Polygonatum polysaccharide microspheres encapsulated living Clostridium butyricum for mucosal barrier repair and immune regulation.

A collaborative intervention strategy based on probiotics represents a promising therapeutic approach against inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, enhancing probiotic efficacy within the IBD microenvironment while minimizing side effects remains a critical challenge. Polygonatum polysaccharide (PP), a natural plant-derived bioactive polymer, has attracted significant attention due to its ability to regulate oxidative and inflammatory stress with a favorable safety profile. Herein, PP was incorporated into calcium-alginate microgels (Mgel), resulting in enhanced mechanical strength and th

Sodium alginate-encapsulated Colchicum nanoparticles attenuate TNF-α and NF-κB signaling in macrophages: A novel therapeutic strategy for rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease driven by macrophage activation and pro-inflammatory signaling, particularly via TNF-α and NF-κB pathways. Current therapies, including methotrexate and biologic agents, provide clinical benefits but are limited by systemic toxicity, high costs, and treatment resistance. Here, we report the development of sodium alginate (SA)-encapsulated nanoparticles incorporating Colchicum micranthum (CM) and Colchicum chalcedonicum (CC) extracts as a novel therapeutic approach for RA. Phytochemical profiling revealed distinct polyphenolic signatures

Development of phage-containing hydrogel for treating Enterococcus faecalis-infected wounds.

BACKGROUND: Chronic wound infections caused by Enterococcus faecalis pose formidable challenges in clinical management, exacerbated by the emergence of vancomycin-resistant strains. Phage therapy offers a targeted approach but encounters delivery hurdles. Due to their biocompatibility and controlled release properties, hydrogels hold promise as carriers. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to fabricate phage-containing hydrogels using sodium alginate (SA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and hyaluronic acid (HA) to treat E. faecalis-infected wounds. We assessed the efficacy of these hydrogels both in

Treatment of reflux oesophagitis with a carbenoxolone/antacid/alginate preparation. A double-blind controlled trial.

Twenty-nine patients were treated with a carbenoxolone/antacid/alginate preparation (Pyrogastrone) and 30 with antacid/alginate alone four times each day for 8 weeks, in a double-blind study, to ascertain the value of carbenoxolone in the treatment of patients with endoscopically confirmed reflux oesophagitis. Symptom review every 2 weeks and endoscopic findings every 4 weeks were converted to a 6-point grading system to facilitate statistical comparison, using a stochastic model for predicting the rate of change in grades during treatment. Carbenoxolone-treated patients showed an 82% improvem

In vivo experience with natural scaffolds for myocardial infarction: the times they are a-changin'.

Treating a myocardial infarction (MI), the most frequent cause of death worldwide, remains one of the most exciting medical challenges in the 21st century. Cardiac tissue engineering, a novel emerging treatment, involves the use of therapeutic cells supported by a scaffold for regenerating the infarcted area. It is essential to select the appropriate scaffold material; the ideal one should provide a suitable cellular microenvironment, mimic the native myocardium, and allow mechanical and electrical coupling with host tissues. Among available scaffold materials, natural scaffolds are preferable

Current Challenges and Potential Strategies to Enhance Efficacy of Oral Phage Therapy in Food Animals: A Systematic Review with Quantitative Analysis.

Phage therapy has enormous potential in combating bacterial resistance in food animals. However, its application via the oral route remains limited due to challenges associated with the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) environment and a lack of rigorous clinical trial evidence. Therefore, we systematically searched in Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases following PRISMA guidelines and finally identified 111 articles on oral phage therapy in food animals from where we summarized the key physiological and chemical factors of the gut environment hindering the effectiveness of

Ultramicroporous Al(III) MOFs with selective CO2 adsorption, acid resistance, and efficient Cr(VI) sorption properties.

In the present work, we report the hydrothermal synthesis and detailed characterization of a series of ultramicroporous, luminescent, multivariate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the general formula [Al(OH)(IATP)1-x(NH2-BDC)x], constructed from two different dicarboxylate ligands, H2IATP = 2-(((1H-imidazol-4-yl)methyl)amino) terephthalic acid and NH2-H2BDC = 2-aminoterephthalic acid. Structural analysis, using both powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and microcrystal electron diffraction (MicroED), confirms that the reported MTV-Al-MOFs are topological analogues of the related NH2-MIL-53(Al)

[Preventive effect of polaprezinc suspension dispersed in sodium alginate solution (P-AG) for stomatitis induced by Docetaxel/Cisplatin/Fluorouracil (DCF) chemotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer].

We measured the effectiveness of the prophylactic administration of a polaprezinc suspension dispersed in sodium alginate solution (P-AG) by dividing it into two courses in the same patients, and measured the stomatitis induced by Docetaxel/Cisplatin/Fluorouracil (DCF) chemotherapy. We then evaluated the results. We defined the therapeutic course as the course where P-AG was given therapeutically for stomatitis induced after DCF chemotherapy. We defined the prophylactic course as when P-AG was prophylactically given before any incidences of stomatitis after the therapeutic course. We compared

[Bichat's buccal fat pad for reconstruction of posterior oral cavity defects].

Some losses of matter in the posterior area of the oral cavity require reconstruction with vascularized tissue to prevent retraction and a limited mouth opening. Bichat's fat pad or Bichat's fat ball is rarely used for oral mucosal reconstruction despite its proximity, easy availability, plasticity and simple use as a flap. Bichat's fat pad is resistant to lipolysis even in case of major weight-loss. It usually herniates in the exeresis site of a jugal tumor or intermaxillary commissure. When this is not the case, it can be obtained by a horizontal vestibular incision. The fat pad is unfolded

A novel technology for biosorption and recovery hexavalent chromium in wastewater by bio-functional magnetic beads.

The goal of this study was to develop an applied technique for the removal and recovery of heavy metal in wastewater. It is novel that the Cr(VI) could be adsorbed and recovered by bio-functional magnetic beads. Furthermore, the magnetic separation technology would make their separation more convenient. The beads were constituted by the powder of Rhizopus cohnii and Fe(3)O(4) particles coated with alginate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The parameters effecting Cr(VI) removal were obtained: the optimum pH 1.0 and optimum temperature 28 degrees C. The biosorption took place mainly in form of Cr(V

Follicle-forming cat thyroid cell lines synthesizing extracellular matrix and basal membrane components: a new tool for the study of thyroidal morphogenesis.

Interactions between follicular epithelial cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) are supposed to play an important role in the development and maintenance of thyroid tissue architecture. In the present study we have therefore investigated the synthesis of ECM components by a feline thyroid cell line which is able to form follicle-like structures in vitro, and also in v-ras-transfected and control-transfected sublines. Transfections were performed by lipofection with pZSR (viral Harvey ras gene; neo) and pSV2-neo (control, neo only) plasmids. We have adapted a semisolid culture system composed e

Optimization, physicochemical stability and in vivo study of alginate-chitosan composites as nanocarriers for low molecular weight angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory peptide.

Chitosan and alginate, are non-toxic and biodegradable polymers used to enhance the stability of biotherapeutics by loading them into nanocarriers. In this study, the stone fish-derived low molecular weight peptide (Ala-Leu-Gly-Pro-Gln-Phe-Tyr), exhibited an in vitro ACE-inhibitory activity of 94.43 ± 2.05% and an IC50 of 0.012 ± 0.001 mM. The peptide was encapsulated via ionic gelation with alginate followed by polyelectrolyte complexation with chitosan. The resulting ACE-inhibitory peptide-loaded alginate-chitosan nanoparticles (ACE-I-ALG-CS NPs) were optimized to achieve small particle size
