Vision impairs the abilities of bats to avoid colliding with stationary obstacles.

BACKGROUND: Free-flying insectivorous bats occasionally collide with stationary objects they should easily detect by echolocation and avoid. Collisions often occur with lighted objects, suggesting ambient light may deleteriously affect obstacle avoidance capabilities. We tested the hypothesis that free-flying bats may orient by vision when they collide with some obstacles. We additionally tested whether acoustic distractions, such as "distress calls" of other bats, contributed to probabilities of collision. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To investigate the role of visual cues in the collisio

Hemprich's long-eared bat (Otonycteris hemprichii) as a predator of scorpions: whispering echolocation, passive gleaning and prey selection.

Over 70% of the droppings of the gleaning bat Otonycteris hemprichii can contain scorpion fragments. Yet, some scorpions found in its desert habitat possess venom of the highest known toxicity, rendering them a very dangerous prey. In this study, we describe how O. hemprichii catches and handles scorpions, quantify its flight and echolocation behaviour in the field, investigate what sensory modality it uses to detect scorpions, and test whether it selects scorpions according to their size or toxicity. We confirmed that O. hemprichi is a whispering bat (approx. 80 dB peSPL) with short, multi-ha

GraftGIL-Net: A grafting framework on graph inductive learning networks for multi-label bird audio classification.

The automatic analysis of bird vocalizations holds significant promise for conservation monitoring, ecology, and vocal behavioural studies. Existing bird call classification methods face difficulties in detecting multiple overlapping bird vocalizations. To address this challenge, we propose GraftGIL-Net, a grafting framework based on graph inductive learning networks for bird call classification. Initially, a graph named Mel-Graph is created from the Mel-spectrogram of the audio file using a trained DeepConvNet model. This graph is then fed to the proposed GraftGIL-Net for classification. The

Association between the gut microbiome and plasma metabolites linked to vocalization-based temperament in Merino sheep.

BACKGROUND: Temperament, as a determinant of behavioural and emotional responses, has a substantial adaptive value in different environments. This study aims to investigate the association between the gut microbiota and temperament plasticity, and clarify the potential metabolic mechanism that underpins that association by running a multi-omics study in sheep. METHODS: The TrackSheep research cohort was generated using 200 healthy juvenile Merino ewes, and the rumen microbiota, plasma metabolome, and temperament phenotype was measured. RESULTS: Rumen metagenomic analysis identified 25 microb

Unique Cortical and Subcortical Activation Patterns for Different Conspecific Calls in Marmosets.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is known for its highly vocal nature, displaying a diverse range of calls. Functional imaging in marmosets has shown that the processing of conspecific calls activates a brain network that includes fronto-temporal areas. It is currently unknown whether different call types activate the same or different networks. In this study, nine adult marmosets (four females) were exposed to four common vocalizations (phee, chatter, trill, and twitter), and their brain responses were recorded using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging at 9.4 T. We fou

Nonlinear phenomena in pinnipeds: a preliminary investigation in the contact calls of northern elephant seal pups.

As acoustic markers of emotional state, nonlinear phenomena (NLP) are commonly found in the calls that young mammals produce to solicit attention from their parents. However, data are lacking to assess the ontogeny of these NLP during early development, including the extent to which these acoustic cues vary with the age and sex of the emitter. In the present study, we evaluated the occurrence of NLP in the contact calls that northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) pups emit to solicit maternal care during the three-week period of maternal dependence. We found that five types of NLP ar

Prenatal Cues of Predation Risk Modulate the Lasting Effects of Postnatal Predator Exposure in Gull Chicks.

AbstractPrenatal environmental cues can affect embryonic development to produce suitable phenotypes to match the expected conditions after birth. In gulls, parental alarm calls during incubation affect postnatal antipredator behavior, but how chicks integrate reliable prenatal and postnatal information and how this influences their development and viability remain unclear. In this study, we performed a match-mismatch experiment in which we manipulated acoustic cues of predator presence during embryonic development (adult alarm calls vs. colony noise) and the nestling period (simulated intrusio

Canine distemper outbreak and laryngeal paralysis in captive tigers (Panthera tigris).

The canine distemper virus (CDV) could infect various wildlife species worldwide. The viral infection in large felids directly impacts wildlife conservation. This study aimed to understand better the burden of CDV outbreaks in captive tiger populations in Thailand and a novel discovery of their clinical signs with a history of CDV exposure. We followed up on their infection from May 2016 to October 2020 with laboratory testing and veterinary medical records. The cumulative morbidity and mortality rates were relatively high. Moreover, 50% of the tigers survived at 2 years after infection. All s

Establishing a Mouse Model of Surgical Vocal Fold Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Animal models of vocal fold (VF) surgical injury and scar formation provide insight into the wound healing process. The purpose of this study was to establish an alternative model of surgical injury to the mouse VF using materials commonly available in most research laboratories or for purchase and to investigate wound healing of the epithelium (EP) and lamina propria (LP). METHODS: Mice were anesthetized by isoflurane gas delivery and positioned on a platform so that the larynx could be observed using a laryngoscope and dissection microscope. Unilateral VF injury was created using

Simultaneous production of two kinds of sounds in relation with sonic mechanism in the boxfish Ostracion meleagris and O. cubicus.

In fishes, sonic abilities for communication purpose usually involve a single mechanism. We describe here the sonic mechanism and sounds in two species of boxfish, the spotted trunkfish Ostracion meleagris and the yellow boxfish Ostracion cubicus. The sonic mechanism utilizes a T-shaped swimbladder with a swimbladder fenestra and two separate sonic muscle pairs. Extrinsic vertical muscles attach to the vertebral column and the swimbladder. Perpendicularly and below these muscles, longitudinal intrinsic muscles cover the swimbladder fenestra. Sounds are exceptional since they are made of two di

Developmental modulation and predictability of age-dependent vocal plasticity in adult zebra finches.

Predicting the nature of behavioral plasticity can provide insight into mechanisms of behavioral expression and control. Songbirds like the zebra finch rely on vocal signals for communication, and the performance of these signals demonstrate considerable plasticity over development. Traditionally, these signals were thought to be fixed in adulthood, but recent studies have revealed significant age-dependent changes to spectral and temporal features of song in adult songbirds. A number of age-dependent changes to song resemble acute changes to adult song performance across social contexts (e.g.

Source levels of the underwater calls of a male leopard seal.

Leopard seals (Hydrurga leptonyx) are top predators in the Antarctic ecosystem. They produce stereotyped calls as part of a stylized underwater vocal display. Understanding of their acoustic behavior is improved by identifying the amplitude of their calls. The amplitude of five types of calls (n = 50) from a single male seal were measured as broadband source levels and ranged from 153 to 177 dB re 1 μPa at 1 m. The mean source levels differed between call types, the lower frequency calls (L, D, and O) tended to have source levels 10 dB higher than the higher frequency calls (H and M). Informat

Embryologic innervation of the rat laryngeal musculature--a model for investigation of recurrent laryngeal nerve reinnervation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Optimal management of vocal fold paralysis would entail recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) reinnervation resulting in normal vocal fold motion. Unfortunately, RLN reinnervation currently results in a nonfunctional vocal fold due to synkinetic reinnervation. Therapeutic interventions that guide regenerating axons back to the appropriate muscle would prevent synkinesis and restore vocal fold and glottal function. The initial step toward developing these therapies is the elucidation of the embryologic innervation of the larynx. This study aimed to identify the age of occurrenc

Thermal damage during thulium laser dissection of laryngeal soft tissue is reduced with air cooling: ex vivo calf model study.

OBJECTIVES: The 2-microm-wavelength thulium laser has recently been shown to be an effective cutting instrument in endolaryngeal surgery, although there is increased thermal trauma as compared with the carbon dioxide laser. This study investigated temperature changes and thermal trauma during thulium laser dissection of laryngeal tissue, with and without air cooling, in an ex vivo model. METHODS: A continuous-wave thulium laser (400-microm fiber, 4-W continuous power, 4-second duration) was used to incise 10 calf vocal folds. Paired cooled and uncooled cuts were made in each fold with a derma

Model for vocalization by a bird with distensible vocal cavity and open beak.

Some birds make use of a distensible oral cavity to produce nearly pure-tone song. Songbirds such as the Northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) have a muscularly distended oropharyngeal-esophageal cavity between the top of the trachea and the open beak. The present paper analyzes the acoustics of this vocal system. It is shown that the resonance of the oropharyngeal-esophageal cavity, vented through the beak, introduces a dominant peak in the radiation efficiency, the frequency of which can be adjusted by varying the volume of the cavity, the beak gape, and perhaps the position of the tongu

Estimated communication range of social sounds used by bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, exhibit flexible associations in which the compositions of groups change frequently. We investigated the potential distances over which female dolphins and their dependent calves could remain in acoustic contact. We quantified the propagation of sounds in the frequency range of typical dolphin whistles in shallow water areas and channels of Sarasota Bay, Florida. Our results indicated that detection range was noise limited as opposed to being limited by hearing sensitivity. Sounds were attenuated to a greater extent in areas with seagrass than any other

Lesions of a telencephalic nucleus in male zebra finches: Influences on vocal behavior in juveniles and adults.

Male zebra finches learn to sing during a restricted phase of juvenile development. Song learning is characterized by the progressive modification of unstable song vocalizations by juvenile birds during development, a process that leads to the production of stereotyped vocal patterns as birds reach adulthood. The medial magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (mMAN) is a small cortical region that has been implicated in song behavior based on its neuronal projection to the High Vocal Center (HVC), a nucleus that is critical for adult vocal production and presumably also plays a role
