Spinal cord injury leads to increased risk for cardiovascular disease and results in greater risk of death. Subclinical markers of atherosclerosis have been reported in carotid arteries of spinal cord-injured individuals (SCI), but the development of lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD) has not been investigated in this population. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of spinal cord injury on ankle-brachial index (ABI) and intima-media thickness (IMT) of upper-body and lower-extremity arteries. We hypothesized that the aforementioned measures of lower-extremity PA

The authors used data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and latent trajectory class modeling to determine patterns of neighborhood poverty over 20 years (1980-2000 residential history questionnaires were geocoded and linked to US Census data). Using these patterns, the authors examined 1) whether trajectories of neighborhood poverty were associated with differences in the amount of subclinical atherosclerosis (common carotid intimal-media thickness) and 2) associated risk factors (body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, current smoking) at baseline (January 2000-August 2002). OBJECTIVE: There is plenty of evidence that osteoprotegerin (OPG) is linked to subclinical vascular damage and predicts cardiovascular disease in high-risk populations. Our aim is to investigate the relationships of OPG/free soluble receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (sRANKL) to insulin resistance, brachial artery flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD), and the carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a disorder characterized by hyperandrogenism, impaired glucose control, and endothelial injury.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional, observational study.

BACKGROUND: Patients infected with HIV present with premature atherosclerosis, and the 2 diseases share common pathogenic pathways. We investigated mutations in the monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and CCR-2 genes, which are known to control aspects of these pathways, to ascertain whether they are involved in atherogenesis in these patients.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed carotid and femoral artery ultrasonography to detect subclinical atherosclerosis in patients infected with HIV (n=183). MCP-1-2518G and CCR-2 64I polymorphisms were determined in the HIV group and in a populatio

Background and Purpose- Intracranial artery calcification detected by computed tomography is associated with ischemic stroke as an indicator of intracranial atherosclerosis. However, little is known about its histopathology. This study aimed to explore the intracranial calcification patterns and their associations with atherosclerotic plaques. Methods- We recruited 32 adult autopsy cases to assess the calcification patterns and distributions in the middle cerebral artery, vertebral artery, and basilar artery. The relationships of calcification patterns with plaque phenotype and luminal stenosi

Background and Purpose- Carotid web (CW) is a rare form of focal fibromuscular dysplasia defined as an abnormal shelf-like projection of intimal fibrous tissue into the carotid bulb. It is theorized that CW leads to ischemic stroke secondary to blood flow stasis and subsequent embolization. The natural history and optimal management of CW are unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we performed a systematic literature review (SLR) of CW. Methods- Our librarians performed a SLR for CW and related terminology. Patient-level demographics, stroke risk factors, neuroimaging findings, stroke recurre

The present study evaluated the effect of anagliptin on intimal hyperplasia following carotid artery injury in Sprague‑Dawley rats. Sprague‑Dawley rats weighing 280‑300 g were injured using a 2F Fogarty balloon embolectomy catheter. The rats were divided into injury‑(saline) and anagliptin‑(10 mg/kg/day) treated groups. vascular injuries were induced in the left carotid artery, followed by evaluation of neointima formation at 28 days. The right and left carotid arteries were harvested and evaluated with histological evaluation, and the plasma activity of glucagon‑like peptide 1 receptor (GLP‑1

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) may lead to a poor quality of life. Although percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is widely used for the treatment of PAD, restenosis remains a major drawback. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays potential roles in many physiological processes, such as vasodilatation and inhibition of smooth muscle cell proliferation. However, little is known regarding its role in arterial restenosis. In this study, we induced atherosclerotic-like lesions in rabbits, and we treated the rabbits with balloon angioplasty (BA) in a similar manner as PTA performed in the clinic. The

BACKGROUND: Microsomal (m) prostaglandin (PG) E₂ synthase (S)-1 catalyzes the formation of PGE₂ from PGH₂, a cyclooxygenase product that is derived from arachidonic acid. Previous studies in mice suggest that targeting mPGES-1 may be less likely to cause hypertension or thrombosis than cyclooxygenase-2-selective inhibition or deletion in vivo. Indeed, deletion of mPGES-1 retards atherogenesis and angiotensin II-induced aortic aneurysm formation. The role of mPGES-1 in the response to vascular injury is unknown.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Mice were subjected to wire injury of the femoral artery. Bot

Obesity is associated with a number of risk factors, such as hyperlipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, hypertension, and early atherosclerosis. Evidence indicates that atherosclerosis begins in childhood and progresses over decades. In this work, we examined the relationship between cardiovascular risk factors and ultrasonographic signs of subclinical atherosclerosis in 77 obese children and adolescents compared to 40 non-obese healthy peers. Carotis intima media thickness (cIMT), carotid artery compliance (CAC), brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), and established cardiovascular risk facto

Amussat's sign is typically a transverse laceration of the intimal layer of carotid arteries described in cases of hanging. Subtotal laceration of the carotid artery is not strictly specific for hanging and can be also caused by blunt neck trauma, extreme overstretching, or whiplash-injuries. In a prospective autopsy study of 178 cases of hanging, Amussat's sign was found in 29 cases (a relative frequency of 16.1%). A statistically significant association between the occurrence of tears in the intimal layer of carotid arteries and the victims' age was discovered in the cases studied (the frequ

BACKGROUND: Optimal glucose control in juvenile type 1 diabetes mellitus is necessary but not sufficient to reduce the burden of cardiovascular events in later life. This emphasizes the importance of searching for other possible risk factors associated with diabetes. We investigated whether recurrent episodes of acute respiratory infections and exposure to tobacco smoke could influence vascular phenotypes for early atherosclerosis in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Common carotid artery elasticity and intima-media thickness along with circulating markers

OBJECTIVE: In a rat model of endarterectomy, we investigated the potential role of the peroxynitrite-poly(adenosine diphosphate[ADP]-ribose) polymerase (PARP) pathway in neointima formation and the effect of pharmacologic inhibition of PARP on vascular remodeling.
METHODS: Carotid endarterectomy was performed in male Sprague-Dawley rats by incision of the left carotid artery with removal of intima. Three groups were studied: sham-operated rats (n = 10), control rats with endarterectomy (n = 10) or rats with endarterectomy treated with the PARP inhibitor, INO-1001 (5 mg/kg daily) postoperative

INTRODUCTION: Limited availability of a large animal model of carotid atherosclerosis has limited preclinical evaluation of endovascular therapeutic devices. The present study is aimed at developing such animal models with a novel approach, emphasizing the role of hemodynamics.
METHODS: Using 18 carotid arteries from 9 miniswine, surgical partial ligation (approximately 80% stenosis) was carried out in untreated (group I; n = 6) and balloon-injured arteries (group II; n = 9). Three arteries were subjected to sham-operation for control (group III; n = 3). All animals were fed with a high-fat d
