A circuit for detection of interaural time differences in the nucleus laminaris of turtles.

The physiological hearing range of turtles is approximately 50-1000 Hz, as determined by cochlear microphonics ( Wever and Vernon, 1956a). These low frequencies can constrain sound localization, particularly in red-eared slider turtles, which are freshwater turtles with small heads and isolated middle ears. To determine if these turtles were sensitive to interaural time differences (ITDs), we investigated the connections and physiology of their auditory brainstem nuclei. Tract tracing experiments showed that cranial nerve VIII bifurcated to terminate in the first-order nucleus magnocellularis

The interaural time difference pathway: a comparison of spectral bandwidth and correlation sensitivity at three anatomical levels.

Temporal differences between the two ears are critical for spatial hearing. They can be described along axes of interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural correlation, and their processing starts in the brainstem with the convergence of monaural pathways which are tuned in frequency and which carry temporal information. In previous studies, we examined the bandwidth (BW) of frequency tuning at two stages: the auditory nerve (AN) and inferior colliculus (IC), and showed that BW depends on characteristic frequency (CF) but that there is no difference in the mean BW of these two structures w

Informational masking of complex tones in dyslexic children.

In complex auditory scenes, perceiving a given target signal is often complicated by the presence of competing maskers. In addition to energetic masking (EM), which arises because of peripheral interferences between target and maskers at the cochlear level, informational masking (IM), which takes place at a more central level, is also responsible for the difficulties encountered in typical ecological auditory environments. While recent research has led to mixed results regarding a potential speech-perception-in-noise deficit in dyslexic children, most of them actually investigated EM situation

Blue whales respond to simulated mid-frequency military sonar.

Mid-frequency military (1-10 kHz) sonars have been associated with lethal mass strandings of deep-diving toothed whales, but the effects on endangered baleen whale species are virtually unknown. Here, we used controlled exposure experiments with simulated military sonar and other mid-frequency sounds to measure behavioural responses of tagged blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) in feeding areas within the Southern California Bight. Despite using source levels orders of magnitude below some operational military systems, our results demonstrate that mid-frequency sound can significantly affect b

Acoustic characteristics of voiceless bellowing typical of bovine rabies.

The use of auditory data visualization techniques was useful for distinguishing voiceless bellows of a rabid cow from the bellows of estrus-oriented cows, because rabid cows created two distinct sounds with a very short silence between inhalation and exhalation of the respiratory cycle. The auditory visualization techniques as a diagnostic tool may have the potential to serve as a basis for an Internet-based application for the early diagnosis of rabies.

Adults with dyslexia are impaired in categorizing speech and nonspeech sounds on the basis of temporal cues.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by severe reading and spelling difficulties that are persistent and resistant to the usual didactic measures and remedial efforts. It is well established that a major cause of these problems lies in poorly specified representations of speech sounds. One hypothesis states that this phonological deficit results from a more fundamental deficit in auditory processing. Despite substantial research effort, the specific nature of these auditory problems remains debated. A first controversy concerns the speech specificity of the auditory processing problems: Can

Neural signature of the conscious processing of auditory regularities.

Can conscious processing be inferred from neurophysiological measurements? Some models stipulate that the active maintenance of perceptual representations across time requires consciousness. Capitalizing on this assumption, we designed an auditory paradigm that evaluates cerebral responses to violations of temporal regularities that are either local in time or global across several seconds. Local violations led to an early response in auditory cortex, independent of attention or the presence of a concurrent visual task, whereas global violations led to a late and spatially distributed response

Estimating subglottal pressure via airflow interruption with auditory masking.

Current noninvasive measurement of subglottal pressure using airflow interruption often produces inconsistent results due to the elicitation of audio-laryngeal reflexes. Auditory feedback could be considered as a means of ensuring measurement accuracy and precision. The purpose of this study was to determine if auditory masking could be used with the airflow interruption system to improve intrasubject consistency. A prerecorded sample of subject phonation was played on a loop over headphones during the trials with auditory masking. This provided subjects with a target pitch and blocked out dis

Auditory integration training and other sound therapies for autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a heterogeneous group of disorders encompassing Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, Semantic-Pragmatic disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Auditory integration therapy (AIT) was developed as a technique for improving abnormal sound sensitivity in individuals with behavioural disorders including autism. Other sound therapies bearing similarities to AIT include the Tomatis Method and Samonas Sound Therapy. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of AIT or other methods of sound therapy in individuals with

The mechanical waveform of the basilar membrane. IV. Tone and noise stimuli.

Analysis of mechanical cochlear responses to wide bands of random noise clarifies many effects of cochlear nonlinearity. The previous paper [de Boer and Nuttall, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 107, 1497-1507 (2000)] illustrates how closely results of computations in a nonlinear cochlear model agree with responses from physiological experiments. In the present paper results for tone stimuli are reported. It was found that the measured frequency response for pure tones differs little from the frequency response associated with a noise signal. For strong stimuli, well into the nonlinear region, tones have t

Effects of different types of light touch on postural sway.

When a standing person applies a light finger touch to an external stable object, postural sway is reduced. We tested a hypothesis that two factors related to touch can induce this effect, the presence of a stable reference point and the modulation of contact forces leading to tissue deformation. Force platform signals were analyzed while subjects stood quietly with or without additional light touch to an external object (contact forces under 1 N). The point of touch on the body was manipulated. We also investigated the effects of active touch vs fixation of a finger at a point in external spa

Distribution of rate-intensity function types in chick cochlear nerve after exposure to intense sound.

Intense sound exposure to the chick ear produces cochlear damage and losses in auditory function. At twelve days post exposure there is considerable structural repair, although a defect on the sensory epithelium remains in the form of an incompletely healed 'patch' lesion. Auditory function significantly recovers 12 days after the exposure, but it, too, is incomplete. In this paper we describe the relationship between stimulus intensity and cochlear nerve discharge rate (the rate-intensity function) in two groups of chicks. One is exposed to damaging sound levels but allowed 12 days to recover

Morphometric changes in the chick nucleus magnocellularis following acoustic overstimulation.

The present investigation considered the effects of cochlear damage caused by exposure to intense sound on the nucleus magnocellularis of the chick. Neonatal chicks exposed to intense sound were separated into four groups with post-exposure recovery durations of 0, 15, 27, and 43 days. Four age-matched, non-exposed control groups were also formed. At each recovery interval, the control and exposed birds were sacrificed and their brains prepared for paraffin embedding. The brain stem region containing the nucleus magnocellularis (NM) was serially sectioned in the coronal plane. All sections con

Relations between notched-noise suppressed TEOAE and the psychoacoustical critical bandwidth.

Narrow-band transitory evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) were recorded for nine normal hearing subjects in the presence of a broadband tone complex suppressor. Introducing a spectral notch at the frequency of the narrow-band stimulus causes the suppression effect to decrease, the more so the wider the notch. This decrease in suppression permits an estimate of the size of one critical band. One advantage of this approach is that no active participation of the subjects is required. The estimated critical bandwidth is then compared with independent estimates based on a simultaneous masking exp

[Biochemical bases for the antiseizure role of the pineal gland].

Metabolism of serotonin was studied in pineal gland of Wistar rats with low and high rate of audio excitability as well as in the Krushinsky-Molodkina rat population genetically predisposed to audio-dependent convulsions. Intensive turnover of serotonin via N-acetyl serotonin into melatonin was found in pineal gland of rats insensitive to sensory stimulus, whereas the rate of this response was decreased in the gland tissue of animals sensitive to audio effects as well as inhibition of serotonin turnover into melatonin was noticed in pineal gland of rats predisposed genetically to audio-depende

Effects of contralateral sound on auditory-nerve responses. II. Dependence on stimulus variables.

The suppression by moderate-level contralateral sound of auditory-nerve-fiber responses to ipsilateral stimuli at the characteristic frequency (CF) was studied in barbiturate-anesthetized cats. The dependence of suppression strength on ipsilateral and contralateral stimulus variables, including level, frequency, bandwidth, and timing relationships, was investigated. The principal findings were: (1) Contralateral-sound suppression is greatest when the ipsilateral stimulus level is within the dynamic range of the unit. (2) When the contralateral stimuli are tones, suppression is greatest when th

Effects of contralateral sound on auditory-nerve responses. I. Contributions of cochlear efferents.

The response properties of single auditory-nerve fibers in barbiturate-anaesthetized cats were recorded with and without simultaneous presentation of sound to the contralateral ear. The tendons to the middle ear muscles on both sides were cut before all experiments, and contralateral stimuli were restricted to levels below the threshold for crosstalk to the ipsilateral ear. Contralateral tones and broad-band noise were found to suppress the responses of auditory-nerve afferents to ipsilateral tones at their characteristic frequency (CF), but not to tones off CF. The suppression due to contrala

Loudness adaptation: real or illusory.

There is general agreement that, except at low sensation levels, the loudness of a continuous pure tone does not appear to change with time. By contrast, using a simultaneous dichotic loudness balancing procedure (SDLB) a substantial fall in loudness can be revealed. As a result it has been held that the latter does not represent a loudness loss in real terms but is a manifestation of some form of central binaural interaction possibly involving localization mechanisms. In two studies reported here, one involving a loudness scaling procedure using as a standard a reference tone of 65 dB (HL) an

Extra-tympanic electrocochleography.

A non-invasive technique for recording the cochlear action potential in adults without recourse to sedation or local anaesthesia is presented. This technique has been assessed in two ways: (1) A group of normal subjects was tested to obtain distributions of response amplitude and latency as functions of stimulus intensity. (2) A group of patients with Meniere's disease was tested with trans- and extra-tympanic electrocochleography to compare the intensity amplitude functions and wave-forms obtained from the two methods. On the basis of this study the use of extra-tympanic electrocochleography
