Environmental monitoring and the developmental origins of health and disease.

Early-life chronic exposure to environmental contaminants, such as bisphenol-A, particulate matter air pollution, organophosphorus pesticides, and pharmaceutical drugs, among others, may affect central tissues, such as the hypothalamus, and peripheral tissues, such as the endocrine pancreas, causing inflammation and apoptosis with severe implications to the metabolism. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept articulates events in developmental phases of life, such as intrauterine, lactation, and adolescence, to later-life metabolism and health. These developmental phase

Lifetime prevalence rates of sleep paralysis: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To determine lifetime prevalence rates of sleep paralysis. DATA SOURCES: Keyword term searches using "sleep paralysis", "isolated sleep paralysis", or "parasomnia not otherwise specified" were conducted using MEDLINE (1950-present) and PsychINFO (1872-present). English and Spanish language abstracts were reviewed, as were reference lists of identified articles. STUDY SELECTION: Thirty five studies that reported lifetime sleep paralysis rates and described both the assessment procedures and sample utilized were selected. DATA EXTRACTION: Weighted percentages were calculated for ea

[Macroglossia and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: In 1963 Beckwith presented a report on the first patient with extreme cytomegaly of adrenal cortex, hyperplasia of kidneys and pancreas and Leydig cell hyperplasia. Wiedemann completed description of the new syndrome by adding umbilical hernia and macroglossia. The diagnosis is made based on the clinical signs of omphalocele or some other umbilical deformity, macroglossia, congenital asymmetry, visceromegaly (liver, pancreas, and kidneys). CASE OUTLINE: A 16-month-old male child was admitted for examination because of macroglossia. He underwent examination on several occasions b

The Polyvagal Theory: phylogenetic contributions to social behavior.

The scientific legacy of Paul MacLean provides important insights into the neural substrate of adaptive social behavior in mammals. Through his research and visionary conceptualizations, current investigators can legitimately study social behavior from a neurobiological perspective. His research and writings provided three important contributions. First, he emphasized the importance of evolution as an organizing principle that shaped both the structure of the nervous system and the adaptive social behavior. Second, by defining the limbic system, he legitimized the biological perspective in the

[Clinical and prognostic heterogeneity in Aicardi's syndrome: a description of two cases].

INTRODUCTION: Aicardi's syndrome is characterized by infantile spasms, agenesis of the corpus callosum and ocular lesions. Clinically it presents as severe mental retardation, severe limitation of motor development and of language, with a prognosis of survival for only a few months or years. We present two new cases of this uncommon syndrome and describe the heterogeneity of its clinical and prognostic severity. CLINICAL CASES: Case 1. A ten-month old patient had flexion spasms of the limbs at the age of 4 months, bilateral corioretinal lesions and generalized hypoplasia of the corpus callosu

Comparative evaluation of condylar position in symptomatic (TMJ dysfunction) and asymptomatic individuals.

CONTEXT: The etiopathogenesis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders has been attributed to multiple factors and, while the importance of centric relation (CR) has been acknowledged in dental literature, the role of condylar position and CR-CO (CO-centric occlusion) discrepancy in TMJ dysfunction (TMD) has been a source of controversy. AIM: To establish the relationship between condyle position and TMD. SETTING AND DESIGN: This was a case-control study to evaluate condylar displacement and interarch CR-CO discrepancy in symptomatic subjects (with TMD) and compare them with asymptomatic s

[REM sleep behavior disorder: an overt access to motor and cognitive control during sleep].

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by violent, or potentially violent, movements during REM sleep, corresponding to enacted dreams. During sleep monitoring, there is a partial or total loss of the normal muscle atonia during REM sleep. REM sleep behavior disorder predominantly affects elderly subjects without any other disease (idiopathic RBD, a precursor of Parkinson disease and Lewy body dementia) or suffering from various neurological and neurodegenerative diseases, mainly synucleinopathies. In addition to being a treatable cause of nocturnal injury of t

Best practices for tracing the palate in ultrasound images.

Ultrasound (US) imaging is a powerful tool for visualizing the vocal tract and tongue motion during speech articulation. A key aspect of analyzing tongue motion is accurately tracing the palate's contour in US images, as it provides a fixed anatomical reference for measuring tongue position and deformation. However, accurately tracing the palate in US images remains challenging due to limited visibility caused by the air gap between the palate and the tongue. To address this limitation, we evaluate the reproducibility of manual palate tracing using methods that rely on varying levels of assist

A Study of Persian English Teachers' Voices: Do Acoustic Voice Characteristics Change When Speaking in English and Farsi?

OBJECTIVE: Voice characteristics can vary across languages due to distinct phonological and articulatory demands. However, limited research exists on how acoustic parameters differ when bilingual speakers switch between Farsi and English. This study aimed to compare the acoustic voice characteristics when Persian teachers of English languages switch between English and Farsi. METHODS: Thirty-eight English language teachers (30 females, 8 males, age range: 20-28 years) with Persian as their native language and a minimum of 3 years of English teaching experience participated in this study. Protocol for the development of a core outcome set for reporting outcomes of management of velopharyngeal dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) is present in up to 40% of patients following cleft palate repair. Children with VPD display hypernasal speech, nasal air emission and are at a high risk for developing articulation disorders. The overall result is decreased intelligibility and acceptability of speech, as well as significant functional and social impairments. Although there are several surgical approaches for the management of children with VPD, standard treatment protocols have not been well defined. There is a need for a core outcome set (COS) to reduce outcome reporting bias an…

Prevalence and association of headaches, temporomandibular joint disorders, and occlusal interferences.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Although an interaction of malocclusion, parafunction, and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) can be inferred from the experience of daily practice, scientific evidence to corroborate this hypothesis does not exist. However, there are indications that TMD and headaches may be intertwined. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the presence or absence of an association of occlusal interferences, parafunction, TMD, or physiologic, muscular, or prosthodontic factors with the occurrence of headache. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a private practice population of
