Accidental discharge of brodifacoum baits into a freshwater lake: a case study.

Approximately 700 kg of cereal bait containing 20 ppm of the anticoagulant rodenticide brodifacoum was spilled into a southern New Zealand lake in 2010 from a helicopter being used to transport containers of brodifacoum bait for an aerial baiting operation. In the month after the spill no residual brodifacoum was detected in samples of lake water, sediment, benthic invertebrates, eels, and two birds.

Inhalation exposure to jet fuel (JP8) among U.S. Air Force personnel.

As jet fuel is a common occupational exposure among military and civilian populations, this study was conducted to characterize jet fuel (JP8) exposure among active duty U.S. Air Force personnel. Personnel (n = 24) were divided a priori into high, moderate, and low exposure groups. Questionnaires and personal air samples (breathing zone) were collected from each worker over 3 consecutive days (72 worker-days) and analyzed for total hydrocarbons (THC), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and naphthalene. Air samples were collected from inside the fuel tank and analyzed for the same analyte

[Analysis of the extra-aural dependence of hearing disorders in civic flight personnel].

The correlation of incidence of hearing loss and concomitant pathologies in civil pilots with auditory analyzer sensitivity to aviation noise and length of service was investigated with the use of two-factor variance analysis w/o repetition. As a result of screening, 335 people (group-1) had only trace of audiometric noise impact; 108 people (group-2) displayed a sustained loss of hearing (chronic sensorineural hearing loss). In the aggregate, data of the investigation evidences that incidence of cardiovascular diseases (atherosclerosis of aorta and coronary arteries, atherosclerotic cardioscl

Using flight simulators aboard ships: human side effects of an optimal scenario with smooth seas.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Navy is considering placing flight simulators aboard ships. It is known that certain types of flight simulators can elicit motion adaptation syndrome (MAS), and also that certain types of ship motion can cause MAS. The goal of this study was to determine if using a flight simulator during ship motion would cause MAS, even when the simulator stimulus and the ship motion were both very mild. METHODS: All participants in this study completed three conditions. Condition 1 (Sim) entailed "flying" a personal computer-based flight simulator situated on land. Condition 2 (Ship)

A controlled study of virtual reality exposure therapy for the fear of flying.

Fear of flying (FOF) affects an estimated 10-25% of the population. Patients with FOF (N = 49) were randomly assigned to virtual reality exposure (VRE) therapy, standard exposure (SE) therapy, or a wait-list (WL) control. Treatment consisted of 8 sessions over 6 weeks, with 4 sessions of anxiety management training followed by either exposure to a virtual airplane (VRE) or exposure to an actual airplane at the airport (SE). A posttreatment flight on a commercial airline measured participants' willingness to fly and anxiety during flight immediately after treatment. The results indicated that V

Head roll compensation in a visually coupled HMD: considerations for helicopter operations.

BACKGROUND: The helmet-mounted display (HMD) research program at the Flight Research Laboratory of the National Research Council of Canada examined the effects of HMD camera platform dynamics on pilot workload. Many currently fielded visually coupled HMD systems do not reproduce head movements in the roll axis which can lead to the presentation of visual information that is not consistent with vestibular and proprioceptive information. HYPOTHESIS: Our hypothesis was that this sensory conflict can induce motion sickness and increase pilot workload. METHODS: To examine this premise, three pilo

The influence of military low-altitude flight noise on the inner ear of the guinea pig. Part II: Scanning electron micrographs.

Guinea pigs were exposed once to MLAF noise (126 dB(A), 75 dB/s) and 12 cochleae were prepared for scanning electron microscopy 2 to 3 weeks after exposure. Qualitative analysis of the cilia of the outer hair cells revealed the types of damage already described in literature. The spatial distribution of cilia damage, however, differed essentially from the well known pattern: the damage was more or less pancochlear, beginning in the basal turn and increasing in frequency and severeness of damage till the end of the third turn. The most severe damage was visible in the outer row of the outer hai

[Utilization of helicopters for the prevention of secondary cerebral lesions in severe craniocerebral injuries].

The prehospital emergency treatment of craniocerebral trauma tries to avoid secondary cerebral lesions by controlling respiration and circulation. The therapy consists of heavy sedation with Midazolam, analgesia with morphine, artificial hyperventilation, PaO2 over 12 kPa and average arterial pressure above 80 mmHg. Our series of 46 patients recovered between 1982-1988 had a hospital mortality of 23%. 46% of the patients were polytraumatized. A normal neurologic state 6 months from the accident was registered in 86.4%. For 13.6% it was slightly pathological and no vigilant coma state was repor

Impact of Helicopter Vibrations on In-Ear PPG Monitoring for Vital Signs-Mountain Rescue Technology Study (MoReTech).

Pulsoximeters are widely used in the medical care of preclinical patients to evaluate the cardiorespiratory status and monitor basic vital signs, such as pulse rate (PR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2). In many preclinical situations, air transport of the patient by helicopter is necessary. Conventional pulse oximeters, mostly used on the patient's finger, are prone to motion artifacts during transportation. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether simulated helicopter vibration has an impact on the photoplethysmogram (PPG) derived from an in-ear sensor at the external ear canal and whethe

A pilot study of helicopter emergency medical services in the Zhoushan Archipelago: clinical experience and operational insights from 18 cases.

BACKGROUND: The Zhoushan Archipelago faces challenges in delivering timely emergency care due to its dispersed geography and centralized medical resources. To address delays associated with ferry transport for critically ill patients on remote islands, a maritime helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) was established. METHODS: We conducted a pilot, retrospective study of all patients transported by this novel HEMS between March 2024 and June 2025. Data from electronic medical records were analyzed to assess initial feasibility, describe patient demographics, in-flight interventions, and

Amplified Pilot Head Vibration and the Effects of Vibration Mitigation on Neck Muscle Strain.

INTRODUCTION: Rotary wing pilot neck strain is increasing in prevalence due to the combined effects of head supported mass (e.g., Night Vision Goggles, head mounted displays) and whole-body vibration. This study examined the physiological responses of pilots during exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) representative of the National Research Council's Bell 412 helicopter in forward flight. WBV levels were measured and evaluated using the ISO-2631-1-1997 WBV standards. METHODS: Twelve pilots (aged 20-59 yr, 7 of the 12 with 20+ years flight experience) underwent six 15-min vibration trials on

Stroke in Commercial Flights.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke on board aircraft has been reported in retrospective case series, mainly focusing on economy class stroke syndrome. Data on the actual incidence, pathogenesis, and prognosis of stroke in commercial flights are lacking. METHODS: A prospective registry was designed to include all consecutive patients referred from an international airport (40 million passengers a year) to our hospital with a diagnosis of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack and onset of symptoms during a flight or immediately after landing. RESULTS: Forty-four patients (32 ischemic stroke…

Characterizing Strokes and Stroke Mimics Transported by Helicopter Emergency Medical Services.

OBJECTIVE: Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States with most of these patients being transported by emergency medical services. These providers are the first medical point of contact and must be able to rapidly and accurately identify stroke and transport these patients to the appropriate facilities for treatment. There are many conditions that have similar presentations to stroke and can be mistakenly identified as potential strokes, thereby affecting the initial prehospital triage. METHODS: A retrospective observational study examined patients with suspected strokes t

A case of melioidosis probably acquired by inhalation of dusts during a helicopter flight in a healthy traveler returning from Singapore.

We present a case of melioidosis in an Italian male returning from Singapore after a short travel. He probably acquired the disease by inhalation, which is not the typical mode of transmission, in the absence of evident risk factors. The diagnosis was confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction of the culture while serology was useful to assess professional exposure among laboratory workers. Treatment consisted of an initial intensive phase with meropenem and trimethoprim-sulfamethaxazole (TMP-SMX), followed by 6 months of eradication therapy with TMP-SMX.

Measles among U.S.-bound refugees from Malaysia--California, Maryland, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, August-September 2011.

On August 26, 2011, California public health officials notified CDC of a suspected measles case in an unvaccinated male refugee aged 15 years from Burma (the index patient), who had lived in an urban area of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which is experiencing ongoing measles outbreaks. Currently, approximately 92,000 such refugees are living in urban communities in Malaysia. Resettlement programs in the United States and other countries are ongoing. The health and vaccination status of urban refugees are largely unknown.

The psychology of fear of flying (part II): a critical evaluation of current perspectives on approaches to treatment.

This is the second of a two part review which critically evaluates research published in disparate sources into the psychological treatment of fear of flying. Part I established fear of flying as a complex heterogeneous clinical phenomenon. This paper discusses the way in which evidence from clinical trials translates to best practice in treating fear of flying. Published research on psychological interventions uses terminology which bears a close resemblance to cognitive behavioural therapy. It is, however, questionable whether some treatment approaches reflect the implementation of the cogni

Anaphylaxis in an airplane after insecticide spraying.

Flights departing from malarious areas are sprayed with pyrethroids. They are presumed to be safe since reports of adverse responses among passengers or crew were only anecdotal. However, asthmatic reactions after domestic and occupational exposure have been published. We present the first case description of pyrethroid allergy in an airplane.
