An aromatic substrate for hydroxylation by hydroxyl radicals (•OH) was investigated. The probe, N,N'-(5-nitro-1,3-phenylene)-bis-glutaramide, and its hydroxylated product do not bind either iron(III) or iron(II), and so they do not interfere with the Fenton reaction. A spectrophotometric assay based on the hydroxylation of the substrate was developed. A series of rationally designed platanic acid-based compounds derived from naturally occurring betulinic acid were synthesized through a sequence of Lemieux-Johnson oxidation and Aldol condensation reaction. Synovial fluids from rabbits with antigen-induced arthritis were investigated for the presence of slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A) using biological assay in guinea-pig ileum. The various methods of preserving bone for implantation are reviewed. Biological assay systems to determine the physiological and osteogenic potential of the implant are discussed. Sterilization remains the major problem. The influence of high-energy irradiation of freeze-dried bone is still uncertain. Experimentally and clinically it was found that the immunological status of the freeze-dried allo-implant is biocompatible.

Leucine and methionine enkephalins were measured by biological assay in normal colon, adenocarcinoma of the colon, carcinoma of the caecum, and in normal and inflamed appendix. Methionine enkephalin levels in both the adenocarcinomas and inflamed appendices were significantly higher than in normal controls. No significant change occurred in leucine enkephalin levels. The caecal tumours were anaplastic and contained no demonstrable opioid activity.
