BACKGROUND: Hyperactivity of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and functional deficits in hypertension are reduced after exercise training. We evaluate in arteries, kidney and plasma of hypertensive rats the sequential effects of training on vascular angiotensinogen, Ang II and Ang (1-7) content.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of vasodilator and antihypertensive medication use with the incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
DESIGN: Longitudinal population-based study.
PARTICIPANTS: Persons 43 to 86 years of age living in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, from 1988 through 1990.
METHODS: Examinations were performed every 5 years over a 20-year period. There were 9676 total person-visits over the course of the study. Status of AMD was determined from grading retinal photographs.

This study describes the vasorelaxant potential of some pure compounds isolated from Phlomis bracteosa L. marrubiin, phlomeoic acid, and two new constituents labeled as RA and RB. Six N-(1-cyanocyclohexyl)-C-phenylnitrones 4a-f (4b-f for the first time) and 22 glyoxaldinitrones 7a-v were prepared and tested for antithrombotic (p.o. administration to rats, 60 mg/kg) effects. Both classes of compounds exhibit considerable antithrombotic activities. Maximum inhibition of thrombus formation in arterioles (21%) was observed in N,N'-bis-2-phenylethylglyoxaldinitrone (7o) and N,N'-bis-4-nitrobenzylglyoxaldinitrone (7u). The compounds form only small amounts of nitric oxide in vitro by the addition of a Fe(3+)-porphyrine complex and an oxygen donor.

We report our anesthetic and perioperative management of 1000 cases of congenital heart surgery in Okayama University Medical School over the last six and a half years.
