INTRODUCTION: Cholera outbreaks in fragile settings are prone to rapid expansion. Case-area targeted interventions (CATIs) have been propose … es (MSF) plans to implement CATI in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Cameroon, Niger and Zimbabwe. This study will run in parallel to each implementation. The primary outcome is the cumulative incidence of cholera in each CATI ring. CATI will be triggered immediately on notification of a case in a new area. As with most real-world interventions, …

Evidence for Elimination (E4E) is a collaborative project established in 2012 as part of the INSPIRE (INtegrating and Scaling up PMTCT through Implementation REsearch) initiative. E4E is a cluster-randomized trial with 2 arms; Standard of care and "POC Plus" [in which point-of-care (POC) CD4 devices and related counseling support are provided]; aimed at improving retention-in-care of HIV-infected pregnant women and mothers. In November 2013, Zimbabwe adopted Option B+ for HIV-positive pregnant women under which antiretroviral treatment eligibility is no longer based on CD4 count. However, Mini…

BACKGROUND: To contain ongoing cholera outbreaks, the World Health Organization has suggested that reactive vaccination should be considered in addition to its previous control measures.
OBJECTIVES: To explore the potential impact of a hypothetical reactive oral cholera vaccination using the example of the recent large-scale cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cost-effectiveness analysis calculating the health and economic burden of the cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe with and without reactive vaccination. The primary outcome measure was incremental cost per disabili…

There were 51 maternal deaths at Harare Maternity Hospital, Zimbabwe, during 1983, 25 among patients from the greater Harare area and 26 among patients referred from peripheral hospitals or clinics. The overall maternal mortality rate among patients within the greater Harare area was 56/100 000 (including deaths related to abortion). Among 'booked' patients the maternal mortality rate was 29/100 000. Puerperal sepsis, haemorrhage, post-abortal sepsis and hypertensive disease accounted for 78.4% of the deaths. Avoidable factors, considered to be present in 34 cases (66.7%), are discussed.

The LAMMA technique (Laser Microprobe Mass Analyzer) is a valuable and powerful technique for the analysis and characterization of particulate air pollutants. At seven sites in Zimbabwe, Africa, dust particles were collected and 200 single particles were analyzed for each sampling point. The main chemical species present in the particles are Na+, K+, Cl, NO3+ and SO4(2-). Beside these, soot particles, containing carcinogenic polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons were found. Biomass burning was identified as the major source of the dust particles what is in accordance with the assumed air quality f…

OBJECTIVE: Factors that contribute to wealth related inequalities in self-rated health (SRH) and happiness remains unclear most especially in sub-Saharan countries (SSA). This study aims to explore and compare socioeconomic differentials in SRH and happiness in five SSA countries.
METHODS: Using the 2010/2014 World Values Survey (WVS), we obtained a sample of 9,869 participants of age 16 and above from five SSA countries (Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Rwanda and Zimbabwe). Socioeconomic inequalities were quantified using the concentration index. The contribution of each predictor to concentra…

Over the past decade, many ingenious, small-scale gadgets have appeared in response to problems of disaster and extreme poverty. Focusing on the LifeStraw, a water filtration device invented by the company Vestergaard Frandsen, I situate this wave of humanitarian design relative to Marianne de Laet and Annemarie Mol's classic article on the Zimbabwe Bush Pump. The LifeStraw shares the Bush Pump's principle of technical minimalism, as well as its ethical desire to improve the lives of communities. Unlike the pump, however, the straw defines itself through rather than against market logic, accep…

Twenty-three cases of advanced abdominal pregnancy were managed at Harare Hospital, Zimbabwe, over a 10 year period. The incidence was 1 in 9500 total deliveries and 1 in 60 ectopic pregnancies. There were no maternal deaths but perinatal mortality was 83%. Of the 5 liveborn infants, 4 had pressure deformities and 3 were small for gestational age. There was one neonatal death due to pulmonary hypoplasia. Diagnosis is difficult and is often first suggested by failed induction of labour in a case of presumed intrauterine death. Abnormal presentation of the fetus, displacement of the cervix and a…
