Association between childhood allergic disease, psychological comorbidity, and injury requiring medical attention.

BACKGROUND: Children with allergic disease have multiple risk factors for accidental injuries. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of injuries requiring medical treatment in US children with allergic disease. METHODS: The authors analyzed data from the 2007 to 2008 National Survey of Children's Health, including a nationally representative sample of 27,556 children 0 to 5 years old. RESULTS: The prevalence (95% confidence interval [CI]) of at least 1 allergic disease was 29.4% (28.0-30.8); 6.6% (5.8-7.4) were diagnosed with asthma, 15.0% (14.0-16.0) with eczema, 11.6% (10.6-12.6) with ha…

Unintentional Injuries Requiring Medical Attention in Low-Income and Middle-Income Countries: Evidence from Nationally Representative surveys in 12 Countries.

BACKGROUND: Despite a high burden of injuries in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), a lack of empirical evidence on mechanism, location, and distribution of unintentional injuries requiring medical attention (hereafter injuries) hinders informed health system policy development. METHODS: Using individual-level data from nationally representative surveys conducted in LMICs between 2014-2019, we describe the weighted annual prevalence of non-fatal injuries, their mechanisms, environments in which they occur, and characteristics of people injured, in individuals aged 15-64 years. [Traumatic pulmonary pseudocyst].

Traumatic pulmonary pseudocysts (TPPs) are rare but clinically relevant complications of thoracic trauma, often misdiagnosed due to their non-specific presentation and resemblance to other cavitary pulmonary lesions. We report the case of a 26-year-old male presenting with delayed symptoms following a fall, ultimately diagnosed with multiple TPPs via thoracic CT scan. The patient experienced a favourable evolution with conservative management, including aerosolized tranexamic acid for minor hemoptysis. This case highlights the importance of thorough clinical history-taking and imaging in estab

Orofacial manifestations of high-rise syndrome in cats: a retrospective study of 84 cases.

Medical records of cats with high-rise trauma were reviewed to document the prevalence and clinical manifestations of orofacial injury. Cats were presented over a 10-year period from January 2000 to December 2009. Signalment, weight, number of stories fallen, and survival data were recorded in 84 cats and physical examination findings were obtained from 83 cats. Fourteen of these cats were examined by veterinarians of the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service. Mean age was 37-months. Mean distance fallen was 2.65 stories, and in the majority of cases the substrate the cat fell on was not recorded

Shock attenuation of various protective devices for prevention of fall-related injuries of the forearm/hand complex.

BACKGROUND: Attenuation of the peak impact force is essential in any protective devices for prevention of fall-related injuries. HYPOTHESIS: Common wrist guards have limited effectiveness because of the multifaceted nature of wrist injury mechanisms, and other modalities may provide enhanced shock-absorbing functions. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: A free-fall device was constructed using a mechanical surrogate to simulate falling impact. At 4 different falling heights, 5 different hand conditions were tested: bare hand, a generic-brand wrist guard, a Sorbothane glove,

Traumatic avulsion of the triceps brachii.

Traumatic avulsion of the triceps brachii tendon is a rare injury. Clinical diagnosis shows that elbow extension against gravity is not possible. Radiologically, the lateral elbow may show the presence of flecks of avulsed osseous material from the olecranon ("flake sign"), which is almost pathognomonic of this lesion. The authors of the present study present a case of avulsion fracture treated with the attachment of bone suture anchors.

Accidental Trisodium Phosphate [Na3PO4] (TSP) Ingestion in a Child.

BACKGROUND: It is not uncommon for a child to present to the hospital due to accidental ingestions, and oftentimes they are the result of a child accessing household cleaning or home improvement products. Typically, the upper gastrointestinal tract is the site of initial tissue insult and prognosis of these cases depends on a variety of factors, including the ingested substance, injury extent, and assessments and treatments rendered. Possible post-ingestion complications that make management difficult may include mediastinitis, hemodynamic instability, gastrointestinal perforation, erosion and

Accidental central venous catheter cannulation into aberrant arterial anatomy requiring endovascular intervention.

Central venous catheter placement continues to be an extremely common procedure throughout hospital systems. Although ultrasound guidance can mitigate some placement risks, misplacement of lines into neighboring structures, such as arteries, remains an unfortunate complication. In this report, we will discuss an 83-year-old female with aberrant left subclavian artery and right sided arch, which provided for successful stent graft coverage of arterial injury secondary to accidental subclavian artery cannulation with a central venous catheter with preservation of the right common carotid artery

An unusual case of death using a compacting machine.

In the large series of forensic injury, death from accidental me-chanical asphyxiation in adults is rare and is usually secondary to suffocation, aspiration, strangulation caused by entrapment of clothing in machinery (deaths at work) or asphyxiation in the course of erotic maneuvers. Compression asphyxia is a form of violent mechanical asphyxia in which the asphyxiated insult is produced by means of a compression and constriction mechanism of the thoracic cage. The authors report an unusual case of asphyxiated death from chest com-pression resulting from the action of a compacting machine, wh

Tracheal Transection-A Novel Airway Management.

Background  Traumatic injury of the trachea is rare, especially complete transection. Its operative revision requires an interdisciplinary approach. Case Description  We hereby present a rare case of complete transection of the trachea by accident. To stabilize the patient and to allow for safe surgery, veno-venous extracorporeal support was initiated via the subclavian artery and the femoral vein. The patient was subsequently operated, and the trachea re-anastomosed with favorable outcome. Conclusion  This rare case of an accidental transection of the trachea shows the importance of a good em

Always read the label: a case report of a penile burn.

A 32-year-old man presented with chemical burns to his penis following accidental application of depilatory cream to the area. The gentleman consequently sustained deep dermal burns to his penis, experiencing genital swelling and dysuria. This injury was managed conservatively in our burns unit and the patient was discharged shortly after. We present this unusual case of penile burns which has not previously been described in the literature despite depilatory creams being inexpensive and relatively easy to use, and subsequently popular choice amongst available hair removal options.

Femoral and tibial fractures in a child with myelomeningocele.

Femoral and tibial fractures can occur from accidents, child abuse or pathological causes. It is often very difficult to distinguish the cause among those cases. Radiological diagnosis may be needed for clinicians and medical examiners in order to assist determining the reason of fractures. In this report, we submit a case with femoral and tibial fractures associated with myelomeningocele. This patient was diagnosed as child abuse by clinicians. On review it was decided that her fractures were not because of non-accidental injury. The values of bone mineral density of the upper limb were low a

Evaluation of physical abuse in children.

Family physicians who are involved in the care of children are likely to encounter child abuse and should be able to recognize its common presentations. A history that is inconsistent with the patient's injuries is the hallmark of physical abuse. A pattern of physical findings, including bruises and fractures in areas unlikely to be accidentally injured, patterned bruises from objects, and circumferential burns or bruises in children not yet mobile, should be viewed as suspicious for child abuse. Family physicians who suspect physical abuse are mandated to make a report to the state child prot

[Identification and preservation of the parathyroid glands in thyroidectomy using methylene blue].

The risk to the parathyroids in thyroid surgery is widely known. Postoperative parathyroid insufficiency occurs because of accidental devascularization of one or several glands, or infarction due to manipulation, or resection within the thyroid lobe. The prevention of this complication requires a careful surgical technique which limits any injury of the parathyroids. A simple, safe and cheap method to improve the identification of these glands is the preoperative intravenous infusion of methylene blue, that results in a distinct staining of the parathyroids. The authors describe their experien

Can Hemorrhagic Stroke Genetics Help Forensic Diagnosis in Pediatric Age (<5 Years Old)?

When stroke occurs in pediatric age, it might be mistakenly interpreted as non-accidental head injury (NAHI). In these situations, a multidisciplinary approach is fundamental, including a thorough personal and familial history, along with accurate physical examination and additional investigations. Especially when the clinical picture is uncertain, it is important to remember that certain genetic conditions can cause bleeding inside the brain, which may resemble NAHI. Pediatric strokes occurring around the time of birth can also be an initial sign of undiagnosed genetic disorders. Hence, it is

Case Report: Copper sulphate related hemophagocytosis with lymphohistiocytosis.

The accidental, suicidal, and homicidal toxicities of copper sulfate have been extensively documented. The later stages of the disease demonstrate signs of systemic toxicity, characterized by intravascular hemolysis, oliguric renal failure, convulsions, and circulatory collapse. Despite the extensive description of life-threatening intravascular hemolysis, Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) related to copper sulfate poisoning has not been described. A 45-year-old male presented with accidental consumption of copper sulfate. Laboratory evaluation revealed leukocytosis, intravascular hemol

Anesthetic management of catheter-based patent ductus arteriosus closure in neonates weighing <3 kg: A Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: The patent ductus arteriosus is a cardiac lesion commonly found in premature neonates. Though surgical closure via thoracotomy is the most definitive treatment option, it is associated with significant morbidity. New catheter-based closure options offer a potentially safer alternative treatment, even in premature neonates. However, no literature reports the anesthetic techniques, challenges, and risks associated with this procedure in this population. AIM: This study documents the anesthetic challenges and potential complications associated with the management of catheter-based cl

Postdischarge Cause-of-Death Analysis of Combat-Related Burn Patients.

Combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have resulted in up to 8.8% of combat-related casualties suffering burns. From World War I through Desert Storm, burns have been associated with approximately 4% of the combat-related deaths. Experiencing a blast injury and exposure to killing and death while deployed has been shown to increase suicide risk. Although several studies of military populations have investigated risk factors for death among burn patients during the acute phase, no studies have reported mortality rates, cause-of-death, or the prevalence of suicide after hospital discharge.
