Seminal duct obstruction may result in obstructive azoospermia (OA) and severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) (<0.5 million/mL) (Nordhoff et al., 2015). Cases of partial OA and OAT can be treated effectively by microsurgical anastomosis (Goldstein and Kim, 2013) to obtain successful surgical reversal. Portions of the reproductive tract of the male (Trachemys scripta) turtle were examined by immunocytochemistry for evidence of the capacity to produce and respond to estrogen hormones (via the expression of P450 aromatase and estrogen receptors). Aromatase was detected in both the Sertoli and Leydig cells of the testis and was expressed at different levels during the spermatogenic cycle, being highest in the quiescent testis and lowest during germ cell meiosis. Epididymal ultrasonography has proved effective in finding anatomic obstructive alterations affecting the epididymis. The authors investigated two groups: 1. Bilateral vas agenesia (20 epididymis)--(sensitivity of EUS--100%) 2. Normozoospermic noninfertile patients (before different surgical exploration)--(45 epididymis) EUS resulted "ideal" epididymis in 36 out of 45. EUS was "altered" in 9 cases. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a recently isolated vasoactive peptide, which is present, together with catecholamines, in sympathetic nerves and in the adrenal medulla. In the present study, we report that pretreatment with sympatholytic agents influences the tissue levels of NPY-like immunoreactivity (NPY-LI) in the guinea-pig.
