Tissue mitochondrial activity dictates the macrophage pool size.

Removal of cellular waste from the extracellular space is fundamental for tissue health. Because the rate of material ejected by parenchymal cells varies across tissues, we searched for mechanisms that couple waste production and removal. Here, we show that the uptake of parenchyma-released mitochondria by macrophages is prominent across organs that rely on oxidative respiration-including heart, skeletal muscle, and brown adipose tissue-and that macrophage numbers closely align with the mitochondrial activity of each of these organs. We found that the mitochondrial activity of myofibers dictat

Effect of vermicomposting process on metal content of paper mill solid waste.

In the present study the change in metal content on vermicomposting of paper mill solid waste was studied. On vermicomposting, quantity of iron, zinc and chromium found to be increased whereas quantity of aluminium, copper, manganese, nickel and lead found comparatively low. The bioaccumulation of any metal was not observed in the body of the earthworm, hence after vermicomposting, there is no harm to fishes to utilize earthworm biomass as their food. The metal content in the vermicompost prepared from the paper mill solid waste was well within the permissive limits and can therefore be safely

Steering ecological interactions in microbial chain elongation: functions and impacts of carbon- and iron-based materials.

The increasing accumulation of organic waste and the demand for renewable chemicals highlight the production of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) as an effective strategy for waste valorization. Microbial chain elongation (CE) converts short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) into MCFAs. However, its efficiency in mixed cultures is frequently limited by unstable carbon flow, restricted electron transfer, and shifts in functional microbial communities. While exogenous materials are increasingly applied to regulate CE, their mechanisms of action have not been as systematically reviewed as traditional proc

Hydrogen-rich syngas production via biomass pyrolysis catalyzed by iron co-loaded with biochar and aluminum smelting fly ash: Tar formation and component characteristics.

Biomass pyrolysis for hydrogen production is generally regarded as a crucial technological pathway to achieve the carbon neutrality goals, whereas the corresponding system efficiency and environmental friendliness are significantly constrained by the generation of tar byproducts. In this study, the iron-based carbon-aluminum (Fe/Carbon-AWA) composite catalyst was prepared via the hydrothermal carbonization method using corn straw (CS) as the carbon-based precursor, and activated aluminum smelting ash (AWA) as the support. Besides. its catalytic effect on hydrogen production performance was sys

Iron oxide nanoparticles/nanocomposites derived from steel and iron wastes for water treatment: A review.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are characterized by superior magnetic properties, high surface area to volume ratio, and active surface functional groups. These properties aid in removal of pollutants from water, through adsorption and/or photocatalysis, justifying the choice of IONPs in water treatment systems. IONPs are usually developed from commercial chemicals of ferric and ferrous salts alongside other reagents, a procedure that is costly, environmentally unfriendly and limits their mass production. On the other hand, steel and iron industries produce both solid and liquid wastes which

[Fermentation of cellulase with multiple types of Salvia miltiorrhiza residues and other solid wastes from Chinese materia medica industrialization].

The solid wastes of Chinese materia dedica industrialization represented by Salvia miltiorrhiza residues have a strong small-molecule bio-recalcitrance in the process of high-value utilization of biotransformation. Highly tolerant strains were bred to break bio-recalcitrance of Salvia miltiorrhiza residues and produce high-value added cellulose, which has a significant significance for recycling and industrial utilization of solid waste. In this study, a strain of fungus, Penicillium expansum SZ13, was found with small-molecule antibacterial substance tanshinone contained in Salvia miltiorrhiz

Green Pretreatment of Tropical Fruit Peels Using Triethylammonium Hydrogen Sulfate: A Route Toward Sustainable Biomass Valorization.

The search for biofuels has recently intensified because of the urgent need to replace fossil fuels with renewable alternatives. Investigation of biomass, especially waste, presents an excellent option for biofuel production, including second-generation (2G) ethanol, which can be produced from lignocellulosic waste. 2G Ethanol production requires pretreatment and hydrolysis of biomass to break down cellulose, generate higher amounts of sugars, and consequently increase production yields. Ionic liquids (ILs), composed of organic and inorganic ions, have low melting points, low vapor pressures,

Prevalence and concentration of Salmonella and Campylobacter in the processing environment of small-scale pastured broiler farms.

A growing niche in the locally grown food movement is the small-scale production of broiler chickens using the pasture-raised poultry production model. Limited research exists that focuses on Salmonella and Campylobacter contamination in the environment associated with on-farm processing of pasture-raised broilers. The objective of this study was to establish data relative to Salmonella and Campylobacter prevalence and concentration in soil and mortality compost resulting from prior processing waste disposal in the small-scale, on-farm broiler processing environment. Salmonella and Campylobact

Utilization of Terephthalic Acid Obtained From Textile Waste for Environmental Detection of Mitoxantrone Using Molecularly Imprinted Electrochemical Sensor Technology.

The global textile industry generates substantial amounts of waste, much of which originates from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Due to its resistance to natural degradation, PET accumulates in the environment and contributes to pollution and landfill growth. Chemical depolymerization offers a sustainable strategy for mitigating these impacts while recovering valuable monomers such as terephthalic acid (TPA) for high-value applications. In this study, five textile waste materials with varying PET content were subjected to alkaline hydrolysis using sodium hydroxide in a methanol-water medium

Pyrolysis behavior, kinetics, and thermodynamics of waste pharmaceutical blisters under CO2 atmosphere.

The disastrous impact of COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significantly increased production and use of pharmaceutical drugs, which is accompanied by the rapid generation of waste pharmaceutical blisters (WPBs). Nonetheless, its treatment has not gained appropriate attentions and a perceptible process development was not achieved. In this study, the WPBs pyrolysis in CO2 atmosphere was conducted as well as the thermodynamics and kinetics were investigated. The thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the WPBs decomposition could be divided into two stages of 25 - 365 °C and 365 - 900 °C with mas

Hydrophile-lipophile balance solid phase extraction of surface water organics: Fluorescent elution preference and overlooked fractions.

Fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) in surface water has broad implications on water quality research and operations. Solid phase extraction (SPE) is the most widely used technique to extract FDOM. However, fluorescent elution preferences by common solvents and content of quantifiable chromophores in waste fraction remain largely unknown, both quantitatively and qualitatively. In this work, the preferential selection of various types of FDOM captured by and lost from SPE as characterized by the fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) were investigated. Three elution solvents (met

Oxidation and reduction reactions of (Al/FexCr1-x)2O3 caused by CaO during thermal treatment of solid waste containing Cr.

Solid solutions of (AlxCr1-x)2O3 and (FexCr1-x)2O3 are predominant compounds containing Cr in solid waste and are frequently formed during thermal treatment of solid waste. (AlxCr1-x)2O3 and (FexCr1-x)2O3 have superior thermomechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance. However, oxidation and reduction reactions of the Cr in these solid solutions seriously affect their chemical stabilities and the environmental risks posed by the final products. In this study, first the reaction behaviors of (AlxCr1-x)2O3 and (FexCr1-x)2O3 at high temperatures were analyzed and whether the incorpor

Hydrolysis of fenamiphos and its toxic oxidation products by Microbacterium sp. in pure culture and groundwater.

A bacterium with an exceptional ability to hydrolyse fenamiphos and its toxic oxidation products fenamiphos sulfoxide and fenamiphos sulfone, all possessing POC bond was isolated from soil. Based on 16S rRNA gene determination, this bacterium was putatively identified as Microbacterium esteraromaticum. The phenols (fenamiphos phenol, sulfoxide phenol and sulfone phenol) formed during bacterial hydrolysis resisted further degradation in mineral salts medium and sterile groundwater, but were transitory in non-sterile groundwater due to the catabolism of native microorganisms. Also, the cell-free

Cocoa bean shell waste valorisation; extraction from lab to pilot-scale cavitational reactors.

The use of zero-waste processes to integrate food-waste valorisation into the circular economy equation is currently one of the hottest topics in sustainability research. This goal is still far from being fully achieved despite the release of a number of patents and papers that deal with the topic. The present work aims to valorise cocoa shells, one of the main by-product of the roasting process, in order to enhance the effective extraction of high added value compounds by means of green protocols. The high potential added value of the residual waste has been demonstrated via a direct analytic

Ecologies of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) transmission across One Health interfaces: Waste, food and changing metabolic relations in rural China.

Within the One Health framework applied to global health issues including antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and zoonoses, ecological linkages between animals, wastes, soil, water, and humans are increasingly being interpreted through the lens of pathogenic transmission. This framing problematises waste practices and cross-species contact in many parts of the Global South, where rural livelihoods are often closely integrated with farm animals and organic materials. In this study, we use metabolic relations as an analytical tool to understand One Health linkages in AMR ecologies, moving beyond tran
