Environmental and geographical factors influence malaria transmission in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa.

The malaria burden remains largely concentrated in sub- Saharan Africa. South Africa, a country within this region, has made significant progress toward malaria elimination. However, malaria continues to be endemic in three of its nine provinces: Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), which are located in the northern part of the country and share borders with Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. This study focuses on KZN, where district municipalities report monthly malaria cases ranging from zero to 8,981. Fitting Bayesian zero-inflated models in the INLA R package, we assessed the eff

China's post-zero-COVID Omicron wave: A Bayesian analysis.

Following the late 2022 transition from its "dynamic zero-COVID" policy, China experienced a major nationwide severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron wave. To characterize the wave's transmission dynamics, we used a Bayesian framework to fit a deterministic transmission model to two key data streams: reported COVID-19 daily case counts preceding the policy shift (up to November 11, 2022) and weekly virological and influenza-like illness (ILI) surveillance data afterward (through February 12, 2023). We estimated a nationwide cumulative infection attack rate reaching

Bayesian semiparametric partially linear cure models with partly interval-censored data.

Partly interval-censored data with a cure fraction are commonly encountered in epidemiological and biomedical studies, where exact failure times are observed for some subjects while others fall within certain intervals. For cure survival data, two-component mixture cure models that directly model the probability of being uncured and the conditional survival function of susceptible subjects, have attracted considerable attention. However, conventional cure models typically assume linear covariate effects in both components, which may limit their flexibility and applicability for potential nonli

Bayesian Model Revealing Segment-Scale Elemental Flux, Doubled CO2 Consumption, and Potential Anthropogenic Impact in the Upper Mekong Basin: Constraints from Strontium Isotopes.

Lancang River (LCR), the upper region of the large transboundary Mekong River, provides a critical understanding of terrestrial weathering status and CO2 consumption. Riverine Sr isotopes play a crucial role in identifying the link between continental weathering and the nearby ocean. This study reported spatial variations of Sr data from LCR during the flood season, and Sr isotopes were coupled with hydrochemical data based on a Bayesian model to assess solute sources. Results showed that carbonate weathering was the predominant contributor to riverine dissolved Sr (contribution ratio ∼35%). B

Atmosphere-based estimations of CO2 emissions at city and county scales and comparative analysis: a case study in Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomerations (YRDUA).

Accurate quantification of carbon emissions at the city and county scales will help achieve China's carbon mitigations. Large uncertainties remain in the estimates of CO2 emission at city and county scales in China. As a case study, we selected 71 counties in 11 cities in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA). A new observation site was established to measure CO2 mole fractions. The study used two atmospheric transport models to quantify regional emissions. Combining the observations, two models, and the Bayesian inversion, we quantified CO2 emissions in YRDUA in 2023 as 0.80 ± 0

Structural insights and molecular profiling of a large set of diverse compounds targeting PPARγ: from comprehensive cheminformatics approach to tool development.

This study integrates a robust cheminformatics approach (including chemical space exploration, Bayesian model-based fingerprint analysis, and cluster-driven molecular profiling) to reveal the key structural features influencing peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-gamma (PPARγ) modulatory activity. The Bayesian classification model effectively differentiates between the beneficial and adverse structural characteristics of PPARγ modulators. Structural motifs such as substituted benzylamine, phenoxyphenyl groups, 5-phenyl-1,3-thiazolidine scaffolds, and indole rings have been identified as

Assessing the connectedness between green finance, financial developments, traditional energy consumption, economic growth, population aging and environmental degradation in RECP economies: A deep learning-based analysis.

Climate change is a global pressing issue that cannot tackle without curbing CO2 emissions, which are a major contributor to climate change. Therefore, this study investigates the influencing effect of green finance especially in renewable energy, financial developments, traditional energy consumption, economic growth and population aging on environmental degradation for emerging economies of RECP from 2000Q1-2023Q4. We have used a deep learning-based multivariate regression model and robustness estimation tests such as structural learning-based Bayesian neural network and two-way period of ra

Phylogenomics of African Labeo (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) emphasizing central African species.

Labeo constitutes the largest genus within the cyprinid tribe Labeonini with over 110 recognized species in Africa and Asia. The clade comprises a major component of the herbivore/detritivore guild with considerable socio-economic importance to artisanal and commercial fisheries. A pan-African distribution and wide variety of habitat occupancy make the group a model to investigate diversification patterns, eco-phenotypic variation, and biogeographical events underpinning their radiation at a continental scale. However, previous attempts to elucidate Labeo systematics using either molecular or

Causal insights into gestational diabetes mellitus.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), defined by the onset of hyperglycaemia during pregnancy, remains the most prevalent metabolic complication in pregnancy. It is associated with increased risks of adverse maternal, neonatal, and long-term metabolic outcomes. This study aimed to identify potential causal relationships within clinical data on GDM that could support more targeted and effective interventions. METHODS: A clinically curated dataset of patients diagnosed with GDM at a major Irish maternity hospital was analysed, covering the study periods 2014-2016 and 2020. A knowle

Deep Learning-Driven Non-Contact Sound Source Localization via Multi-Axis Analysis with Laser Doppler Vibrometry.

This study presents a non-invasive sound source localization methodology that leverages multi-axis vibration analysis combined with deep learning classification. Accurate sound source localization is critical in various fields, including clinical diagnostics, where determining the origin of acoustic signals provides valuable physiological insights. Using Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV), sound-induced surface vibrations are measured, and directional information is extracted from the Log Power Spectra (LPS). The proposed framework integrates theoretical modeling of multi-axis vibrations, experime

Scoliosis Assessment Depending on Curve Magnitude Based on Torsobarography and Machine Learning.

The curve magnitude of the deformed spine is the leading factor for treatment planning in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Therapeutic intervention is typically recommended at a Cobb angle of 20°. While diagnosis traditionally relies on X-ray imaging, torsobarography offers a potential radiation-free alternative. This novel method analyzes the dorsal surface based on the pressure distribution in a supine position. From the pressure image, torsobarographic parameters are extracted to quantify the shape and symmetry of anatomically relevant structures. The objective of this s

Compound and cascading effects of climatic extremes on dengue outbreak risk in the Caribbean: an impact-based modelling framework with long-lag and short-lag interactions.

BACKGROUND: Small islands developing states in the Caribbean are exposed to increasingly frequent and intense extreme climatic events, which can exacerbate outbreaks of climate-sensitive infectious diseases. Few forecasting tools incorporate the compound and cascading effects of multiple delayed climatic indicators on disease outbreak risk. We aimed to create an impact-based modelling framework that employs interactions between climatic predictors to forecast the probability of a climate-sensitive infectious disease outbreak 3 months ahead, and to investigate the compound and cascading effects

Time-varying dynamic Bayesian network learning for an fMRI study of emotion processing.

This article presents a novel method for learning time-varying dynamic Bayesian networks. The proposed method breaks down the dynamic Bayesian network learning problem into a sequence of regression inference problems and tackles each problem using the Markov neighborhood regression technique. Notably, the method demonstrates scalability concerning data dimensionality, accommodates time-varying network structure, and naturally handles multi-subject data. The proposed method exhibits consistency and offers superior performance compared to existing methods in terms of estimation accuracy and comp

Association Between Betrayal Trauma and the PAI Traumatic Stress Scale.

The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) is among the most commonly used broadband inventories of psychological functioning. For the purposes of assessing trauma specifically, the most relevant aspect of the PAI is the Traumatic Stress subscale of the Anxiety-Related Disorders scale (ARD-T), which measures the degree to which a person feels wounded by something in their past. Research suggests that ARD-T is associated with exposure to a variety of different traumatic stressors. However, there is little research on the degree to which traumatic stressors that entail a component of interperson
