BACKGROUND: The impact of tuberculosis (TB) is exacerbated in Africa because of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pandemic. Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) diagnosis is difficult in HIV-infected patients and negative sputum results are more common which leads to diagnostic delay and increases morbidity and mortality. Extra-pulmonary samples such as stool may be easier to obtain and our approach may therefore significantly improve PTB detection in people living with HIV.
OBJECTIVE: To detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis from the stool of HIV sero-positive individuals suspected of pulmonary TB.

BACKGROUND: The burden of childhood tuberculosis (TB) remains significant especially in areas of high HIV prevalence. Clinical diagnosis predominates, despite advances in molecular and microbiological diagnostics. The aim of this study is to identify clinical features associated with culture-confirmed pulmonary TB (PTB) in children.
METHODS: Children admitted to hospital were enrolled in a study of novel diagnostics for PTB in South Africa. Standardized clinical, radiological and microbiological data were collected. Definite TB was defined by culture of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from a respi

Although the antigen detection assay has the potential to discriminate active tuberculosis from latent infection, development of such a test for the accurate diagnosis of this serious disease has only recently become a matter of interest. Here we present evidence that a Mycobacterium tuberculosis protein (ornithine carboamyltransferase, coded for by MT_1694; Rv1656 [argF]) is an interesting candidate molecule for this test development. The protein was initially discovered by mass spectroscopy in urine of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and shown by Western blot analysis to be present in M

The specific features of disseminated pulmonary tuberculosis were studied in patients isolating Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MBT) with a high (n = 135) and low (n = 50) viability. The degree of the pathogen's viability was shown to determine the clinical characteristics of a specific process and the efficiency of its treatment. It is speculated that there is a direct relationship between the viability ofmycobacteria and their virulence. There are differences in the nature of primary drug resistance in MBT with their varying variability.

SETTING: The effectiveness of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination in reducing tuberculosis (TB) prevalence rates is poor, resulting in urgent need for improved immunization programs, with new and more effective vaccines against TB.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a recombinant Tice BCG vaccine against TB that overexpresses the 38-kDa antigen of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in order to protect against infection by M. tuberculosis H37Rv and hyper-virulent M. tuberculosis Beijing genotype.
DESIGN: M. tuberculosis 38-kDa protein was cloned into a mycobacterial shuttle plasmid, which was used to overe

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health problem in Ghana, with high morbidity and mortality rates. Persons with TB are at risk of adverse cardiovascular disease with hyperlipidemia being a major risk factor. The standard treatment for pulmonary TB includes a combination of anti-tuberculosis drugs such as Rifampicin, Isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol which have been associated with changes in lipid profile that could increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Despite the existence of the links between cholesterol and TB, it is not clear to what extent the treat

Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) are the most common solid malignancies in young adult men. Advanced disease requiring systemic chemotherapy may lead to immunosuppression and increase vulnerability to opportunistic infections, particularly in tuberculosis (TB)-endemic regions. Coexistence of visceral metastases and infectious comorbidities such as pulmonary TB can substantially complicate diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic decision-making. Latent TB infection (LTBI) reactivation following chemotherapy is a recognized but likely underreported complication in patients with solid tumors, po

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is reported to infect about a third of the world's population but only 10% are thought to develop active tuberculosis (TB) disease. Host immunity regulated by human leukocyte antigens (HLA) is an important determinant of the outcome of the disease. Here we investigate HLA class II gene polymorphisms in susceptibility to TB, and whether particular HLA class II alleles were associated with TB in Uganda.
METHODS: HIV negative patients with pulmonary TB (n = 43) and genetically related healthy household controls (n = 42) were typed for their HLA II cla

Data on genotypic diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) is important to understand its epidemiology, human adaptation, clinical phenotypes, and drug resistance. This study aimed to characterize MTBC clinical isolates circulating in a predominantly pastoralist area in Ethiopia, a country where tuberculosis is the second leading cause of mortality. Culture of sputum samples collected from a total of 325 pulmonary TB suspects was done to isolate MTBC. Spoligotyping was used to characterize 105 isolates from culture positive slopes and the result was compared with an international

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a major health problem in Central America. In Honduras, with an incidence rate of 81/100,000, it is an increasingly common cause of morbidity and hospitalization. This study was conducted to examine drug-resistant tuberculosis and prevalence of infection with atypical mycobacteria in Honduran patients with suspected pulmonary tuberculosis.
METHODS: Pulmonary specimens from 235 Honduran patients with suspected tuberculosis were examined by acid-fast smears and culture. The 95 mycobacterial strains isolated were identified to species level and drug susceptibility tes

A series of five children with delayed presentation of congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM), all initially misdiagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosis, is described. All five children presented with recurrent respiratory infections and failure to thrive, having shown poor response to multiple antibiotics course, including anti-tubercular therapy for variable periods. Successful surgical intervention was belatedly instigated.

A 36-year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of adrenal insufficiency. About one month before admission, he was diagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosis and started anti-tuberculosis therapy with isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. On the tenth day, general fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea developed, and laboratory examination showed hyponatremia [126 mEq/l]. Enhanced CT on admission revealed bilateral adrenal mass-like enlargement, and further examination showed high level of plasma ACTH, and low level of cortisol. These findings led to a diagnosis of adrena

Rasmussen's aneurysm is a rare but potentially fatal complication of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), characterized by the development of a pseudoaneurysm in the pulmonary arterial system due to chronic inflammation and weakening of the vessel wall. This condition arises from tuberculous destruction of lung parenchyma, leading to erosion of adjacent pulmonary arteries and subsequent aneurysm formation. Clinically, it presents with life-threatening hemoptysis, often requiring prompt diagnosis and intervention. Imaging modalities such as contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and digital subtrac

Cutaneous tuberculosis (TB) is a rare extrapulmonary manifestation that often presents atypically, particularly in patients with comorbid conditions like diabetes mellitus. Such presentations frequently lead to diagnostic delays and prolonged morbidity. We report the case of a woman in her late 40s with type 2 diabetes who presented with a chronic, progressively enlarging facial plaque and systemic constitutional symptoms. While radiological findings were highly suggestive of pulmonary TB, repeated sputum testing was inconclusive. Diagnostic confirmation was achieved through tissue-based molecu
