Development of a Closed-Loop Stimulator for Laryngeal Reanimation: Part 2. Device Testing in the Canine Model of Laryngeal Paralysis.

OBJECTIVE:: Laryngeal paralysis of central or peripheral origin can potentially be treated using functional electrical stimulation (FES) of laryngeal muscles. Experiments in canines (dogs) were performed using implant prototypes capable of closed-loop FES to refine engineering designs and specifications, test surgical approaches for implantation, and better understand the in vivo effects of laryngeal muscle stimulation on short- and long-term glottic function. STUDY DESIGN:: Prospective, laboratory. METHODS:: We designed and tested a series of microprocessor-based implantable devices that ca

Characterizing the bacterial microbiota in different gastrointestinal tract segments of the Bactrian camel.

The bacterial community plays important roles in the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of animals. However, our understanding of the microbial communities in the GIT of Bactrian camels remains limited. Here, we describe the bacterial communities from eight different GIT segments (rumen, reticulum, abomasum, duodenum, ileum, jejunum, caecum, colon) and faeces determined from 11 Bactrian camels using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Twenty-seven bacterial phyla were found in the GIT, with Firmicutes, Verrucomicrobia and Bacteroidetes predominating. However, there were significant differences in m

The influence of the few: a stable 'oligarchy' controls information flow in house-hunting ants.

Animals that live together in groups often face difficult choices, such as which food resource to exploit, or which direction to flee in response to a predator. When there are costs associated with deadlock or group fragmentation, it is essential that the group achieves a consensus decision. Here, we study consensus formation in emigrating ant colonies faced with a binary choice between two identical nest-sites. By individually tagging each ant with a unique radio-frequency identification microchip, and then recording all ant-to-ant 'tandem runs'-stereotyped physical interactions that communic

Landscape, livestock mobility, and traditional management of Belahi cattle in the Shivalik foothills pastoral system.

Belahi cattle constitute a distinct indigenous cattle population maintained primarily by the Gujjar/Gurjar pastoralist community in Haryana, India. The aim of this study was to document pastoral management practices relevant to the conservation and sustainable utilization of Belahi cattle within their native breeding tract. Data were collected through structured surveys and field observations across different ecological zones of the Shivalik foothills, an ecotonal region between the Himalayan ecosystem and the Indo-Gangetic plains. Transhumant pastoralism was practiced by 60% of respondents, f

Putative Pathobionts in HLA-B27-Associated Spondyloarthropathy.

Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a group of immune mediated inflammatory diseases with a strong association to the major histocompatibility (MHC) class I molecule, HLA-B27. Although the association between HLA-B27 and AS has been known for almost 50 years, the mechanisms underlying disease pathogenesis are elusive. Over the years, three hypotheses have been proposed to explain HLA-B27 and disease association: 1) HLA B27 presents arthritogenic peptides and thus creates a pathological immune response; 2) HLA-B27 misfolding causes endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress which activates the unfolded protein r

Mathematical analysis of a model for zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis.

Zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL), caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum and transmitted to humans and reservoir hosts by female sandflies, is endemic in many parts of the world (notably in Africa, Asia and the Mediterranean). This study presents a new mathematical model for assessing the transmission dynamics of ZVL in human and non-human animal reservoir populations. The model undergoes the usual phenomenon of backward bifurcation exhibited by similar vector-borne disease transmission models. In the absence of such phenomenon (which is shown to arise due to the disease-ind

Defining the "core microbiome" of the microbial communities in the tonsils of healthy pigs.

BACKGROUND: Porcine tonsils are the colonization site for many pathogenic as well as commensal microorganisms and are the primary lymphoid tissue encountered by organisms entering through the mouth or nares. The goal of this study was to provide an in-depth characterization of the composition and structure of the tonsillar microbial communities and to define the core microbiome in the tonsils of healthy pigs, using high throughput bar-coded 454-FLX pyrosequencing. RESULTS: Whole tonsils were collected at necropsy from 12 16-week-old finisher pigs from two healthy herds. Tonsil brushes were al

Female frogs communicate with males through blinking.

Blinking is a behavior unique to animal taxa with motile eyelids, such as most amphibians and reptiles as well as all birds and mammals1. Eyelid movement has physiological functions, such as lubricating the cornea and washing away dust, but its potential signaling functions are not well understood1,2. The use of eyeblinks as a social signal is currently thought to be restricted to some primates, especially humans and their companion animals, but has not been verified in other taxa1,3,4. Here, through field observation and experiments, we demonstrate that female concave-eared torrent frogs (Odo

IS26 drives the dissemination of bla CTX-M genes in an Ecuadorian community.

The horizontal gene transfer events are the major contributors to the current spread of CTX-M-encoding genes, the most common extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL), and many clinically crucial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. This study presents evidence of the critical role of IS26 transposable element for the mobility of bla CTX-M gene among Escherichia coli isolates from children and domestic animals in the community. We suggest that the nucleotide sequences of IS26-bla CTX-M could be used to study bla CTX-M transmission between humans, domestic animals, and the environment, because und

Human illness associated with use of veterinary vaccines.

Veterinary vaccines are being used with increasing frequency in the United States to protect the health of animals. However, humans may be inadvertently exposed to these products by means of unintentional inoculation or other routes of exposure. The potential for both exposure and for adverse consequences secondary to exposure to veterinary vaccines may be growing. With the exception of brucellosis vaccines, there have been few reports of suspected or confirmed adverse events in humans associated with the use of animal vaccines, but it is unclear whether that is because few adverse events occu

Quinolones in the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections in adult patients.

The potential role of quinolones is discussed on the basis of data obtained during the past 2 years from epidemiological studies, in vitro investigations, animal experiments and clinical trials. Although the newest compounds exhibit good activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae and intracellular pathogens in animal models, the role of quinolones as first line therapy in community-acquired pneumonia is still debatable and may be modified according to clinical presentation and the rate of resistance of pneumococci to beta-lactams and macrolides. Cost-utility and cost-benefit studies are require

Dynamics of Aedes aegypti mating behaviour.

The use of pheromones, while common, remains underexplored in mosquito research. Understanding Aedes aegypti's mating behaviour and pheromones is crucial for expanding knowledge and advancing vector control strategies. Unlike other species, Aedes mosquitoes have adaptable mating behaviour, complicating the study of their communication mechanisms. Current literature on Aedes communication is sparse, not due to lack of effort but because of its complexity. Ae. aegypti's mating behaviour is influenced by sensory cues and environmental factors. Swarming, which facilitates mating aggregation, is tr

Incomplete homogenization of chemical recognition labels between Formica sanguinea and Formica rufa ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) living in a mixed colony.

Formica sanguinea Latreille (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is a slave-making species, i.e., it raids colonies of host species and pillages pupae, which are taken to develop into adult workers in a parasite colony. However, it has been unclear if the coexistence of F. sanguinea with slave workers requires uniformity of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), among which those other than n-alkanes are believed to be the principal nestmate recognition cues utilized by ants. In this study, a mixed colony (MC) of F. sanguinea and Formica rufa L. as a slave species was used to test the hypothesis that CHCs are ex

Variation in cultural attitude, knowledge and individual motivational factors impact engagement and tool use in a field experiment in wild chimpanzees.

Cultural traditions shape how animals approach ecological problems. Over the last two decades, Ugandan chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) have engaged with the honey-trap experiment, an apparatus mimicking a beehive, while relying on their cultural knowledge. Here, we compared the behaviour of three Ugandan chimpanzee communities in the experiment, adding a previously untested community, the Mwera South chimpanzees of Bugoma Forest. First, we tested whether communities varied in their engagement with the experiment and investigated whether differences lay in individual or community-b

Archaeal and Bacterial Communities Within the Wetland Alkaline Har Lake of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.

Har Lake (HL) is in the northeastern basin of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (QTP), sits at an altitude of 4379 m, and is classified as a soda lake within a wetland ecosystem. Evaluating the archaeal and bacterial communities in HL could offer valuable insights into the biogeochemical cycling within plateau wetland lakes. Consequently, high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes was conducted in this study to assess the composition of HL microbial communities and their association with environmental factors. The HL archaeal communities comprised 5 phyla, 5 classes, and 30 genera, while the bacter

Composition and diversity of the preputial microbiota in healthy bulls.

Characterization of microbial communities inhabiting the reproductive tracts of cattle may lead to a better comprehension of bovine physiology and reproductive health. To date, reported studies have utilized culture-independent 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) for the classification of microbiota in the vaginal tract of cows but no studies have looked at the microbiota of the prepuce or penis of the bull. The aim of this study was to elucidate the microbiota present on the epithelial surface of the penis and prepuce of the post-pubertal bull using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Ninety-two healthy bulls of

Dubious presence of Bartonella bacilliformis in ticks from Madre de Dios, Peru.

Bartonella bacilliformis has recently been described in Amblyomma scalpturatum, Amblyomma ovale and Rhipicephalus microplus collected from wild animals in the Peruvian region of Madre de Dios. In this communication, I will discuss the results of a recent study by del Valle-Mendoza et al. together with the B. bacilliformis epidemiology. Following my argumentation, I consider the presence of this microorganism in the above ticks improbable.

Clostridium difficile colitis and zoonotic origins-a narrative review.

Clostridium difficile is a major cause of hospital-associated diarrhoea, and in severe cases leads to pseudomembranous colitis and toxic megacolon. The frequency of C. difficile infection (CDI) has increased in recent decades, with 453 000 cases identified in 2011 in the USA. This is related to antibiotic-selection pressure, disruption of normal host intestinal microbiota and emergence of antibiotic-resistant C. difficile strains. The burden of community-acquired CDI has been increasingly appreciated, with disease identified in patients previously considered low-risk, such as young women or pa

Circannual somatostatin gene and somatostatin receptor gene expression in the early post-natal rat pineal gland.

The origin of somatostatin in the pineal gland is controversial as a double origin - neural in pinealopetal nerve fibers and parenchymal corresponding to locally synthesized peptide - is suggested. We have investigated the ontogeny and possible circadian and circannual variations of somatostatin and somatostatin receptor gene expression in the rat pineal gland using RT-PCR. Somatostatin gene expression was observed in the pineal of animals up to 15 days of postnatal life in autumn and winter, but not in prepubertal or adult rats; no transcript was detected during spring and summer at any age a

Characterization of early communicative behavior in mouse models of neurofibromatosis type 1.

UNLABELLED: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a monogenic neurodevelopmental disease caused by germline loss-of-function mutations in the NF1 tumor suppressor gene. Cognitive impairments are observed in approximately 80% of children with this disease, with 45-60% exhibiting autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptomatology. In light of the high comorbidity rate between ASD and NF1, we assessed early communicative behavior by maternal-separation induced pup ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) and developmental milestones in two distinct Nf1 genetically engineered models, one modeling clinical germline h
