Arthroscopy in cattle: technique and normal anatomy.

Arthroscopy has all the advantages of minimally invasive surgery in cattle. Specialized equipment and knowledge of normal joint anatomy of cattle are mandatory for successful arthroscopy. The surgical technique is different in cattle compared with the horse. Thick skin and joint capsules complicate movement of the arthroscope within the joints. In cattle, septic arthritis and osteochondrosis are the most frequent disorders suitable for arthroscopic treatment.

Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of congenital dislocation of the hips.

Magnetic resonance (MR) images were obtained preoperatively and postoperatively for 12 pediatric patients with congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH). The images were compared with arthrograms and computed tomography scans. The MR images were more accurate in defining soft-tissue anatomy, hip position, and obstructive factors to relocation. MR imaging is an efficient diagnostic tool in CDH.

Comparison of MR angiography and conventional angiography in the investigation of intracranial arteriovenous malformations and aneurysms in children.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is an attractive alternative to conventional catheter angiography (CCA) in children, especially for the detection of intracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) or aneurysms in the out-of-hours setting, because it has fewer risks and complications. OBJECTIVE. To compare MRA with CCA for the detection of intracranial AVMs, aneurysms and arterial anatomy in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective blinded review of MRAs and CCAs by two independent paediatric radiologists, in a group of 19 children already diagnosed with AVMs, aneurysms

Design and Verification of a Metaphyseal Filling Stem for Total Hip Arthroplasty Based on Novel Measurements of Proximal Femoral Anatomy.

BACKGROUND: Cementless metaphyseal filling stems rely on fixation in the medial-to-lateral and anterior-to-posterior (AP) planes. The purpose of this preclinical study was to develop Insignia, a new metaphyseal filling system to match the anatomy of the proximal femur, and then compare it to clinically successful stems in multiple simulations. METHODS: In this preclinical study, the geometry of the proximal femur in the AP plane among 1321 healthy subjects was evaluated using computed tomography. This data was then used to design insignia. Preclinical studies were performed to compare the bro

Finite-Element Modelling Based on Optical Coherence Tomography and Corresponding X-ray MicroCT Data for Three Human Middle Ears.

PURPOSE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an emerging imaging modality which is non-invasive, can be employed in vivo, and can record both anatomy and vibrations. The purpose here is to explore the application of finite-element (FE) modelling to OCT data. METHODS: We recorded vibrations for three human cadaver middle ears using OCT. We also have X-ray microCT images from the same ears. Three FE models were built based on geometries obtained from the microCT images. The material properties and boundary conditions of the models were obtained from previously reported studies. RESULTS: Tymp

[The lymph nodes of the fallow deer (Dama dama L., 1758)].

In the present study the topographic anatomy of the lymph nodes of fallow deer is described in detail. The Nl. axillaris proprius is absent. This, however, is the only apparent difference when comparing fallow deer with cattle, sheep, goat and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L. 1758) in respect to the existence of the lymph nodes. Minor topographic deviations are of little importance for locating the lymph nodes.

Thiel embalming method used for anatomy dissection as an educational tool in teaching human anatomy, in research, and in training in comparison of different methods for long term preservation.

The use of human cadavers is beneficial in teaching gross human anatomy, training, and development in medicine. Fresh-frozen cadavers initially exhibit natural colour, tenderness, and flexibility. They also present innumerable difficulties, including the requirement of freezers for storage and a few weeks' work time because of fast decay. The risk of infection is also significant. A possible choice for fresh-frozen cadavers is embalmed cadavers. The requested characteristic needed for successful embalming is acceptable long-term structural preservation of organs and tissues with minimal deform

Melanoma of the Hands and Feet (With Reconstruction).

Melanomas only account for 4% of all dermatologic cancers yet are responsible for 80% of deaths. Notably, melanomas of the hand and foot have a worse prognosis when compared with melanomas of other anatomic regions. Likely this is due to intrinsic biologic characteristics, delayed diagnosis, difficult surgical excision due to delicate anatomy, and lack of definitive diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines. The most common locations of melanoma of the hand, in order of decreasing frequency, are subungual area, dorsal surface, and palmar surface. The most common locations of melanoma of the foot a

"Multimodality imaging of the extrapleural space lesions".

Extrapleural space (EPS) is a potential space between the outer layer of the parietal pleura and the inner layer of the chest wall and the diaphragm. Many different pathologies including chronic inflammatory conditions, infections, trauma, neoplastic disease (both benign and malignant) as well as many infiltrative disorders can involve the EPS. It is one of the frequently overlooked entity on imaging due to relative lack of understanding of the anatomy and the imaging appearances of the diseases localized to this space. The knowledge of the EPS is essential for the radiologists as the patholog

Perirenal Fat: A Unique Fat Pad and Potential Target for Cardiovascular Disease.

Although visceral obesity is recognized as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the efficacy of omental fat removal in CVD treatment is still controversial. There is a need to identify other visceral fat depots for CVD management. This review aims to provide a summary on perirenal fat as an important risk factor for CVD. Studies on epidemiology, anatomy, and function of perirenal fat were reviewed. Observational studies in humans suggest that excessive perirenal fat increases the risk of hypertension and coronary heart disease. Anatomy studies prove that perirenal fat is unique co

Using micro computed tomography to investigate a fetal mummy with possible situs inversus: A case report.

OBJECTIVES: Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to noninvasively examine mummified remains, but can have resolution limitations when analyzing smaller mummified specimens, such as fetal mummies. This short report determines if the enhanced resolution of micro CT improves the anatomical analysis of mummified fetal anatomy. METHODS: A fetal mummy from an anatomical collection was scanned by a micro CT at a resolution of 0.08 mm slice thickness. The mummy was also scanned at a resolution of 0.6 mm slice thickness to mimic the approximate minimum resolution of a conventional CT scanner. The

Functional anatomy and pathophysiologic principles in mitral regurgitation: Non-invasive assessment.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the most prevalent cause of valvular heart disease (VHD) in western countries. In the Euro Heart Survey on VHD, MR was the second most common heart VHD requiring surgery. It is also the most common form of VHD in community and population-based studies from the United States. The categorization of MR based on causes and mechanisms is a major determinant of clinical outcome, of possible therapies for the MR and of the effectiveness of these therapies. Surgical mitral valve (MV) repair has been shown to improve survival in patients with severe primary MR compared with

Pain. Part 2a: Trigeminal Anatomy Related to Pain.

In order to understand the underlying principles of orofacial pain it is important to understand the corresponding anatomy and mechanisms. Paper 1 of this series explains the central nervous and peripheral nervous systems relating to pain. The trigeminal nerve is the 'great protector' of the most important region of our body. It is the largest sensory nerve of the body and over half of the sensory cortex is responsive to any stimulation within this system. This nerve is the main sensory system of the branchial arches and underpins the protection of the brain, sight, smell, airway, hearing and

Preventive ablation strategies in a biophysical model of atrial fibrillation based on realistic anatomical data.

Ablation strategies to prevent episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) have been subject to many clinical studies. The issues mainly concern pattern and transmurality of the lesions. This paper investigates ten different ablation strategies on a multilayered 3-D anatomical model of the atria with respect to 23 different setups of AF initiation in a biophysical computer model. There were 495 simulations carried out showing that circumferential lesions around the pulmonary veins (PVs) yield the highest success rate if at least two additional linear lesions are carried out. The findings c

Three-dimensional analysis of the intrinsic anatomy of the metatarsal bones.

Knowledge of the anatomy of the forefoot is important for understanding its mechanical pathology and developing specific surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to quantify 3-dimensional morphological parameters, which were proposed for the characterization of the metatarsal intrinsic anatomy. Thirty-five metatarsal bones prepared from 7 cadaver specimens were analyzed according to a new 3-dimensional computer-aided (CA) methodology. Manual and CA measurement techniques were compared. The reality of an intrinsic axial torsion of the metatarsals was underlined with mean values between 3.

Intraurethral ultrasonography: correlation of urethral anatomy with functional urodynamic parameters in stress incontinent women.

To determine whether differences in functional urodynamic parameters can be explained by changes in urethral anatomy, 39 patients underwent intraurethral ultrasonography to obtain a 360 degree view of the urethra. The point of maximal rhabdosphincter thickness was identified in all patients. The thickness, circumference and area of the urethral smooth and skeletal muscle layers were calculated. Data from patient histories and urodynamic evaluations were compared with this anatomical survey. The urodynamic diagnoses were as follows: 10 patients were normal, 24 had genuine stress incontinence an

A new technique of surface anatomy MR scanning of the brain: its application to scalp incision planning.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Surface anatomy scanning (SAS) is an established technique for demonstrating the brain's surface. We describe our experience in applying SAS with superposition of MR venograms to preoperative scalp incision planning. METHODS: In 16 patients, scalp incision planning was done by placing a water-filled plastic tube at the intended incision site when we performed SAS using half-Fourier single-shot fast spin-echo sequences. Two-dimensional phase-contrast MR angiograms were obtained to demonstrate the cortical veins and then superimposed upon the SAS images. The added images
