Two patients developed anaphylaxis after injection of a corticosteroid preparation containing carboxymethylcellulose (E466). In both cases skin tests yielded positive immediate type reactions to pure carboxymethylcellulose. This hydrophilic derivative of cellulose has found wide application in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industry. We investigated the effect of cytochalasin D on anaphylaxis. Cytochalasin D dose-dependently inhibited systemic anaphylaxis induced by compound 48/80 in rats. BACKGROUND: Aspirin idiosyncrasy can present with bronchospasm or cutaneous reactions, but combined pulmonary and cutaneous reactions are rare. High-dose acetaminophen has been reported to provoke bronchospasm in aspirin-sensitive asthmatic patients.
CASE HISTORY: We report an asthmatic adolescent female who had anaphylaxis with 650 mg acetaminophen after tolerating 325-mg doses for years. We retrospectively studied anaphylaxis in an A&E department from computerized records. In 1993 (Study A), of 55,000 patients seen in casualty, nine had severe anaphylaxis (ANA) with loss of consciousness (LOC) or fainting (about 1: 6000). A 12-month-old boy, with a strong history of cow's milk allergy, developed two episodes of anaphylaxis following cutaneous application of a casein containing ointment to an inflamed diaper area. RAST testing showed a significant elevation in specific IgE antibodies to milk and milk proteins. This experience suggests that children who are highly sensitive to milk may have severe allergic reactions on cutaneous exposure to milk or milk products.

The influence of mouse genotype on passive systemic anaphylaxis (PSA) by immune complexes was studied. PSA was induced by using Brucella abortus endotoxin as the antigen and rabbit anti-Brucella endotoxin antisera. A search of the French and English language literature of the last 20 years (1964-1984) yielded 975 cases of immediate anaphylactoid reactions due to anaesthetic drugs given parenterally.
