Cardiac Dysautonomia in Huntington's Disease.

Huntington's disease is a fatal, hereditary, neurodegenerative disorder best known for its clinical triad of progressive motor impairment, cognitive deficits and psychiatric disturbances. Although a disease of the central nervous system, mortality surveys indicate that heart disease is a leading cause of death. The nature of such cardiac abnormalities remains unknown. Clinical findings indicate a high prevalence of autonomic nervous system dysfunction - dysautonomia - which may be a result of pathology of the central autonomic network. Dysautonomia can have profound effects on cardiac health, …

Coexistence of fibromyalgia syndrome and inflammatory rheumatic diseases, and autonomic cardiovascular system involvement in fibromyalgia syndrome.

The spectrum of symptoms represented by fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) has a profound effect on daily activities and impairs the quality of life. A considerable proportion of patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRDs) fulfill the FMS criteria, which can complicate the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-ups of IRD. In addition, the coexistence of FMS may cause unnecessary laboratory and radiological assessments. Several mechanisms have been proposed that may have a role in the etiopathogenesis of FMS, one of which is autonomic dysregulation. In studies evaluating cardiac autonomic dysfunct

Neurotransmitter changes in the brainstem and autonomic alterations during REM sleep - a mini review.

Changes of neurotransmitter levels and autonomic nervous system parameters during sleep, such as variations in blood pressure, heart and respiratory rate are well known. REM and NREM sleep stage differences are created by neurotransmitter changes mainly generated in the brainstem, but several distinct subcortical areas, such as the amygdala, hippocampus, basal ganglia or anterior insula are involved. The neurotransmitter changes differ in sleep stages and define not only the stage of sleep, but also the autonomic alterations. During NREM sleep, there is a parasympathetic dominance, while durin…

The Effect of a Biofeedback-Based Integrated Program on Improving Orthostatic Hypotension in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is prevalent among community-dwelling older adults and is associated with multiple negative health outcomes. Older adults are susceptible to developing OH because aging alters autonomic nervous system function. Biofeedback is a noninvasive, nonpharmacological intervention that can modulate autonomic nervous system dysfunction in older adults. OBJECTIVES: Our aim in this study was to examine the effect of a biofeedback-based integrated program on community-dwelling older adults with OH. METHODS: We conducted a controlled pilot study. Community-dwelling…

Autonomic neuronal modulations in cardiac arrhythmias: Current concepts and emerging therapies.

The pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia that result in cardiac arrhythmias is related to the sustained complicated mechanisms of the autonomic nervous system. Atrial fibrillation is when the heart beats irregularly, and ventricular arrhythmias are rapid and inconsistent heart rhythms, which involves many factors including the autonomic nervous system. It's a complex topic that requires careful exploration. Cultivation of speculative knowledge on atrial fibrillation; the irregular rhythm of the heart and ventricular arrhythmias; rapid oscillating waves resulting f…

Autonomic dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease: tools for assessment and review of the literature.

Autonomic dysfunction is very common in patients with dementia, and its presence might also help in differential diagnosis among dementia subtypes. Various central nervous system structures affected in Alzheimer's disease are also implicated in autonomic nervous system regulation, and it has been hypothesized that the deficit in central cholinergic function observed in Alzheimer's disease could likely lead to autonomic dysfunction. Several feasible tests can be used in clinical practice for the assessment of parasympathetic and sympathetic functions, especially in terms of cardiovascular auton…

HLA in autonomic failure.

We did not find a significant association between HLA antigens and pure autonomic failure or multiple system atrophy with autonomic failure. HLA-A32, specifically, did not occur with increased frequency in either group of patients. Our results do not support an HLA contribution in these disorders of the autonomic nervous system as reported by other investigators.
