Snowmelt periods as hot moments for soil N dynamics: a case study in Maine, USA.

The vernal transition represents the seasonal transition to spring, occurring as temperatures rise at the end of winter. With rapid snowmelt, microbial community turnover, and accelerated nutrient cycling, this is a critical but relatively under-studied period of ecosystem function. We conducted a study over two consecutive winters (2015-2016) at the Bear Brook Watershed in Maine to examine how changing winter conditions (warming winters, reduced snow accumulation) altered soil nitrogen availability and stream N export during winter and the vernal transition, and how these patterns were influe

Electrochemical thioester synthesis enabled by phosphine promotion from carboxylic acids and disulfides.

Thioesters serve as important pharmacophores and synthetic intermediates, yet their conventional synthesis typically requires high temperatures, transition metal catalysts, or toxic and malodorous thiols. Herein, we present a simple and green electrochemical approach for the thioesterification of carboxylic acids with aromatic disulfides as direct sulfur surrogates, promoted by triphenylphosphine. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions without requiring transition metals, external reducing agents, or inert atmosphere. A broad scope of aromatic, aliphatic, and heterocyclic carboxylic acids

Phenotypic Switching and Filamentation in Candida haemulonii, an Emerging Opportunistic Pathogen of Humans.

Phenotypic plasticity is a common strategy adopted by fungal pathogens to adapt to diverse host environments. Candida haemulonii is an emerging multidrug-resistant human pathogen that is closely related to Candida auris. Until recently, it was assumed that C. haemulonii is incapable of phenotypic switching or filamentous growth. In this study, we report the identification of three distinct phenotypes in C. haemulonii: white, pink, and filament. The white and pink phenotypes differ in cellular size, colony morphology, and coloration on phloxine B- or CuSO4-containing agar. Switching between the

Effect of ring substituent position on the structural and optoelectronic properties of novel quasi low-dimensional hybrid 2-, 3-, and 4-(bromomethyl)pyridinium lead bromides.

In this work, the synthesis, crystal structure, morphology, and optoelectronic properties of novel quasi low-dimensional hybrid (bromomethyl)pyridinium crystalline phases (2-BrCH2PyH)Pb2Br5, (3-BrCH2PyH)PbBr3, and (4-BrCH2PyH)PbBr3 are reported. The first compound formed quasi 2D crystals, while the other two species crystallized as quasi 1D structures. DFT calculations predicted that the bromides are semiconductors featuring electronic VB-to-CB transitions of ∼3.2 eV. (2-BrCH2PyH)Pb2Br5 and (3-BrCH2PyH)PbBr3 exhibited low-temperature (77 K) photoluminescence (PL). However, PL was not observed

MOF-Induced Pore Confinement: A Strategy for Thermomechanically Robust and High-Strength Liquid Crystal Elastomers.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are premier candidates for soft robotics due to their large, reversible actuation. However, their utility is often restricted by a fundamental trade-off: as temperature increases, orientational order diminishes, causing a sharp loss in load-bearing capacity and actuation stress above the isotropic transition. Here, we report a sequential integration strategy that overcomes this thermal limitation by embedding ultrathin Cu-TCPP metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets within the LCE network. This approach establishes a pore-confinement-enabled architecture that

Isopropylammonium as a Dual-Role Cation: Spacer and Perovskitizer in Ruddlesden-Popper Lead Bromides.

Layered hybrid perovskites are attractive optoelectronic materials for a wide range of applications. This study reports three layered Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) bromides comprising small isopropylammonium (IPA+) cations: IPA2MA2Pb3Br10, IPA2DMAPb2Br7, and IPA2(IPA0.77MHy0.23)Pb2Br7 (MA+ = methylammonium, DMA+ = dimethylammonium, MHy+ = methylhydrazinium). Crucially, the IPA2(IPA0.77MHy0.23)Pb2Br7 compound represents a unique case where IPA+ cations occupy the perovskite cavities, thus acting as a perovskitizer, a dual role previously unobserved for this cation in lead halide perovskites. Mononuclear Fe(III) complexes with 2,4-dichloro-6-((quinoline-8-ylimino)methyl)phenolate: synthesis, structure, and magnetic behavior.

Three Fe(III)-based coordination complexes [Fe(dqmp)2](NO3)·H2O (1), [Fe(dqmp)2](BF4)·2CH3COCH3 (2), and [Fe(dqmp)2](ClO4) (3) were synthesized from Fe(NO3)3·9H2O/Fe(ClO4)3·xH2O, NaBF4, and 2,4-dichloro-6-((quinoline-8-ylimino)methyl)phenol (Hdqmp) in methanol/acetone and characterized. The structures of complexes 1-3 were determined via single-crystal X-ray crystallography at 100 K and room temperature, and their magnetic properties in the solid and solution forms were investigated. All complexes showed meridional structures with two tridentate dqmp- ligands coordinated with Fe(III) cations.

Isomerization and Fragmentation Reactions on the [C2SH4] Potential Energy Surface: The Metastable Thione S-Methylide Isomer.

Thione S-methylide, parent species of the thiocarbonyl ylide family, is a 1,3-dipolar species on the [C2SH4] potential energy surface, not so much studied as its isomers, thiirane, vinyl thiol, and thioacetaldehyde. The conrotatory ring-closure reaction toward thiirane was studied in the 90s, but no complete analysis of the potential energy surface is available. In this paper, we report a computational study of the reaction scheme linking all species. We employed several computational methods (density functional theory, CCSD(T) composite schemes, and CASSCF/CASPT2 multireference procedures) to

Temperature-dependent functional inversion of Cav3.2 channels during repetitive activity.

Temperature strongly influences neuronal excitability and voltage-gated ion channel function. Cav3.2 T-type calcium channels are highly expressed in dorsal root ganglion and trigeminal ganglion neurons, where they contribute to nociceptive signaling, cold hypersensitivity, and neuropathic pain. However, how temperature influences Cav3.2 function during repetitive neuronal activity remains incompletely understood. Here, we investigated the effects of temperature on Cav3.2 gating and calcium influx using whole-cell voltage-clamp recordings performed at 37 °C, 22 °C, and 13 °C. Cooling markedly r

Neurophysiology of brain temperature dysregulation in humans.

Brain temperature, a fundamental modulator of neural function, remains dramatically understudied despite its critical role in health and disease. This review synthesizes current understanding of brain thermoregulation and its disruption in neurological conditions, addressing a significant knowledge gap in neuroscience. We examined the physiological mechanisms maintaining brain temperature homeostasis, including the interplay between cerebral blood flow, metabolism, and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. Analysis of publication trends reveals that brain temperature research is underrepresented by 7-

Ambient extreme heat exposure in summer and transitional months and emergency department visits and hospital admissions due to pregnancy complications.

Although extreme heat exposure (EHE) was reported to be associated with increased risks of multiple diseases, little is known about the effects of EHE on pregnancy complications. We examined the EHE-pregnancy complications associations by lag days, subtypes, sociodemographic characteristics, and areas in New York State (NYS). We conducted a case-crossover analysis to assess the EHE-pregnancy complications associations in summer (June-August) and transitional months (May and September). All emergency department (ED) visits and hospital admissions due to pregnancy complications (ICD 9 codes: 630

Composition-Dependent Deformation and Shape-Memory Mechanisms of PETG/POE Blends: An All-Atom Molecular Dynamics Study.

PETG/POE blends are thermo-responsive shape-memory systems with composition-dependent deformation and thermomechanical recovery behavior, but their molecular mechanism remains unclear. In this work, all-atom molecular dynamics simulations were performed for PETG/POE blends with different compositions. Model reliability was supported by density stabilization during equilibration and by reasonable agreement between simulated and experimental glass transition temperatures, with glass transition temperature deviations below 1.3%. Tensile simulations showed that increasing POE content reduced Young…

From Simplicity to Complexity: Substituent-Controlled Z' Multiplicity as a Design Principle for Thermally Robust Yet Programmable Anisotropic Expansion.

Anisotropic thermal expansion in molecular crystals has predominantly been reported for low-Z' systems (Z' ≤ 2), in which only a few independent molecules occupy the asymmetric unit. In such crystals, thermal expansion is often interpreted using simplified models based on rigid molecular motion or averaged intermolecular interactions. However, these descriptions fail to capture the complex anisotropy, switchable responses, and multistep phase transitions frequently observed in molecular solids. Here, we report high-Z' molecular crystals that exhibit both thermal robustness and stepwise, rapid

Thermographic Analysis of the Cooling Dynamics of Liquid Metal Droplets.

This work presents an experimental study of the thermal dynamics of cooling galinstan liquid metal droplets using thermographic and optical imaging techniques. Galinstan droplets were subjected to controlled cooling on a Peltier-based system with their temperature and morphological evolution recorded simultaneously. Thermography enabled the detection of transient thermal phenomena and localized phase transitions, including supercooling and dendrite formation. The analysis revealed complex, nonequilibrium behaviors, such as metastable thermal and morphological behaviors with coupled variations

Bioelectrical phase transitions.

Electrical signaling in biological systems is generally understood through the lens of single-channel biophysics, yet whether ensembles of ion channels can undergo cooperative opening and closing remains unclear. Here, we show that ensembles of voltage-gated ion channels can undergo bioelectrical order-disorder phase transitions driven by feedback between channel currents and local membrane voltage. When channels open, they carry ion-selective current that redistributes ions near the membrane and perturbs the transmembrane potential, thereby biasing the gating of nearby channels. This emergent

Experimental Investigation on the Gas Phase Behaviour and Inhibition for Hydrates with CO2-Rich Gas in an Oil-Water System.

During deepwater oil and gas production and shut-in operations, the high-pressure and low-temperature environment readily induces hydrate formation of CO2-rich associated gas in oil-water systems, thereby posing serious flow assurance risks. This study systematically investigated the nucleation, growth, and morphological evolution of hydrates in oil-water systems under different gas-phase states using fully visualized high-pressure apparatus, along with the effects of temperature, pressure, CO2 concentration, and inhibitors on hydrate formation behavior. The results showed that gas phase trans
