Pulmonary artery calcification in recipient twins of twin to twin transfusion syndrome: a report of three cases.

Twin to twin transfusion syndrome may rarely complicate monochorionic twin gestation, resulting in discordant size of the twins. Cardiac dysfunction and various types of cardiac defects have been described in the recipient twin of this syndrome. Pulmonary artery calcification has been described earlier in one case only. We report three recipients of twin to twin transfusion syndrome with pulmonary artery calcification resulting in obstruction of pulmonary trunk in two of these. One case with progressive severe narrowing was successfully operated at four months of age with patch repair of pulmo

The role of sclerostin in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases- a potential biomarker?

Sclerostin, a glycoprotein primarily synthesized by osteocytes, is a key regulator of bone remodeling through its inhibition of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Beyond its established role in bone metabolism, sclerostin has been identified in vascular tissues, including smooth muscle cells of blood vessels, suggesting a potential role in cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Research on sclerostin's role in CVD has yielded conflicting results, highlighting its complex involvement in vascular calcification and atherosclerosis. Some studies associate elevated sclerostin levels with a reduced risk o…

The origin and significance of thyroid psammoma bodies.

We have used ultrastructural techniques to study the pathogenesis of calcifications and psammoma bodies in human thyroid disorders. Particular attention was paid to psammoma bodies associated with papillary thyroid carcinoma which were found to represent the end stages of two different biologic events. The one event took place in the vascular stalk of the neoplastic papillae, starting with a thickening of the base lamina followed by a vascular thrombosis, calcification, and tumor cell necrosis. In the other, intralymphatic tumor thrombi in the thyroid adjacent to the main tumors or in the oppo

Möbius syndrome: evidence for a vascular etiology.

We report five infants with restricted lateral gaze, facial diplegia, feeding difficulty, and/or respiratory disorders without significant pulmonary disease. Viral studies were negative in all patients. Two children had radiologic findings that included brain-stem hypoplasia and symmetric calcification in the dorsal tectum at the junction of the midbrain and pons. Autopsy of one of these two children demonstrated capillary telangiectasia in the mesencephalon and pons. The other three children had normal computed tomographic (CT) scans. However, their autopsies revealed focal brain-stem necrosi

Several errors appeared in the article titled "Difference in the Association between Growth Differentiation Factor 15 and Coronary Calcified Plaque According to Chronic Kidney Disease" by Hayato Shimizu, Satoshi Hoshide, Hiroshi Funayama, and Kazuomi Kario (Vol. 66 No.4, 540-6, 2025). In the "Results" on page 543, "the percentage of calcified plaque volume (r = 0.275, P < 0.001) " should be replaced by "the percentage of calcified plaque volume (r = 0.275, P = 0.012) ". In addition, Figure 2 on page 544 should be replaced by following.

ROBITAL Technique: Combination of Sequential ROtational and orBITAL Atherectomy in Management of Complex Coronary Calcium.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Heavily calcified coronary artery disease remains one of the most formidable challenges in contemporary percutaneous coronary interventions, often leading to suboptimal stent expansion, procedural complications, and poor long-term outcomes. Over the years, a wide range of calcium modification techniques have been developed, including cutting and scoring balloons, rotational atherectomy, orbital atherectomy, high-pressure balloons, intravascular lithotripsy, and laser atherectomy, each with unique mechanisms, strengths, and limitations. This article aims to provide a comprehe

Large animal model of controlled peripheral artery calcification.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) in the lower extremity arteries leads to significant morbidity and mortality. Arterial calcification contributes to poor clinical outcomes and greatly increases the risk of amputation. Current treatments for calcific lesions are limited and yield suboptimal results. A large animal model that closely mimics calcific PAD and accommodates human-sized devices could enhance the development of safer and more effective therapies. Our objective was to create a swine model of late-stage arterial calcification to test the efficacy and side effects of surgical intervention

[Endovascular devices for severely calcified peripheral lesion preparation: state of the art].

Over the last few decades, endovascular revascularization techniques have revolutionized the treatment of peripheral artery disease, offering a less invasive alternative to surgery. However, the successful treatment of heavily calcified lesions is often compromised by various vascular complications, including recoils, dissections, and the need for target vessel reinterventions. This has prompted the development of several tools for lesion preparation, with the aim of achieving better procedural outcomes. This review aims to summarize the main characteristics and current evidence related to the

Intravascular lithotripsy in carotid disease.

Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) is a hybrid approach with neuroprotective flow reversal for treating carotid stenosis. Providers are increasingly choosing it for patients, especially those at high risk for carotid endarterectomy (CEA). However, TCAR's efficacy is limited by calcific atherosclerosis, which can hinder stent expansion and increase the risk of perioperative embolization. Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) is introduced as a promising solution to this issue. Initially developed for coronary and peripheral vascular diseases, IVL uses acoustic pressure waves to fracture cal

Zinc-alkaline phosphatase at sites of aortic calcification.

Zinc (Zn) is a normal trace element in mineralizing tissues, but it is unclear whether it is primarily bound to the mineral phase or to organic molecules involved in the mineralization process, or both. Tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) is a Zn metalloenzyme with two Zn ions bound to the M1 and M2 catalytic sites that functions to control the phosphate/pyrophosphate ratio during biomineralization. Here, we studied aortas from Tagln-Cre +/-; HprtALP/Y TNAP overexpressor (TNAP-OE) mice that develop severe calcification. Zn histochemistry was performed using the sulfide-silver staini

Mutation update: Variants of the ENPP1 gene in pathologic calcification, hypophosphatemic rickets, and cutaneous hypopigmentation with punctate keratoderma.

ENPP1 encodes ENPP1, an ectonucleotidase catalyzing hydrolysis of ATP to AMP and inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi), and an endogenous plasma protein physiologically preventing ectopic calcification of connective tissues. Mutations in ENPP1 have been reported in association with a range of human genetic diseases. In this mutation update, we provide a comprehensive review of all the pathogenic variants, likely pathogenic variants, and variants of unknown significance in ENPP1 associated with three autosomal recessive disorders-generalized arterial calcification of infancy (GACI), autosomal recessive

Association of infrapopliteal medial arterial calcification with lower-limb amputations in high-risk patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Medial arterial calcification (MAC) is a known risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity. The association between vascular calcifications and poor outcome in several vascular districts suggest that infrapopliteal MAC could be a risk factor for lower-limb amputation (LLA). This study's objective is to review the available literature focusing on the association between infrapopliteal MAC and LLA in high-risk patients. The PubMed and Embase databases were systematically searched. We selected original studies reporting the association between infrapopliteal MAC and LLAs in patients with diabetes an…

Review: update on the management of calciphylaxis.

Calciphylaxis is a disease of significant morbidity and mortality, predominantly affecting dialysis patients. The term 'calciphylaxis' was coined by Seyle et al. in 1961 to describe calcium deposition in the skin and subcutaneous soft tissue of uremic rats in response to 'triggers' (e.g. trauma, metallic salts) after exposure to 'sensitizing agents' (e.g. vitamin D and parathyroid hormone). In humans, calciphylaxis, however, is not a disorder of induced hypersensitivity. Instead, it is a disorder of cutaneous microvascular occlusion caused by thrombosis and calcification. Progressive, excrucia

Therapeutic warfarin use and the extrahepatic functions of vitamin K-dependent proteins.

The impact of warfarin therapy on the functions of extrahepatic vitamin K-dependent proteins (VKDP) is less clearly understood and less wide … fication of the vasculature. Studies have consistently found a correlation between warfarin use and vascular calcification with inhibition of MGP believed to be the main cause. Inhibition of MGP also appears to explain warfarin's well established teratogenic effect. Further adverse effects may also arise from warfarin's inhibition of other known extrahepatic VKDPs. The …

Blood serum atherogenicity and coronary artery calcification.

The phenomenon of blood serum atherogenicity was described as the ability of human serum to induce lipid accumulation in cultured cells. The results of recent two-year prospective study in asymptomatic men provided the evidence for association between the changes in serum atherogenicity and dynamics of carotid intima-media thickness progression. The present study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that blood serum atherogenicity and its changes in dynamics may be associated with accumulation of coronary calcium in subclinical atherosclerosis. It was performed in 782 CHD-free participants of

Unusual cause of myocardial ischemia in an infant.

Abnormal coronary artery anatomy should be ruled out in any patient with myocardial dysfunction and an abnormal electrocardiogram. The reported etiologies of infantile myocardial ischemia are abnormalities of coronary arteries, perinatal asphyxia, umbilical catheterization, and myocarditis. Generalized arterial calcification of infancy, although rare, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of infantile myocardial ischemia if coronary artery origin is found to be normal on echocardiography.

Blood flow in the foot, polyneuropathy and foot ulceration in diabetes mellitus.

Comparable groups of diabetic patients asymptomatic of neuropathy (Group A), with chronic painful polyneuropathy (Group B) and painless polyneuropathy causing recurrent foot ulceration (Group C) were studied for differences in pedal blood flow, peripheral somatic and autonomic neuropathy and vascular calcification. Blood flow abnormalities detected by doppler waveform analysis, and consistent with reduced peripheral vascular resistance, were found in all three diabetic patient groups. The abnormalities were of similar severity in Group A and B but generally more marked in Group C. Tests of per…

Intravascular lithotripsy versus rotational atherectomy in calcified coronary artery disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Coronary stenosis with severe calcification is a serious challenge for percutaneous coronary intervention. Coronary artery calcification interferes with stent expansion and catheter passage and leads to higher complications, such as target lesion failure, stent thrombosis, and cardiac mortality. There are multiple proposed modalities for calcium modification, such as intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) and rotational atherectomy. We aim to compare both techniques for calcified coronary artery disease. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, and Web of Science f
