Acquired learning disability for reading after left temporal lobe damage in childhood.

A 6-year-old boy developed hemorrhage in the left temporal lobe and subsequently underwent left temporal lobectomy. Afterwards, he was completely unable to learn to read or write. Psychological tests showed impairment in verbal learning and memory, with right ear and right visual field superiority in verbal perception. A Wada test showed no aphasia after right carotid injection. We conclude that damage to the speech-dominant temporal lobe resulted in the inability to learn to read or write. Despite the lesion, speech remained strongly lateralized to the left hemisphere, accounting for the righ

The psychoanalytic theory of depression. Part I--The major contributors.

This article is the first of a two part review of the psychoanalytic theory of depression. In this first part of the review the work of the major contributors to the psychoanalytic theory of depression is discussed. The writings of Abraham, Freud, Rado, Klein, Jacobson, Benedek, Bibring, Spitz, Sandler and Bowlby, among other, are presented and critically reviewed by the author. The work of these authors has been selected for this review because they have made the most seminal contributions to the development of the psychoanalytic theory of depression. Necessarily those authors whose contribut…

Referee Letters for Academic Radiology Promotion Dossiers: Benchmarking Effort.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: As part of promotion consideration, letters of evaluation are requested from external (to the candidate's institution) reviewers (referees). In some instances, internal letters are also requested. The process of responding to, reviewing the provided materials, writing the letter, and submitting it takes time. To our knowledge, there is no benchmark for the number of reference letters requested from senior faculty to or the time required to provide these letters. Our aim was to quantify this effort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 5 Professors at different institutions, in dif…

Effects of 3D-printed assistive device on daily life function in patients with neurological impairment: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: To explore the effects of customized 3D-printed assistive technology (AT) on functional performance and feasibility in patients with neurological impairment. METHODS: Patients with neurological impairment were recruited and randomized into customized 3D-printed assistive device group (group 1; n = 17) or standard device group (group 2; n = 14). The device was designed to assist their writing, spoon using, and typing. Each patient underwent 4-week intervention with the device (30 min per session, twice a week). RESULTS: We observed significant differences in shoulder abduction (p = .…

Phonological-Orthographic Deficits in Developmental Dyslexia in Three Spanish-English Bilingual Students.

Introduction The purpose of this study is to present three case studies of developmental dyslexia in dual-language learners (DLLs) and our assessment process. We identify how phonological and orthographic deficits influence reading outcomes. We review the literature on theoretical models of bilingualism and reading models of developmental dyslexia to guide the assessment process through a multicomponential approach. We point out differences in the manifestation of dyslexia in more and less transparent writing systems. We suggest that reading instruction in Spanish can afford benefits to Englis…

Does emotional disclosure about stress improve health in rheumatoid arthritis? Randomized, controlled trials of written and spoken disclosure.

Studies of the effects of disclosing stressful experiences among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have yielded inconsistent findings, perhaps due to different disclosure methods--writing or speaking--and various methodological limitations. We randomized adults with RA to a writing (n=88) or speaking (to a recorder) sample (n=93), and within each sample, to either disclosure or 1 of 2 control groups (positive or neutral events), which conducted four 20-minute, at-home sessions. Follow-up evaluations at 1, 3, and 6 months included self-reported, behavioral, physiological, and blinded phys…

Relaxation training and written emotional disclosure for tension or migraine headaches: a randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Behavioral medicine interventions that directly reduce arousal and negative emotions, such as relaxation training (RT), are conceptually different from interventions that temporarily increase negative emotions, such as written emotional disclosure (WED), but no studies have directly compared their efficacy. We compared the effects of RT and WED on people with tension or migraine headaches. METHODS: College students with either tension (n = 51) or migraine (n = 90) headaches were randomized to one of three groups: RT, WED, or a neutral writing control condition; four se…

Alexia with and without agraphia: an assessment of two classical syndromes.

BACKGROUND: Current cognitive models propose that multiple processes are involved in reading and writing. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to use linguistic analyses to clarify the cognitive dysfunction behind two classic alexic syndromes. METHODS: We report four experiments on two patients, one with alexia without agraphia following occipitotemporal lesions, and one with alexia with agraphia from a left angular gyral lesion. RESULTS: The patient with occipital lesions had trouble discriminating real letters from foils and his reading varied with word-length but not with linguistic variables such as…

Relationship between speech-sound disorders and early literacy skills in preschool-age children: impact of comorbid language impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Disorders of articulation or speech-sound disorders (SSD) are common in early childhood. Children with these disorders may be at risk for reading difficulties because they may have poor auditory, phonologic, and verbal memory skills. METHODS: We sought to characterize the reading and writing readiness of preschool children with SSD and identify factors associated with preliteracy skills. Subjects were 125 children aged 3 to 6 years with moderate to severe SSD; 53% had comorbid language impairment (LI). Reading readiness was measured with the Test of Early Reading Ability-2 (TERA) a…

The association of abnormal cerebellar function in children with developmental coordination disorder and reading difficulties.

Children with developmental coordination disorder/dyspraxia (DCD) are at high risk of reading and writing delay. The difficulties with motor skills are heterogeneous and many children have features of poor cerebellar function, reflected in problems with posture, balance and fast accurate control of movement. This study confirmed a high level of parental reporting of reading and writing delay in a clinical group of 23 children with DCD, defined on the basis of both clinical examination and standardized testing of motor function. Direct measurement of reading delay, identified still further chil…

The effects of analytical rumination, reappraisal, and distraction on anger experience.

The manner in which individuals recall negative life events has important affective consequences. The present experiment investigated the ef … ined anger, whereas participants in the remaining conditions reported decreased anger following the writing task. Our results suggest that reappraisal facilitates adaptive processing of anger-inducing memories and distraction facilitates rapid reductions in anger experience. These findings have implications for the management of clinical populations that …

Berengario da Carpi: a pioneer in neurotraumatology.

Berengario da Carpi was one of the most famous physicians of the 16th century, a recognized master of anatomy and surgery, an emblematic "Renaissance man" who combined his medical experience and engineering knowledge to design new surgical instruments, and effectively used the arts of writing and drawing to describe state-of-the-art medicine and provide illustrations of anatomical structures. His greatest contribution to medicine was to write the most important work on craniocerebral surgery of the 16th century, the Tractatus de Fractura Calvae sive Cranei (Treatise on Fractures of the Calvari…

Operationalizing Scholarship: A Scaffolded Micro-Credentialing Approach to Evidence-Based Practice Education.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate nursing students often engage in evidence-based practice (EBP) as a course requirement but have limited opportunities to develop sustained scholarly behaviors. Innovative approaches are needed to operationalize EBP competencies and promote deeper engagement. METHOD: A scaffolded micro-credentialing badge system was implemented in an undergraduate EBP course (N = 91). Six sequential badges aligned with scholarly competencies: critical appraisal, professional communication, scholarly peer review, scholarly writing, scholarly dissemination, and emerging scholar. Partici…

Uncovering the Social-Cognitive Contributors to Social Dysfunction in Borderline Personality Disorder Through Language Analysis.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by severe interpersonal dysfunction, yet the underlying nature of such dysfunction remains poorly understood. The present study adopted a behavioral approach to more objectively describe the social-cognitive contributors to interpersonal dysfunction in BPD. Participants (N = 530) completed an online survey comprising validated measures of BPD features and other problematic interpersonal traits (e.g., narcissism), as well as a writing prompt where they were asked to share their personal thoughts about relationships. Computerized language an…

From parallel sequence representations to calligraphic control: a conspiracy of neural circuits.

Calligraphic writing presents many challenges for motor control, including: learning and recall of stroke sequences; critical timing of stroke onsets and durations; fine control of grip and contact forces; and letterform invariance under size scaling, which entails fine control of stroke directions and amplitudes during recruitment and derecruitment of musculoskeletal degrees of freedom. Experimental and computational studies in behavioral neuroscience have progressed toward explaining the learning, planning, and control exercised in tasks that share features with calligraphic writing and draw…

Progressive dysgraphia in a case of posterior cortical atrophy.

Dysgraphia (agraphia) is a common feature of posterior cortical atrophy (PCA). However, detailed analyses of these spelling and writing impairments are infrequently conducted. LM is a 59-year-old woman with dysgraphia associated with PCA. She presented with a two-year history of decline in her writing and dressmaking skills. A 3D T1-weighted MRI scan confirmed selective bi-parietal atrophy, with relative sparing of the hippocampi and other cortical regions. Analyses of LM's preserved and impaired spelling abilities indicated mild physical letter distortions and a significant spelling deficit c…

Confidence without consensus? Human versus AI abstracts in urology.

OBJECTIVE: This study asked whether urologists can tell human-written abstracts apart from artificial intelligence (AI)-written abstracts when both describe the same study, and whether the answer depends on which AI model did the writing. METHODS: Fifteen published urology studies were selected. For each study, the original human-written abstract was paired with three AI-written abstracts covering the same material, produced by Claude Sonnet 4.6, GPT-5.5, and Gemini 3 Flash using identical instructions and each model's ordinary consumer settings. Because all four versions described the same s…
