The purpose of this study was to explore the value of scrotal ultrasound as a means of evaluating Bancroftian filariasis. AIM: To evaluate the usefulness of immunochromatographic test (ICT) for rapid diagnosis and surveillance of Wuchereria bancrofti infection.
METHODS: The monoclonal antibody based-ICT assay was used to detect filarial antigens in the sera from bancroftian filariasis patients.
RESULTS: 111 out of 116 bancroftian microfilaria cases showed positive ICT reaction, giving a positive rate of 95.7%. Serum samples from 12 malayian microfilaremia cases, 33 ascariasis cases, 20 schistosomiasis japonica cases and 6 trichinellosis cases were all found negative in ICT, demonstrating a specificity of 100%. …

We compared the effect of a single dose of ivermectin (100 micrograms/kg) with that of a standard course of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) (6 mg/kg) on several parameters of the host's antifilarial immune response in 60 patients with bancroftian filariasis enrolled in a double-blind drug trial. In April 1992, a safety trial was performed with a single dose of ivermectin 400 micrograms.kg-1 (IVER 400). In 37 bancroftian filariasis carriers, 6 and 12 months after IVER 400 treatment, the microfilaremia recurrences were 3.2% and 13.5%, respectively. As compared to results from other studies with diethylcarbamazine and IVER at different dosages and periodicities, the dosage of IVER 400 seems the most effective; but a yearly intake might not be sufficient.

The changes in the prevalence and distribution of bancroftian filariasis in Ceylon/Sri Lanka since Professor Kershaw's visit in 1961 show that the infection has spread over a wider area, although the microfilaria rates have decreased. New information is available on the vector, Culex quinquefasciatus, and more details are available on the animal filariae and their vectors. Dirofilaria repens infection of dogs is now a proven zoonosis in the country.

Two regimens of diethyl carbamazine (DEC) viz., 14 day and 5 day, were compared for microfilaricidal effect and side effects, in the treatment of bancroftian filariasis. The rate of successful treatment, cure rate and decrease in mf count were found to be significantly high with the 14 days regimen when assessed immediately after treatment. This paper reports the results of epidemiological surveillance in areas where filariasis has been basically eradicated and control measures no longer adopted in Shandong Province. A 3-year longitudinal surveillance in 18 villages in 5 counties and a cross-sectional survey in 13 villages of 4 counties were carried out. The results of mass treatment using low dosage diethylcarbamazine (DEC) in three small villages in West Flores, Indonesia, endemic for Brugia timori are described. We describe a patient with chyluria due to abdominal Bancroftian filariasis. The patient showed two unusual complications, an immune complex glomerulonephritis and a chronic urinary infection.
