The effects of adolescent depression and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder on educational attainment in adulthood.

Early-onset mental disorders, particularly depression and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are a growing concern among U.S. adolescents. Previous research offers inconclusive findings on how these conditions affect educational attainment, and the pathways remain unclear. This paper estimates the causal effects of adolescent depression and ADHD on adult educational attainment using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). To address unobservable confounders, measurement errors, and reverse causality, we employ polygenetic scores (PGSs

Evaluating the Validity of Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children in Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is prevalent in children and strongly associated with sleep disorders, emphasizing the clinical importance of diagnosing sleep disorders in these patients. Here, we aimed to assess the validity of the sleep disturbance scale for children (SDSC) in children with ADHD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted between 2020 and 2021, involved 204 children diagnosed with ADHD and 202 healthy children as controls. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling from schools, community centers, and pediatric clinics. Demograp

In utero exposure to acetaminophen and childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: An ongoing controversy.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children as related to maternal use of acetaminophen (paracetamol, APAP) remains an ongoing controversy. In a recent paper in Nature Mental Health, Baker et al. reports on ADHD in children as related to maternal use of acetaminophen APAP in pregnancy. We discuss the methodological strengths and limitations and the extent to which this paper informs clinical practice.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults: evidence base, uncertainties and controversies.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was once thought to be solely a childhood condition. Now it is well established that it can persist into adulthood, with an estimated worldwide prevalence of around 2.5%. Additionally, up to 70% of individuals with childhood-onset ADHD continue to experience impairing symptoms as adults, even if they no longer meet the criteria for a formal diagnosis. The validity of adult ADHD initially faced strong criticism. Today, empirical research supports its descriptive validity (identifying characteristic signs and symptoms), predictive validity (concern

Brain mechanisms of temporal processing in impulsivity: Relevance to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

In this article, we critique the hypothesis that different varieties of impulsivity, including impulsiveness present in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, encompass an accelerated perception of time. This conceptualisation provides insights into how individuals with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder have the capacity to maximise cognitive capabilities by more closely aligning themselves with appropriate environmental contexts (e.g. fast paced tasks that prevent boredom). We discuss the evidence for altered time perception in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder alongside puta

Wearable Signals for Diagnosing Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Adolescents: A Feasibility Study.

OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder in children and adolescents. Diagnoses of ADHD often rely on subjective ratings from parents and teachers. This study investigated the feasibility of using objective activity monitoring data collected through wearable activity trackers for ADHD diagnosis and monitoring in adolescents. METHOD: A longitudinal study was conducted involving Chinese adolescents ages 16 to 17 years. Data collected included objective measures (movement acceleration, heart rate, and sleep patterns from passive actigr

Cognitive control enhancement in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and neurotypical individuals.

Cognitive control, which has been localized to the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) based on functional imaging and brain lesion studies, is impaired in patients with ADHD. The present study aims to investigate whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the rIFG might improve cognitive control in ADHD subjects. We hypothesized poorer performance in a cognitive control task, but not in a control language task, in the ADHD subjects. Crucially, following tDCS, we expected the ADHD group to improve their cognitive control. In a double-blind randomized control trial, 42 particip

Necessity of an Integrative Animal Model for a Comprehensive Study of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Animal models of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been used to study and understand the behavioral, neural, and physiological mechanisms underlying ADHD. These models allow researchers to conduct controlled experiments and manipulate specific brain regions or neurotransmitter systems to investigate the underlying causes of ADHD and test potential drug targets or treatments. However, it is essential to note that while these models can provide valuable insights, they do not ideally mimic the complex and heterogeneous nature of ADHD and should be interpreted cautiously. Late-manifestation of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in older adults: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: The age of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder onset is usually during the first 12 years of life; however, there have been recent reports of late-onset attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. These reports have been limited to that of young adults, and details in older adults remain unknown. As such, we had previously presented the first case report of "very" late-onset attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, wherein the symptoms presented in senile age. In this observational study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinical features of such attention-deficit/hyp

Living proximity to petrochemical industries and the risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children.

Evidence regarding the negative neurodevelopmental effects of compound exposure to petrochemicals remains limited. We aimed to evaluate the association between exposure to petrochemical facilities and generated emissions during early life and the risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) development in children. We conducted a population-based birth cohort study using the 2004 to 2014 Taiwanese Birth Certificate Database and verified diagnoses of ADHD using the National Health Insurance Database. The level of petrochemical exposure in each participant's residential township was e

Overdiagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Scoping Review.

IMPORTANCE: Reported increases in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnoses are accompanied by growing debate about the underlying factors. Although overdiagnosis is often suggested, no comprehensive evaluation of evidence for or against overdiagnosis has ever been undertaken and is urgently needed to enable evidence-based, patient-centered diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in contemporary health services. OBJECTIVE: To systematically identify, appraise, and synthesize the evidence on overdiagnosis of ADHD in children and adolescents using a published 5-question framework for de

Resolving heterogeneity in transcranial electrical stimulation efficacy for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

While the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is dominated by pharmacological agents, transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is gaining attention as an alternative method for treatment. Most current meta-analyses have suggested that tES can improve cognitive functions that are otherwise impaired in ADHD, such as inhibition and working memory, as well as alleviated clinical symptoms. Here we review some of the promising findings in the field of tES. At the same time, we highlight two factors, which hinder the effective application of tES in treating ADHD: 1) the hete

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), antisociality and delinquent behavior over the lifespan.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is closely linked to the development of conduct problems during socialization in early life and to an increased risk for antisocial activities and delinquency over the lifespan. The interaction between ADHD and common comorbid disorders like substance use disorders as well as changing environmental conditions could mediate the course of antisocial and delinquent behavior with increasing age. However, this complex interaction is only partially understood so far. This review presents current knowledge about the association of ADHD with antisocialit

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and lifetime cannabis use: genetic overlap and causality.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a severely impairing neurodevelopmental disorder with a prevalence of 5% in children and adolescents and of 2.5% in adults. Comorbid conditions in ADHD play a key role in symptom progression, disorder course and outcome. ADHD is associated with a significantly increased risk for substance use, abuse and dependence. ADHD and cannabis use are partly determined by genetic factors; the heritability of ADHD is estimated at 70-80% and of cannabis use initiation at 40-48%. In this study, we used summary statistics from the largest available meta-anal

Low hair cortisol concentration predicts the development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Low activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) resulting from genetic and early environmental factors has been thought to indicate risk for the development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and externalizing disorders. However, longitudinal research on this issue is scarce. We analyzed whether hair cortisol concentration (HCC), i.e. accumulated long-term HPAA activity, predicts the development of ADHD between preschool and school age. METHODS: A community-based sample of 126 children was assessed at the ages of 4, 5 and 8 years. ADHD and symptoms of
