Red cell antibodies arising from solid organ transplants.

RBC antibodies arising from transplanted organs and directed against recipient RBCs represent a well-established immunohematologic complication of solid organ transplantation. In ABO-unmatched organs, the frequency and severity of graft antibodies and hemolysis generally increase with the size (lymphoid content) of the organ, from kidney to liver to heart-lung transplants. In the cases reviewed here, the frequency of hemolysis increased in cyclosporine-treated kidney transplant recipients and O-to-A liver transplant recipients and decreased in group AB liver transplant recipients and kidney tr

Possible changes in the frequency of the human ABO blood groups in Iceland due to smallpox epidemics selection.

The hypothesis is put forward that the low frequency of A and high frequency of O blood group genes in the Icelandic human population is the result of a selective disadvantage of A during severe smallpox epidemics. The hypothesis is supported by data from India in 1965-6, which show a marked selective effect of a smallpox epidemic against the phenotypes A and AB (Vogel & Chakravartti, 1971). The conclusion is drawn that the present-day ABO blood group gene frequencies of the Icelandic population should be used with reservation as markers in the study of the origin of the Icelanders.

Epidemiology of trophoblast disease in Africa--Lagos.

Trophoblast neoplasm cases at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in the two-year period, 1980-1981, have been reviewed. An apparent increased incidence of 1 in 184 deliveries for hydatidiform mole and 1 in 299 deliveries for choriocarcinoma has been noted when compared with a previous review. An association of hydatidiform mole with age and parity was observed in this study. Among patients with hydatidiform mole, 27 percent also had pseudotoxemia and in one case this progressed to eclampsia. In the case of choriocarcinoma, increased parity appears to be associated with a higher mortality.

Serum alkaline phosphatase in adult coeliac disease.

The total alkaline phosphatase levels were determined in 118 patients with adult coeliac disease, 65 of whom had evidence of osteomalacia. The secretor and blood group status, intestinal isoenzyme, and liver alkaline phosphatase played no significant part in the levels of serum alkaline phosphatase found. There was a significant correlation between the levels of serum alkaline phosphatase and the presence of osteomalacia.

ABO blood types can play a role in determining the aggressiveness of thyroid cancer in adult patients: a single-centre retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy. Previous research has linked the ABO blood group system to the risk and progression of different types of cancer. However, the association between specific blood groups and thyroid cancer risk and disease aggressiveness remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between ABO blood groups, thyroid cancer risk, aggressiveness, and metastasis risk. METHODS: All adult patients who underwent thyroidectomy in our centre between January 2012 and January 2021 were included. A total of 569 files were revie

Low titer group O whole blood and risk of RhD alloimmunization: Rationale for use in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Prehospital low-titer group O whole blood (LTOWB) used for patients with life-threatening hemorrhage is often RhD positive. The most important complication following RhD alloimmunization is hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). Preceding clinical use of RhD positive LTOWB, we estimated the risk of HDFN due to LTOWB prehospital transfusion in the Finnish population. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We collected data on prehospital transfusions in Tampere and Helsinki University Hospital areas. Using the mean of reported alloimmunization rates in trauma studies (24%) and a hig

Association between blood type and pulmonary thromboembolism in patients with gastric cancer: A retrospective cohort study.

ObjectiveGastric cancer is associated with an increased risk of pulmonary thromboembolism. Although the ABO blood group system is a known thrombotic risk factor, its role in gastric cancer-associated pulmonary thromboembolism remains unclear.MethodsThis retrospective study analyzed 1488 gastric cancer patients to assess the association between ABO blood type and pulmonary thromboembolism. Cox proportional hazards models were used to identify independent predictors, and Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to compare cumulative incidence.ResultsPulmonary thromboembolism incidence was highest in the A

ABO blood groups are not associated to gestational diabetes mellitus in Mexican women.

OBJECTIVES: Some studies show an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus for ABO blood groups. Others find a lower risk or do not identify any association. Inconsistencies may be due to the heterogeneity in the control for confounding variables. We determined the association between ABO blood groups and gestational diabetes mellitus in Mexican women, controlling for gravidity and age, pre-pregnancy body mass index, fasting glucose at the first trimester, and first-degree relative with diabetes. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted from February 2019 to December 2021 in Monte

Prenatal ABO/RHD Genotyping: A New Paradigm to Allow for Fresh Whole Blood for Cardiopulmonary Bypass in the Immediate Newborn Period.

Compared to standard component therapy, fresh whole blood (FWB) offers potential benefits to neonates undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in the context of open cardiac surgery: decreased blood loss and subsequent risk of volume overload, improved coagulation status, higher platelet counts during and following CPB, circumvention of limited vascular access, and significantly reduced donor exposures. Obtaining FWB, however, entails 2-5 days of preparation, which often precludes its availability for neonates requiring CPB in the immediate newborn period. Using a multidisciplinary approach and

ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation: impact of apheresis on graft and patient survival in recipients with low isoagglutinin titer.

ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation carries a high risk of acute antibody-mediated rejection due to the presence of isoagglutinins. To mitigate this risk, current protocols recommend performing apheresis before transplantation. Our objective was to evaluate outcomes in ABOi recipients with low isoagglutinin titers, comparing those who did and did not undergo pre-transplant apheresis. We conducted a multicenter study including recipients of ABOi kidney transplants between 2012 and 2022. A total of 78 patients with baseline isoagglutinin titers ≤1:8 were included; 41 received pre-tran

Associations between blood donors, component modifications, and the alloimmunization of transfusion recipients.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have evaluated transfusion recipient variables impacting red blood cell (RBC) alloimmunization, but few focused on potentially modifiable blood donor or blood component variables. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from the Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study (REDS)-III, which links donor, component, and patient data in an integrated database, were accessed. For any given RBC unit with sufficient blood donor and component data, we determined if the transfusion recipient experienced a new RBC alloimmunization event ("case") within 16 weeks of the transfusion

Literature review of passenger lymphocyte syndrome following renal transplantation and two case reports.

Passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS) is an immune-mediated hemolysis. It occurs following ABO blood group mismatched solid organ and/or bone marrow transplantation between donor and recipient. We report two cases of PLS occurring after renal transplantation. Both recipients received live related kidney transplants; one from his mother and the other from his brother. The direction of blood group transfer, from donor to recipient, was O Rh D+ to A Rh D+ in both cases. Approximately 12 days after transplantation, both recipients showed a rapid fall in their hemoglobin levels with no identifiable b

ABO-incompatible heart transplantation: crossing the immunological barrier.

Due to the shortage of organ donors, heart transplantation cannot be offered to many infants with end-stage heart failure; this issue leads to mortality rates of 30-50% in patients in the paediatric age group awaiting operation. ABO-incompatible heart transplantation has been performed safely with no particular or invasive preparatory procedures other than plasma exchange during cardiopulmonary bypass for removing preformed antibodies, with no reports of hyperacute rejection. We report our first clinical experience of heart transplantation on a 2-month-old-infant (blood group O), diagnosed wit

Efficacy of Uncross-Matched Type O Packed Red Blood Cell Transfusion to Traumatic Shock Patients: a Propensity Score Match Study.

A new blood bank system was established in our trauma bay, which allowed immediate utilization of uncross-matched type O packed red blood cells (UORBCs). We investigated the efficacy of UORBC compared to that of the ABO type-specific packed red blood cells (ABO RBCs) from before the bank was installed. From March 2016 to February 2017, data from trauma patients who received UORBCs in the trauma bay were compared with those of trauma patients who received ABO RBCs from January 2013 to December 2015. Propensity matching was used to overcome retrospective bias. The primary outcome was 24-hour mor
