A 65-year-old male was hospitalized because of micturition pain and urinary oozing from several fistulas on the perineal and the left gluteal skin. Oozing had been present for about 50 years, after receiving mass resection of his left scrotum or perineum, and left orchiectomy. The main focus was on the left dorsal site of the anus. Compression around this area produced malodorous grayish pus discharge from many fistulas, although the anus was intact. Although he had histories of spinal caries and renal tuberculosis, both pus and urine cultures showed Staphylococcus spp. and no growth of Mycoba

INTRODUCTION: Spinal tuberculosis (TB) is a common infectious disease prevalent in developing countries and an increasing issue in developed countries. The association of tuberculosis with spondylolisthesis is rarely reported in literature. The aim of our review is to analyze the clinical features and radiologic characteristics of TB spondylolisthesis and to provide a concise update on its surgical management, based on the literature.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed after conducting a thorough search of the PubMed database. Articles were selected systematically and reviewed complet

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis spondylitis or Pott's disease is the most common destructive form of skeletal tuberculosis. The most commonly affected site is the thoracolumbar vertebra. Once invading the adjacent structures of the vertebrae and intervertebral discs ultimately form an abscess causing spinal cord compression, vertebral collapse, and severe kyphotic deformity.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present the first-ever case done in King Fahd Military Medical Complex in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, of an 18-year-old male diagnosed with tuberculosis spondylitis who was complaining of progressive upper

OBJECTIVE: This was a pilot teleradiology project connecting two secondary KwaZulu-Natal hospitals' radiography departments to a central Durban teaching hospital. The purpose of the study was to assess the usefulness of same-day teleradiology reports to the medical staff and whether such a service changed patient management.
DESIGN: After 1 month's service at each hospital, the first 200 teleradiology reports, original radiographs and patients' case notes were reviewed to determine whether any errors in interpretation of the radiographs had been made and whether the reports had changed patien

At diagnosis of the cerebral and spinal tuberculous meningitis magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is the primary imaging technique. Magnetic resonance images reveal cerebrospinal fluid collection and obliteration of the spinal subarachnoid space. The contrast-enhanced MR imaging shows nodular and thick intradural enhancement. Herein, the authors reported advanced MR imaging findings of the cerebral and spinal tuberculous leptomeningitis.

The incidence of tuberculosis in Western countries is rising, and continued vigilance together with an awareness of its protean manifestations is essential. Cutaneous tuberculosis is a relatively rare manifestation of the disease, accounting for only 1% of extrapulmonary cases of tuberculosis and 0.14% of all reported cases of tuberculosis. A 19-year-old male patient was admitted to our clinic with skin lesions both at the front and at the back of his body. With clinical findings, histopathology, polymerase chain reaction, PA lung graph, and computerised tomography, the patient was diagnosed w

A case of a generalized hematogenous tuberculosis with exacerbation in a woman of 62 is described. The disease had an undulating course and was manifested by a rare combination of miliary lung tuberculosis with extrapulmonal lesions. The latter included cavernous spondylitis with two paravertebral abscesses, fibrinous pericarditis and a large-focal lesion in the myocardium.

A case of tuberculous radiculitis in the lumbosacral region resulting in flaccid paresis of the lower limbs is presented. The primary site of tuberculosis was the intestine. Hematogenic dissemination resulted in organ tuberculosis of the third lumbar vertebra and left kidney. The infection spread locally into the lumbosacral dura and nerve roots. A decline in general immunological resistance lead to fatal dissemination of the disease into the meninges, lungs, liver, left adrenal and right kidney. Differential diagnostic problems, especially the Guillain-Barré syndrome, are discussed.

Here, we report the case of a woman in her 40s who came with pyogenic meningitis and infarcts in the brain. While on treatment with antibiotics, she developed new-onset weakness involving bilateral lower limbs and one upper limb 2 weeks into the course of illness. MRI of the spine showed an infarct in the spinal cord. Spinal cord infarction as a complication of pyogenic meningitis is not well recognised unlike tuberculosis meningitis. Unlike ischaemic strokes where thrombolysis is done, for stroke related to infections, there are no definite strategies. Our patient was treated with physiothera

BACKGROUND: Salmonella Dublin is a zoonotic pathogen that is associated with invasive infections and high morbidity and mortality rates. Here we present the case of a 78-year-old man with a rare manifestation of a paravertebral abscess in the thoracolumbar spine caused by Salmonella Dublin.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient had a history of spinal tuberculosis and poorly controlled diabetes. The abscess was successfully managed by drainage, and a 12-week course of moxifloxacin resulted in complete recovery. Salmonella Dublin was identified using culture-based serotyping. The patient resided in a

Percutaneous vertebroplasty-associated spinal infection is uncommon but may cause progressive vertebral destruction and can mimic tuberculous spondylitis on imaging. The detection of low-virulence skin commensals such as Cutibacterium species in deep specimens also creates a diagnostic challenge because contamination and true infection must be distinguished. We report a 78-year-old man who developed recurrent progressive low back pain shortly after percutaneous vertebroplasty for an L2 compression fracture. Baseline computed tomography (CT) and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Tuberculous spondylitis may compromise adjacent vascular structures, leading to the formation of tuberculous pseudoaneurysms - vascular lesions resulting from infection-induced destruction of the arterial wall. Despite their infrequency, these pseudoaneurysms carry a substantial risk of rupture and pose considerable diagnostic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old female presented with a painful mass in the right abdominal region, persisting for 2 months. She had been diagnosed with tuberculous spondylitis involving the L1-L2 vertebrae. The initial manageme

BACKGROUND: Prospective studies regarding tuberculous myelitis are lacking. We aimed to prospectively evaluate patients with tuberculous myelitis to identify the features that distinguish tuberculous myelitis from other myelitis.
METHODS: This was a prospective study. Patients presenting with paraparesis/quadriparesis, and MRI showing myelitis were included. All patients were subjected to clinical, neuroimaging, and laboratory evaluation. Diagnosis of definite tuberculous myelitis was made if GeneXpert test in CSF was positive. Probable tuberculous myelitis was diagnosed if there was evidence

Literature on the treatment of cervical spinal tuberculosis (CSTB) is uncommon, the surgical approaches to cervical spinal tuberculosis were controversial. The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of 3 surgical techniques in CSTB patients, and to determine the most appropriate approach for CSTB patients. Between April 2006 and June 2012, we performed a retrospective review of clinical and radiographic data that were collected from 850 consecutive spinal tubercular patients, including 87 patients who were diagnosed and treated for CSTB in our hospital. Apart from 9 patients be

BACKGROUND: The clinical incidence of spinal infection is gradually increasing, and its onset is insidious, easily leading to missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis, which may lead to serious complications such as nervous system dysfunction, spinal instability and/or deformity, and cause a huge burden on society and families. Early identification of the causative agent and precision medicine will greatly reduce the suffering of patients. At present, the main pathogenic bacteria that cause spinal infection are Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Pneumococcus, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella. Ther

In spinal tuberculosis MRI can clearly demonstrate combinations of anterior and posterior lesions as well as pedicular involvement. We propose a classification system, using information provided by MRI, to help to plan the appropriate surgical treatment for patients with thoracic spinal tuberculosis. We describe a series of 47 patients, divided into four groups, based on the surgical protocol used in the management. Group A consisted of patients with anterior lesions which were stable with no kyphotic deformity, and were treated with anterior debridement and strut grafting. Group B comprised p

We reviewed the initial chest roentgenograms of 182 consecutive adult patients with proven active tuberculosis. Less than 50% of all cases were known or suspected at the time of initial presentation. There is a low degree of correlation between radiologically discernible active pulmonary tuberculosis and extrapulmonary tuberculosis. A high percentage of cases represent uncommon pulmonary locations. We present the frequency of occurrence of four common pulmonary patterns.

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis is more common in end-stage renal disease than in normal subjects, and it frequently poses both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We describe 2 dialysis patients with tuberculosis of the spine (Pott's disease). The 1st patient presented with back and left hip pain, low-grade fever, left-quadriceps weakness, hypoesthesia of the left thigh, and hypoactive left-knee jerk. X-rays of the spine showed only osteophytes. Magnetic resonance imaging showed increased signal intensity of L3 with focal expansion into the spinal canal. A computerized tomography guided biopsy
