We identified 89 differentially expressed proteins and 30 metabolites with altered regulation. Using multi-omics integrated analysis, we identified a neurofunctional regulation network composed of three metabolic pathways, with (S)-3-ami

We report a case of a 19-year-old male with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) diagnosed at age 2 years, childhood growth retardation, and multiple admissions for diabetic ketoacidosis, presenting with hepatomegaly and elevated liver transaminase. His hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was 13.1% (reference range, < 5.7%). Massive hepatomegaly without splenomegaly was noted and accompanied by significant liver enzyme derangement, and lactatemia. Extensive viral, serologic, genetic, and metabolic tests to identify the etiology of hepatomegaly were unrevealing. A liver biopsy showed microvesicular and macrovesi

Immune checkpoint molecules (ICM) are critical in maintaining immunologic homeostasis and participate in preventing or promoting autoimmune disease development. Exploring a large panel of intrahepatic inhibitory and stimulatory ICM is necessary for drawing a general picture of the immune alterations in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Here, we performed a multiparametric analysis of ICM, including PD-1, TIM3, LAG3, CTLA-4, OX40 and 4-1BB, and we determined their expression on intrahepatic lymphocyte subsets in untreated and in treated patients with AIH in comparison to normal liver tissue. AIH pati

This study investigated the protective effects of ethyl pyruvate (EP) against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute hepatic injury in rats. The administration of a single dose of CCl4 (1.6 g/kg body weight) significantly elevated the levels of malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides. In addition, CCl4 was found to significantly suppress the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. All of these parameters were restored to their nor

Sarcoidosis is a systemic, noncaseating granulomatous disease with an unknown etiology. The liver is one of the most frequently affected organs. This case is presented to emphasize that hepatic granulomatous foci can lead to a determination of etiology in a diagnosis of sarcoidosis. A 53-year-old-female patient with complaints of fatigue and abdominal pain was admitted to the clinic of gastroenterology. The blood levels of alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transferase were markedly increased. The autoimmune parameters were negative. A Tru-Cut

The extracellular heat shock proteins (eHsp) family act as molecular chaperones regulating folding, transporting protein and are associated with immune modulation in different physiological and pathological processes. They have been localized in different gestational tissues and their concentration in amniotic fluid and serum has been determined. In the present study, we proposed to determine the concentration of eHsp-60, -70, IL-1β and TNFα in the serum of pregnant patients with 34 weeks of gestation with and without clinical evidences of preeclampsia (PE). Our results indicate significant in

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a significant threat to patient health and a major concern during drug development. Recently, multiple circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to be potential biomarkers for DILI. To adapt and validate miRNAs for clinical use, we investigated the time-course changes in miR-122 expression levels in an acetaminophen-induced liver injury model in rats. In addition, miR-155 and miR-21 were evaluated as makers of inflammation and regeneration, respectively, to characterize liver status. Our results revealed that miR-122 is an early and sensitive biomark

In this study, we investigated the hepatoprotective effects of aged black garlic (ABG) in rodent models of liver injury. ABG inhibited carbon tetrachloride-induced elevation of aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT), which are markers of hepatocellular damage, in SD rats. D-galactosamineinduced hepatocellular damage was also suppressed by ABG treatment. However, ABG does not affect the elevation of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), a marker of hepatobilliary damage, in rats treated with carbon tetrachloride or D-galactosamine. We also examined the effect of ABG on high-fat diet

This study aimed to investigate the effects of galangin on liver fibrosis in rats induced by subcutaneous injection of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). The administration of CCl4 to rats for 12 weeks caused significant increase of hyaluronic acid, laminin, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase and decrease of total protein, albumin in serum, while the influences could be reversed by galangin. Galangin markedly reduced hepatic malondialdehyde, hydroxyproline concentration, increased activities of liver superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase compared with CCl4-treated rats. Histological

Hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic extract of flowers of Vitex trifolia (Verbenaceae) was studied against CCl4 induced hepatic injury in albino rats. The plant extract (EVT) at the dose of 200 mg/kg, p.o. showed a remarkable hepatoprotective activity. CCl4 induced a significant rise in serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin and gamma glutamate transpeptidase (GGTP). Treatment of rats with EVT significantly (P<0.001) altered serum biomarker enzyme levels to near normal against CCl4 treated r

D-Galactosamine (GalN)-induced liver injury is associated with reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) supplementation on acute GalN-induced oxidative liver injury. Hepatotoxicity induced by single intraperitoneal injection of GalN (500 mg/kg body wt) was evident from increase in lipid peroxidation and serum marker enzymes (asparate transaminase, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydrogenase). The decreased activities of enzymic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxi
