Comparing the function of the corticospinal system in different species: organizational differences for motor specialization?

An appreciation of the comparative functions of the corticospinal tract is of direct relevance to the understanding of how results from animal models can advance knowledge of the human motor system and its disorders. Two critical functions of the corticospinal tract are discussed: first, the role of descending projections to the dorsal horn in the control of sensory afferent input, and second, the capacity of direct cortico-motoneuronal projections to support voluntary execution of skilled hand and finger movements. We stress that there are some important differences in corticospinal projectio

Differential effects of activation of peripheral and spinal tachykinin neurokinin(3) receptors on the micturition reflex in rats.

PURPOSE: We clarified the roles of tachykinin neurokinin (NK)3 receptors in the bladder or spinal cord for control of the micturition reflex in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In female rats under urethane anesthesia repetitive bladder contractions were elicited by saline infusion into the bladder through intravesical bladder catheters. The effects of peripheral receptor activation were first examined by topical application of the tachykinin NK3 receptor agonist [MePhe]-NKB (Calbiochem, Darmstadt, Germany) in normal rats and rats pretreated with capsaicin (Sigma Chemical Co., St. Louis, Missouri

Capsaicin in albino rats prevents contralateral testis from the damaging effects posed by ipsilateral testis that underwent torsion.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of capsaicin, a powerful neurotoxin selective to afferent nerves, on contralateral testicular damage in ipsilateral testicular torsion. METHODS: Forty male albino rats were randomly allocated into five groups. No operation was performed in group one. After intraperitoneal administration of 0.9% NaCl, rats underwent a sham operation in group 2 and testicular torsion in group 3. In groups 4 and 5 rats underwent sham operation and testicular torsion, respectively after intraoperitoneal capsaicin injection. Contralateral testes were harvested on the fifteenth day

Neural circuits in swallowing and abdominal vagal afferent-mediated lower esophageal sphincter relaxation.

The purpose of this review is to identify the medullary subnuclei that house neural circuits for lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxation. LES relaxation may occur as a component of primary peristalsis elicited by superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) afferent stimulation, secondary peristalsis elicited by esophageal distention or as a component of belch reflex, and transient LES relaxation elicited by gastric vagal afferent stimulation. In mice, SLN stimulation at 10 Hz elicited complete swallowing reflex, including pharyngeal and esophageal peristalsis, and LES relaxation. SLN stimulation at 5 H

Origins of spontaneous and noxious stimuli-evoked miniature EPSCs in substantia gelatinosa.

The origins of spontaneous and noxious stimuli-evoked glutamatergic miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) in substantia gelatinosa (SG) neurons were investigated by using whole-cell voltage-clamp technique on adult rat spinal cord slice. The properties of mEPSCs of SG neurons from rats either neonatally capsaicin-treated or sciatic nerve ligated showed no difference from those of intact SG neurons, indicating independence of spontaneous mEPSCs on primary afferent fibers. In the presence of tetrodotoxin (TTX), capsaicin, which noxiously stimulated fine primary afferent fibers, cau

Sensory dysfunction in HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis. A comprehensive neurophysiological study.

BACKGROUND: Direct lateral (transpsoas) lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) reportedly achieves union by 1 year postoperatively, but how soon fusion occurs after these minimally invasive procedures is unclear. This study investigated LLIF fusion progression at 6 months and 1 year in a large-scale cohort using bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) graft and examined risk factors associated with failed fusion. METHODS: Patients undergoing primary LLIF with a single surgical team from 2015 through 2016 with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) iimplants and BMP graft were identified. Retrospective chart review inc

The subjective visual horizontal after stapedotomy: evidence for an increased resting activity in otolithic afferents.

The subjective visual horizontal (SVH) was measured by means of a small rotatable luminous line in darkness in the upright body position and at 10, 20 and 30 degrees of body tilt to the right and left prior to, and during a follow-up period after, stapedotomy in 12 patients with otosclerosis. In the acute stage after surgery, SVH in the upright body position was significantly tilted away from the operated side. In addition, the perception of roll tilt towards the operated side (Kop) was significantly increased after stapedotomy, while the perception of roll tilt towards the healthy side (Khe)

Sensory and motor components of reproductive behavior: pathways and plasticity.

Reproductive behavior in most mammalian species consists of a highly stereotyped pattern of movements, is elicited by specific sensory stimuli and is sex steroid dependent. The present paper describes a concept of the pathways in the midbrain, brainstem and spinal cord which control the receptive posture of the female cat. The midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG), which is an important structure in the Emotional Motor System (EMS), receives direct input from a distinct group of neurons in the dorsal horn of the lumbosacral cord. This cell group overlaps with the location of pelvic and to lesser

The spatial relationships among cutaneous, muscle sensory and motoneuron axons during development of the chick hindlimb.

Previous studies have suggested that interactions with other axons are important in sensory axon pathfinding in the developing chick hindlimb. Yet the nature of these interactions remains unknown, in part because information about the spatial relationships among the different kinds of axons is lacking. To obtain this information, we combined retrograde axonal tracing with an immunofluorescent labelling approach that distinguishes between sensory and motoneuron axons. This allowed us to follow the trajectories of sensory axons having a known destination, while also identifying their neighbors.

[Responsive property of afferent units in the caudal nerve of streptozotocin-diabetic rats].

In the present study, the responsive properties of afferent units in caudal nerve of streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats were investigated. It was found that some of the C and A delta units spontaneously discharged and their mechanical threshold was decreased significantly in diabetic rats. The response of the C units of diabetic and control rats to a 1 min sustained mechanical stimulus of threshold strength was similar, whereas, discharge frequencies during sustained suprathreshold mechanical stimulus were significantly greater in the C units of diabetic rats. After removal of threshol

Thermosensitivity of acutely axotomized sensory nerve fibers.

1. Thermosensitivity of axotomized myelinated and unmyelinated fibers in the sural nerve was examined in anesthetized rats within 24 h after nerve ligation and transection. Activity in single fibers was recorded extracellularly from small filaments dissected from the nerve approximately 20-30 mm proximal to the lesioned site. Cold and warm stimuli were applied to the ligated and cut nerve end or 5-10 mm further proximal. 2. Among 871 unmyelinated fibers tested, 40 were excited by cooling of the cut and ligated nerve end (8-15 degrees C), 44 were excited by warming (35-65 degrees C), and 16 wer

Changes in excitability and impulse transmission following prolonged repetitive activity in normal subjects and patients with a focal nerve lesion.

The present study was undertaken to document the excitability changes produced by prolonged high-frequency trains of impulses and to determine whether these changes in excitability would impair neural transmission in cutaneous afferents of patients with focal slowing of conduction across the carpal tunnel. A submaximal test stimulus was used to measure the changes in axonal excitability following trains of supramaximal stimuli delivered at 200 Hz for 30 s, 1 min or 2 min. These trains produced a prolonged depression in excitability in normal axons with gradual recovery to control levels over 2

A quantitative assessment of presynaptic inhibition of Ia afferents in spastics. Differences in hemiplegics and paraplegics.

Soleus H-reflex facilitation evoked by a supramaximal conditioning stimulation to the femoral nerve was investigated in 28 healthy control subjects and 35 spastic patients of whom 17 were paraplegics with bilateral spinal cord lesion and 18 were hemiplegics with unilateral cerebral lesion. Heteronymous facilitation from quadriceps to soleus was measured 0.4 ms after onset, while the monosynaptic Ia excitation is still uncontaminated by any non-monosynaptic effect and can be used to assess ongoing presynaptic inhibition on Ia terminals to soleus motor neurons. In paralegics, this heteronymous I

Endogenous BK stimulates ischemically sensitive abdominal visceral C fiber afferents through kinin B2 receptors.

Abdominal ischemia and reperfusion reflexly activate the cardiovascular system. In the present study, we evaluated the role of endogenously produced bradykinin (BK) in the stimulation of ischemically sensitive visceral afferents. Single-unit activity of abdominal visceral C fiber afferents was recorded from the right thoracic sympathetic chain of anesthetized cats during 5 min of abdominal ischemia. Abdominal ischemia increased the portal venous plasma BK level from 49 +/- 10 to 188 +/- 66 pg/ml (P < 0.05). Injection of BK (1 microgram/kg ia) into the descending aorta significantly increased i

[The development of periodic apneic breathing during the activation of the GABA-ergic system of the brain].

Experiments on sodium pentobarbital (40 mg/kg i.p.) anesthetized mongrel cats of either sex weighing from 2.25 to 4.25 kg showed that administration of sodium hydroxybutyrate (200 mg/kg, i.v.) resulted in periodic apneic breathing with inspiratory arrests in more than 80%. An abrupt decrease of respiratory rate and thus ventilation was conditioned by a prolonged activation of inspiratory muscles (diaphragm and external intercostals). Under these conditions, the activity of expiratory muscles (internal intercostals and abdominal muscles) was not depressed. The changes in the respiratory pattern

Quantitative somatosensory thermotest. A key method for functional evaluation of small calibre afferent channels.

The quantitative somatosensory thermotest (QST) assesses the function of afferent channels concerned with sensory submodalities served by small calibre fibres. Measured ramps of ascending or descending temperature are applied to the skin through a Peltier contact thermode, and detection thresholds are recorded as the subject signals the onset of a particular sensation. The present study describes underlying principles, methodological aspects and normal reference values for the QST. In patients, measurement of thresholds for cold sensation, warm sensation, cold-induced pain and heat-induced pai

Potentials evoked in human and monkey cerebral cortex by stimulation of the median nerve. A review of scalp and intracranial recordings.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) are generated in afferent pathways, subcortical structures and various regions of cerebellar and cerebral cortex by stimulation of somatic receptors or electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves. This review summarizes current knowledge of SEPs generated in cerebral cortex by stimulation of the median nerve, the most common form of stimulation for human research and clinical investigations. Major sources of data for the review are intracranial recordings obtained from patients during diagnostic or neurosurgical procedures, and similar recordings in monke…

Modulation of synaptic transmission at Ia-afferent connections on motoneurons during high-frequency afferent stimulation: dependence on motor task.

1. Monosynaptic excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) were evoked in medial gastrocnemius motoneurons by maximal group Ia stimulation of the heteronymous lateral gastrocnemius-soleus nerve in anesthetized cats. Three different patterns of high-frequency stimulation were delivered to the nerve, and the EPSPs were averaged in register (1, 2, . . ., n) for each. 2. One pattern ("Burst") consisted of 32 shocks delivered every 2 s at an interstimulus interval of 6 ms (167 Hz). The second pattern ("Stepping") was a frequency-modulated burst of 52 shocks derived from a recording of a spindle dur
