Rectification of SEMG as a tool to demonstrate synchronous motor unit activity during vibration.

The use of surface electromyography (SEMG) in vibration studies is problematic since motion artifacts occupy the same frequency band with the SEMG signal containing information on synchronous motor unit activity. We hypothesize that using a harsher, 80-500 Hz band-pass filter and using rectification can help eliminate motion artifacts and provide a way to observe synchronous motor unit activity that is phase locked to vibration using SEMG recordings only. Multi Motor Unit (MMU) action potentials using intramuscular electrodes along with SEMG were recorded from the gastrocnemius medialis (GM) o…

The preventive effects of apolipoprotein mimetic D-4F from vibration injury-experiment in rats.

BACKGROUND: Reliable high-throughput microbial pathogen identification in human urine samples is crucial for patients with cystitis symptoms. Currently employed methods are time-consuming and could lead to unnecessary or inadequate antibiotic treatment. Purpose of this study was to assess the potential of mass spectrometry for uropathogen identification from a native urine sample. METHODS: In total, 16 urine samples having more than 105 CFU/mL were collected from clinical outpatients. These samples were analysed using standard urine culture methods, followed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing servin

Regional distribution of acoustic-based lung vibration as a function of mechanical ventilation mode.

INTRODUCTION: There are several ventilator modes that are used for maintenance mechanical ventilation but no conclusive evidence that one mode of ventilation is better than another. Vibration response imaging is a novel bedside imaging technique that displays vibration energy of lung sounds generated during the respiratory cycle as a real-time structural and functional image of the respiration process. In this study, we objectively evaluated the differences in regional lung vibration during different modes of mechanical ventilation by means of this new technology. METHODS: Vibration response …

Changes in EMG activity in the upper trapezius muscle due to local vibration exposure.

Exposure to vibration is suggested as a risk factor for developing neck and shoulder disorders in working life. Mechanical vibration applied to a muscle belly or a tendon can elicit a reflex muscle contraction, also called tonic vibration reflex, but the mechanisms behind how vibration could cause musculoskeletal disorders has not yet been described. One suggestion has been that the vibration causes muscular fatigue. This study investigates whether vibration exposure changes the development of muscular fatigue in the trapezius muscle. Thirty-seven volunteers (men and women) performed a sub-max…

Simultaneous analysis of vocal fold vibration and transglottal airflow: exploring a new experimental setup.

The purpose of this study was to develop an analysis system for studying the relationship between vocal fold vibration and the associated transglottal airflow. Recordings of airflow, electroglottography (EGG), oral air pressure, and acoustic signals were performed simultaneously with high-speed imaging at a rate of approximately 1900 frames/s. Inverse filtered airflow is compared with the simultaneous glottal area extracted from the high-speed image sequence. The accuracy of the synchronization between the camera images and the foot pedal synchronization pulse was examined, showing that potent…

Hypothenar hammer syndrome: a discrete syndrome to be distinguished from hand-arm vibration syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hypothenar hammer syndrome (HHS) is a cause of vascular insufficiency to the hand and may be manifest as Raynaud's phenomenon. The cause is trauma to the vulnerable portion of the ulnar artery as it passes over the hamate bone, which may result in thrombosis, irregularity or aneurysm formation. AIM: This review was undertaken in order to clarify the features of HHS that may differentiate it from hand-arm vibration syndrome. METHODS: A tiered review of world literature was undertaken using Medline and EMBase as the primary search engines. Fifty-two relevant articles were criticall…

Effect of vibration magnitude and repetitive exposure on finger blood flow in healthy subjects.

In order to study the effect of the magnitude of vibrations and repetitive exposure on finger blood flow, we exposed ten healthy subjects to three experimental conditions: (1) vibration of 3.16 m/s2 at 60 Hz, (2) vibration of 31.6 m/s2 at 60 Hz, and (3) no vibration, as a control. Under the experimental conditions, the right hand was exposed to 5-min vibration three times, with intervening 5-min rests. Meanwhile, the blood flows of both middle fingers were continuously measured with a blood flow meter based on the thermal diffusion method. Finger blood flow was significantly decreased in both …

Effect of prolonged neck muscle vibration on lateral head tilt in severe spasmodic torticollis.

UNLABELLED: Short term vibration of the dorsal neck muscles (10-35 s) is known to induce involuntary movements of the head in patients with spasmodic torticollis. To investigate whether neck muscle vibration might serve as a therapeutic tool when applied for a longer time interval, we compared a vibration interval of 5 seconds with a 15 minute interval in a patient with spasmodic torticollis with an extreme head tilt to the right shoulder. Head position was recorded with a two camera optoelectronic motion analyzer in six different test conditions. Vibration regularly induced a rapid change of …

Clinical studies of the vibration syndrome using a cold stress test measuring finger temperature.

Since nine years multicentre, transversal and longitudinal clinical studies on hand-arm, vibration-exposed patients are being performed in cooperation with French occupational medicine centers and social security institutions. These studies are based upon current clinical assessment and standardized, temperature-measuring cooling tests. Data acquisition uses a portable, 10-channel, micro-processor-based temperature recorder and miniature thermal sensors. Temperature is monitored at the ten finger tips continuously, before, during and after a cold stress performed in strictly controlled conditi…

Decrease of contralateral neglect by neck muscle vibration and spatial orientation of trunk midline.

Three patients with a right hemisphere lesion and marked left-sided neglect without visual field defects were asked to detect and identify s … muscles (produced by turning the trunk) as apparent lengthening of these muscles (produced by their vibration), leads to a remission of contralateral neglect. Thus, the proprioceptive input from the neck muscles, i.e. the head-on-trunk signal, appears to influence the extension of the neglected part of space in patients with neglect. The signal seems to con …

Somatosensory evoked potentials in patients with selective impairment of position sense versus vibration sense.

Ten patients with selective impairment of either position sense or vibration sense were studied with somatosensory evoked potential (SEP). Five patients with spinal cord lesion (three with MS, one with spinal cord tumor and one with spinal cord injury) lost the vibration sense below the iliac crests without impairment of the position sense. However, five patients with cerebral vascular lesions involving thalamus unilaterally showed severe impairment of position sense, though there was no asymmetry as to the vibration sense. In all these cases with spinal and cerebral lesions, SEPs showed abnor…

Heart rate variation and serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase activity in workers exposed to vibration.

Tests of autonomic nervous function were conducted on 38 workers who had been exposed to vibration [16: VWF(+) group, 22: VWF(-) group, VWF: vibration-induced white finger] and 17 workers who had not been exposed to vibration (control group). Measurements were made of R-R interval variation of the electrocardiogram at rest and during deep breathing, and serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) activity during an immersion test of the hand in 10 degrees C water. Heart-rate variation related to respiratory arrhythmia indicates parasympathetic activity, and serum DBH activity is regarded as an indic…

Variability in vibration perception threshold among sites: a potential source of error in biothesiometry.

Vibration perception threshold was measured with a biothesiometer by a single observer at both medial malleoli and both big toes in 110 diabetic patients aged 15-65 selected at random and in 64 non-diabetic subjects aged 20-65. The vibration perception threshold showed appreciable individual variation both between contralateral sites and between ipsilateral sites, differing by at least 30% between the big toes in 26 (24%) of the diabetic patients and 16 (25%) of the non-diabetic group. Variability between sites was significantly greater in the diabetics than the normal subjects. The vibration …

Inhibitory effects of combined agonist and antagonist muscle vibration on H-reflex in man.

Vibration alters human sensory motor performance. Changes in the excitability of spinal reflex mechanisms may be responsible for the majority of the observed alterations. We studied the differential effects of vibration locally applied to gastrocnemius soleus and tibialis anterior muscles separately and to both muscles simultaneously. From the results, it is deduced that combined agonist and antagonist muscle vibration may lead to summative interaction between pre- and postsynaptic inhibition at motoneuronal level. Whole-body vibration is taken to mean a combination of synchronous vibrations a…
